I usually don't want much for holidays so I generally get what I ask for. I think the best gifts are when you're not expecting them, at other times of the year for example. Can't think of the best present, maybe when my parents bought me my first truck, it was a suprise.

I remember the holidays based on good times with family and friends.

When my Dad was in the military and my parents were overseas, my mother's high school yearbooks were lost while in storage.  When I was a teenager, I wrote a letter to her school and they actually found an extra copy of her senior yearbook and sent it to me for $5.

I gave my mom the yearbook for Christmas.  She was definitely surprised!

My oldest brother, McKenzie, loves to grill -- he grills his dinner almost every night, so a few years ago, I him a brand that said 'MAC', so he could brand the steaks he grilled.

It's awesome. Now everytime I'm over there, he offers up a "Mac" steak. He even travels with it when he comes home for the holidays.

My dad and I took a trip to Boston on Sept. 20, 2001.  Well, he had this little money clip/nail file/pocket knife thingy that he had carried for about 25 years.  It was a gift to him and it had his company logo on it and everything and it was just part of...well...him.  It was just one of those things that he was used to having and was particularly attached to it.

Well, the security guy was going to let it go until some a*s hole standing behind us pipes up and says, "Hey that thing has a blade!"  Bye bye sentimental money clip.  Honestly, the thing couldn't have cut hot water.

As it turns out, my wife (girlfriend at the time) happened to know some people at the airport and made some calls.  She got in touch with a guy who worked in the security area who had access to the confiscations.  This guy dug through about 3 trash bags full of stuff until he found it.

I got to send it to him that Christmas.  I wish I could have seen the look on his face when he opened it.

For his birthday, my exhusband asked me to buy a mountain bike for myself so that we could go biking together (I had bought him a mtn bike a couple years earlier for Christmas). I both gave and received with that gift.

Don't know if it the best gift i received, but my wife and I just had our second daughter one month ago. Friends and family all bought the required new pyjama, baby toy, blankets, etc. Don't get me wrong, I appreciated the gifts, but I friend of my wife that I am not really fond of, gave us a one day pass for my wife and I in a nice spa! EXACTLY what the doctor ordered!!! I am starting to like her more and more!

I put together a photo calendar for my dad a few years back comprised of all family photos. Given that he has probably tens of thousands of pictures it was hard to choose but the end effect was absolutely priceless. It must've been five years ago and he STILL talks about that being one of the greatest gifts he's received. Just a little time and a little thought is all it takes to make someone's decade.

Not to hijack, but we didn't fly out of BR until 6, got in at 1 in the morning here, so no buffet last night. Fixing to head up the strip, though.

I knitted Pat a scarf last year, and he loves it. I worked really hard on it and I was really proud of it.

as for me...I think my cycling jersey last year for christmas was awesome. But for my birthday last year, pat baked a cake (2 layers!) and drove all the way from Pittsburgh to Columbus to surprise me right before a class. I ended up giving my assignment and argument to another student and leaving class, brushing past the professor as he came in (he was cool with it) and we went to this great little italian place in town and walked around and had a grand old time. It was awesome.

In one of the first years I was with my wife, she visited an exposition of local arts & crafts. She told me of a guy who does metal work sculptures and described them so vividly that I had to go and find the guy and buy her one of the things she described. She was so surprised that she started to cry, getting me and her whole family going.

The best present I ever gave was a joint present with my siblings to my parents. We hired a photographer to photograph Christmas since we were all together for the first time in a few years. (We are allscattered.) We had Christmas 3 days after the actual holiday so the photographer could make it. It was a blast. If you go to www.strongphotography.com you can see the results by clicking on families, then clicking on santa. The first picture is me with my kids. My older brother played the role of Santa.

The best present to ever receive? Hmmm that's a toughie. My husband is master at picking up on things I say throughout the year and surprising me. But one time when we were dating he left roses on my doorstep for me to find in the morning and had washed my car for me. It was just so sweet. He is really thoughtful that way.

I gave my mom some new golf clubs for mothers day a few years ago.  We went right to the golf course and it was the first time she could really get the ball up in the air.  I don't think I ever saw her that happy my wholle life!!  She was like a little kid

The best present I ever gave was a 1999 Honda Civic to my mom in 2000!  The joy on her face was just too much.  BTW, I am not rich or anything, I had just received a rather sizeable backcheque at that time and my mom's old Honda was falling apart..

The best present I ever got was my cat, Darwin, from my wife in August 2000 ... sort of an early birthday present.

After my dad retired from a corporate career, I found out that his real dream had been to be a pilot. So in 2004, for Father's Day, I gave him a lesson at the local airport. They had a special for $49 that included a 1/2 hour book lesson and 1/2 hour flight lesson. I went up in the air with him on the flight part. To make a long story short, at age 74, he is now getting ready to solo pilot and is so happy pursuing his dream. That gift got him started on following through on his dream....

The best gifts I've received have been things like macaroni necklaces and mis-shaped pottery that were made with love and given to me with such pride by my boys as they grew up.
