Subject: Do you remember?

With the summer Olympics around the corner, do you remember where you were on 9/5/72?  That's the day we learned of the massacre/takeover of the Israel/Jewish Olympians in Munich.

I was standing at our middle school bus stop when a neighbor kid came out to the stop and said, "they killed some athletes at the Olympics"!!

I was 12....it was yesterday in my mind.  I can even remember what I was wearing.....weird.

That incident consumed much of our lives/discussion at home and school for the next few days.

Where were you?

ETA - not meant to be a political discussion or a commentary about anything in the world today....just wondering who else remembered where they were.  I can say, for myself, there has never been a summer Olympics since when I have not thought back to that day.

Where were you?

I was born about 2 years later

The movie "Munich" has been on my list to watch for a while now.  Any one see it?  Any good?

It's quite good. A little long. Great chance to see why Daniel Craig was selected to be the next Bond.

I was starting my sophomore year at Purdue.

I distinctly remember walking into the dorm TV lounge: It was standing room only and there was total silence as everyone stared at the pictures of the masked terrorist on the balcony.

I'll always remember Jim McKay reporting that "they're all gone".

I was a junior at Georgia Tech.  I did not have a TV or much access to one.  I do not remember where I was when I heard about the event, probably from friends in the dining room and I read about it in the paper.

Well, I was a little over 6 years from hatching.  As I recall the story, I was in a storage container in Upstate NY.

I was 13 at the time.  I remember watching it with my parents and listening too Jim McKay's somber description of the day.

Here is an article in today's Denver Post talking about Frank shorter's visit back to Munich.

We had 2 TV channels and no radio to speak of. I remember hearing about Alabama and Duke and something about the Olympics but that was all.

Then Alabama kicked Duke's butt.

I was young enough that that's pretty much all I remember. The hills is not the best place to keep up with world events, though.

I was born 4 years later.

But I think McKay's statement during the coverage really shows the emotion of those days.  They were so hopeful and not expecting it to end the way it did and you can see on his face that he hated being the one to say what happened.

It's sad how the Germans, French, even the US at the time just let things happen effectively making a deal with terrorists "don't mess with us and you can do what you want."

Other sad thing is how the olympics, which started as a way for all nations to put down weapons and compete, has become such a target.  I really hope those G4S turkeys don't let something happen at this one.  They're already set-up to be the fall guy if it does.

Movie was good.  Especially where they show Ehud Barak dressed like a woman during the raid into Beirut.

I was living in Germany then--just getting ready to enter 1st grade.  I do remember the media coverage, as it was one of the few english-speaking television shows that we could get.  I remember how upset all of the adults around me were, without really understanding it myself.

I wasn't born until a year later.  I've seen a few documentary's and such about it, but I couldn't tell you a whole lot about it from memory.

I wasn't born yet...but something about this is leaving me perplexed.  Why is the International Olympic Committee so against a moment of silence to remember this senseless slaughter?  Someone please school me on this ridiculousness.

I read a few days ago that Bob Costas is going speak of the tragedy and insert a moment of silence anyway.  What in the heck is the IOC thinking?

I'm with you.  I can only guess that it's some form of Political Correctness in order to not offend some countries, but it's only a guess.

I was only 5 so I don't remember it but I do remember hearing stories about it years later when my cousin was training to qualify for the 1980 Olympics.

It was big talk around our house because of possible safety concerns before the boycott was announced, the adults kept referencing Munich.  I was intrigued since it seemed so very real to them even 8 years later.

Thinking back after reading the responses....I can also remember when Tommie Smith and John Carlos did the "black power" salute on the podium.  Mostly what I remember was the outrage in our home (by my folks) that the Olympics were used to make a political statement. My dad went nuts.  Laughing

Again - not meant to start a political discussion of the "right or wrong" with regard to what they did....just thinking back.

The Olympics are cool.....I'll do something I almost never do for the next few weeks.....sit and watch TV.

My kids are stoked about them as well....very cool for me.

I was 8, almost 9, years old at the time, so I didn't really understand much of what was going on. My parents really didn't explain it to me, either.

I was also twelve< I got home and my father who worked for one of the televesion stations had jsut called my Mother to tell her to turn on the news.

My most vivid memory was hearing that Mark Spitz family was being put under protection because he was Jewish.

I can also remember the picture of the Assault on the building for the rescue.
