Now that the IM is out of the way, I'm looking for the next big goal. Any ideas? Serious or funny, whatever you like, but if you post something not serious that isn't funny, you will be mocked. First 3 are mine.

I voted long distance running event because I think you should nail down a 50 miler before you do the double iron.

does that qualify as funny?

Not to be one to put crazy ideas into peoples heads:

http://www.vendeeglobe.org/uk

Check out the Vendee Globe. It is a single-handed non-stop sailboat race around the world. The next race kicks off in 2008. (565 Days from today)

You sail around the 3 Stormy Capes (Horn, Good Hope and Leeuwin) to finish where you started, les Sables d'Olonne in France.

This race decends indirectly from the original Around the World Sailboat Race.

BTW: The Open 60 is a very nice boat to sail single handed

If doing it alone is not quite your style, there is always the Volvo Ocean Race in 2008:

http://www.volvooceanrace.org/

They do the same route but include stopovers and a crew for the boat.

Here is a link to an Open 60 for sale:

http://www.yachtcouncil.com/yacht-info.asp?vessel=17795&Currency=7&...

It comes standard with Canted Keel and twin Ballast Tanks for Single Handed Sailing but also has accomodations for a 12 person crew if you decide to do the Volvo Race. (They also use the Open 60 I think)

The idea is that when you sail alone, you need to be able to press on sail and the ballast tanks are used in place of crew members to distribute weight and prevent capsizing. The Canted Keel also aids in handling when the boat is heeled over. (On A Close Reach)

They also come in very handy when rounding the cape and get caught in a snorter and have to heave to for a couple of days.

It is an older boat, but then most of the non-corporate competitors are racing older Syndicate Boats anyway

Best of all, the boat is already in the marina where the race starts. Just fly in and your off and running.

Well, there's always the Arch to Arc Triathlon (Marble Arch in London to Arc de Triomphe in Paris - yes, the swim is the English channel).

My wife just asked me the other day what I'm going to do after IM, and I gave her a list of about a dozen things I was thinking of. She's still on the couch, with her mouth wide open, as I think she expected me to say I was going to stop with this foolishness... She should have known me better.

I don't know if any might speak to you, so I'll throw some out there that aren't just related to me:

-AT or John Muir trail (or other thru-hiking or even fast-hiking events)
-Cross country ride (I like the fast southern eastbound route - a few weeks and you're in Savannah)
-Badwater qualifier tree (start with Trixie and FitPhd and a 50 miler, work your way up).
-Adventure racing (Jen's lucky that Probst has moved on from his eco-challenge days, but there's still some fun ones out there)
-Couch to IM book (memoir, not manual)
-Get 26.2 couch-bound friends/acquaintances to finish a marathon (26 Mary's and 2 5k's)
-"Ironman Revisited" with CAF
-NOLS / BOSS or other wilderness learning experience
-Create a race

I've actually done a little poking around at all of these to get an idea of what it might take, if you're curious. In the meantime, keep revelling in your glory and make sure you're wearing that finisher's medal.

Again? I don't know about that - my plan was to wait until I'm in my 70's and father another 4 or 5.... I always thought that would be cool....

The world already has one, and she's an 8 year old girl. Scares me, really.

Go for a reality TV show.

Survivor or The Amazing race, or America's Next Top Model.
