I'm to the point that putting bags over my feet in my tri shoes no longer keeps my feet warm so I need some advice on the next step.

From what I've read when I searched the forums, it sounds like neoprene booties in conjunction with toe warmers (some say not to use these in vented shoes) is the way to go. My question then is, what brand(s) of neoprene booties work the best and why do you like them?

I see they range in price up to $100 and I definitely don't want to spend a lot so any advice on where to buy them as well is appreciated.

I have size 48's and haven't found any decent covers for my big flippers.  I'm interested in any ideas if other big footed monsters have found a source for good covers.

At the end of last season I picked up a pair of Lake MX 302's at a good discount.  I haven't mounted my road cleats as of yet, but figured I may switch over to my MTB pedals and really bought them for riding the MTB and commuting over the winter as I won't have my road bike out on the roads once it gets to nasty out or the salt starts getting spread.  I forgot where I picked mine up at but here's a link to Performance:

They have a road shoe too

I ride when it is 20 and above. I often do 3-4 hour rides in the winter when it is in the 30-40 range.

I had a pair of neoprene booties that were okay from Performance but I sent them back. Much better are Pearl Izumi Amfib covers..they wind block which is key to keeping your feet warm. I wear smart wool socks under. My guess is your tri shoes is an issue as they have lots of venting. I wear my road shoes that have less venting than my tri shoes.

These are what I have.

When it is the 45-60 range I'll wear toe covers.

This winter I will ride my Cross bike outside with MTB pedals/shoes which I bought in a 1/2 size larger so I can wear two pairs of socks and not have them be to tight.

Plastic bags make my feet sweat. Double socks in my normal shoes makes them tight and actually colder. I tried toe warmers but they were uncomfortable in my shoes.

In the meantime, try duck taping your shoes. I did this all winter and just wore my husbands thick wool socks and it worked (most of the time, depending on how cold it was). I've also used toe warmers (the little packs that you crack and they heat up).

I use some smart wool socks, low cut and a bit thinner than what I use for hicking. With toe covers that go over the first half of the shoe, not the thin shoe covers you see people wear on TTs.

I've just got a cheap pair of Nike booties (~£15/$30).  They work fine and keep out light rain too.

I use my mountain bike shoes. I cover all the venting with black duct tape and wear slightly thicker hiking socks. I'd go thicker on the socks, but there isn't enough room in the shoe.

The tri shoe vs. the road shoe is my issue. My road shoes are too small to wear socks with so they're out. Plus I have different pedals on my roadie vs. the TT bike. Therefore all those vent holes to help dry the feet after the swim are what's causing the cold now...

I'm going to try the Pearl Izumi Cyclone neoprene shoe covers and see how they work. I'm planning to ride until the gear I have just doesn't keep me warm. So far I've ridden in the 30's and the only things bothering me are the feet...

Pearl Izumi shoe covers, for sure.  We just got the wind covers for sub 45-50-ish degrees, and have the Amfibs for colder or wet conditions.  Good enough for Michigan cold-weather cycling...at least to 30 degrees (lower than that and I'm on the trainer).

Amfibs are around $50 retail.  We picked ours up on Ebay, so they were a little cheaper.  REI also has them on sale periodically.

BTW, Rottie, they make 'em in XXL for folks with shoe sizes bigger than 47.  Must be how you're such a fast swimmer!

What is this "cold weather" you all keep referring to?

I bought a pair of these a few years ago, and they are fantastic. I never get cold feet in the winter.

I haven't seem them sold anywhere in the US, but I purchased mine from a bike shop in the UK and had them shipped over here.

A little pricey, but well worth it.

Ok one thing is your bike shoes probably have a hole in the bottom. I took the removable liner out of the bike shoes and put in a liner from an old pair of running shoes and that helped alot (no wind blowing between the toes) in cunjunction with wool socks and neopreme booties. Last friday was 37 F with 25 mph winds and I did 70 miles, feet were fine. Get off every couple hours and walk on them to make sure they are getting enough blood.

I have toe covers from Performance that I have been using for 2 seasons now.  I also ride sockless and keeps my toes nice and warm down to about 50 degrees.

LOL very funny topic for me. I love cold weather and usually dress way lighter than most around here. Down here when it's 60ish or just below in the morning don't be suprised to see several people in arm/leg warmers and shoe covers. Even though it will be 70 in an hour or less.

i went for a run this morning and had to put on a long sleeve and gloves......it was 58. but it does get much colder, in the winter it can be in the 30's. and yes i know 30 isnt cold to you northerners, but once you move to florida your blood thins out and its over with. FWIW, i was born and raised in maine, so i do know what real cold feels like.

I got tired of pulling the booties over the shoes last winter. It always took forever to put the shoes on or take them off. I bought some real winter road shoes and have not regretted one penny I spent on them (they were pretty cheap though on eBay). I wear them well into the spring because I get cold toes easily. I just bought a pair of winter MTB shoes too so now I can commute at least until the snow starts.

And, yes, we have real winters here in AZ: Flagstaff is at 7000 ft.
