Member 414![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Don't you sometimes feel like going longer?Lately, (I have been out of work), the 1/2 hour bike ride or run during the week seems so short. These are the workouts that I mapped out for myself, but I find myself wanting to go longer more like I do on the weekend around an hour. Anybody else start feeling good (or bad) and start wanting to push themselves harder? |

Expert 773![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Don't you sometimes feel like going longer?I always want to ride or run longer, but I have serious time management issues (a 12-14 hour work day is not uncommom). However, I try the best I can to stick to my planned workout. I do occasionally go longer (not too much) on the weekend if I feel good. In my novice opinion, I guess it would depend on what type of base training you had. If you have a solid base, maybe you could re-evaluate your current training program and up the hours. If you are still in your base, I would stick to the lesser hours. I am always cautious of over-training or burnout. |

It seems to be pushing me about the right amount and forcing me to back off when I need to. If you're never getting the feeling that you're pushing yourself maybe you need to take your whole plan up a notch. |

That way, he is fired up for the next practice session and won't hate practicing (as much Edited by lifesgreat 2005-05-11 3:27 PM |

It's tough getting 'normal' people to want to go for long rides and whatnot with you on a regular basis. You tend to get labeled as nuts. In fact, I called one of my friends last night and the first thing out of her mouth was "Oh hey, so-and-so and I were just talking about how crazy you are." Hmmm, great. |

These are my buddies, so they think I'm nuts in a good way. They are all very active, athletic girls and entirely capable of triathlons, they just think I train a crazy amount and am a little overboard on the dedication bit (though for this place, I'm commonplace... even a bit wimpy). |

Expert 1274![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jackson, Mississippi | Subject: RE: Don't you sometimes feel like going longer?I was under the impression (and it says this at the bottom of ron's plans.. the sprint at least) that the shorter sessions are for strenth and speed training. It specifically says... Ron's 16 Week Sprint - Run Focused Plan Swim * Speed workouts - Do these workouts on the 'short swims.' These workouts should include shorter swims with recovery in between but focusing on swimming fast (ex. 5 x 100s, then 10 x 50s) Other Notes * If doing any speed work or training at a higher heart-rate zones, do them on the short sessions. Always keep your long sessions easy-going. Now.. personally I don't feel like my base is strong enough to start these strengh sessions.. except maybe pushing the last 5 minutes of my runs to simulate finishing.. any thoughts on this?? Will |

My IM brother-in-law cautioned me about this when I was a bit less methodical and alot more gung ho. Stick to your plan, build 10% each week and roll back 40% one week a month for recovery. I've found it works like a charm. I resist the urges to go faster (messin' with my HR and sending me into the anaerobic zone...) and longer... (building more than 10% weekly) and I've been injury free for 2 years... KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK on wood. I'm building slowly for my Half in September... and racing Sprints and Olys in between... so I've got a long season ahead of me... I don't want to be burned out or injured come August! BUT, I do have to admit, I'd love to have you guys to work out with! I'm lonely alot of the time... People around here are either very recreational exercisers or crazy Lance Armstrong peloton bikers... there's no middle ground. I ride alone... (Is that a song???)

In fact, I called one of my friends last night and the first thing out of her mouth was "Oh hey, so-and-so and I were just talking about how crazy you are." Hmmm, great. Amen to that. I thought I was doing okay and had settled into a good cycling group for me until this spring when I dropped everyone 3 times on the first ride without meaning to and the local guru started referring to me as a hammerhead. It must be all the trainer workouts this winter. I'm hoping the guys get in shape enough to ride with me this summer! This is not a problem you can complain about to most people! I also live in an area where an avid interest in endurance sports (especially for a woman) is considered a mild form of mental illness. |
