Subject: question for Cat people
Hi all,
I'm thinking of getting a cat. But the only thing I'm not sure I could stand is the cat hair everywhere. Is there a cat that doesn't shead it's hair? And hairless cats are out of the question, they give me the creeps

Get one of these...

And get ready for some cuddle time.

I agree on the slicker brush - it does make a difference.  I've got two cats, one absolutely loves it, all I have to do is show it to him and he comes over for brushing.  The other one tolerates it for a few minutes then starts attacking it.

Rexes shed less than other breeds, but you're going to have to shell out some $$ to get a purebred.  Personally, I'm a fan of rescuing from the local shelter.  And you'll get used to the hair. :

And you'll get used to the hair.

My wife has a cat and I hate it. If they get used to something (it takes one time for them to get used to something), it's all over. Let it out at 3am once, and it'll yowl all night if you DARE to make it stay in. The cat hair gets everywhere, they only come near you when they need something (like food), but otherwise you are useless to them. Our cat yowls through the night, and my friends cat (before I met my wife) used to attack my hand when I scratched my a-hems in the middle of the night. Cat claws down near those parts is frightening...

That said, they seem to have a sense when something is awry. When my grandfather passed away a couple of years ago, as soon as I walked through the door, all she wanted to do was cuddle, and there is little as soothing as petting an animal.

You'll never get used to the hair. It gets everywhere. For some folks that might be fine, but it can get annoying when you have to go to an important business meeting (or a wedding/funeral) covered in cat hair...

Well...being that my wife is a Vet I asked her if there were any cats that do not shed hair...and unless you want a completely hairless cat, you will want to get a Devon rex....see the image below...outside of them, most cats with hair ARE gonna shed...

Not like I'm a cat person or anything , but here's what I do.

I have those sticky lint removers for work clothes. I have a little handheld vacuum cleaner with a power beater to clean furniture. I do not allow the cats in our bedroom for more than a couple of minutes at a time. I keep the cats off the chairs in the dining room.

I would suggest that if you're thinking of getting a cat but you're concerned about cat hair, you might consider cat sitting for somebody to see how you feel about it. I love my cats and couldn't care less if the shed on me all the time. I can't imagine not having a cat in my life.

You need to know if you can love a cat before you get one. And when you get one, get some big tabby because they're the best. And have it fixed.

My cat Charlie (see my avatar) hardly sheads at all.  He is a rescue cat but I think he is part oreintal shorthair.  His furr is like silk.  He is very perosnable too.  My Aunt had and oriental short hair and he was just like Charlie.  Get the cat.  They make great companions

My cat, Darwin, has long yellow fur.  He sheds and gets hair all over the house and my face gets all itchy when I get close to him but that's okay.  I love the furry old feline!  I never used to love cats but since I got Darwin, I am now a cat lover.  A house is just not a home without a cat!

My cat is a long haired himalayan/siamese/calico. She is very fluffy, and when she sheds, she drops her hair in clumps. Otherwise she doesn't shed that much, even in the hot weather. It helps that I brush her a lot and I just pick up the clumps of hair off the furniture and floor. It's the hairballs I can't get used to. Nothing helps her hairballs, I swear! ick!

Doesn't that just make them just like a woman...in a permanent fur coat???

My Mr. Kitties rule, I wouldn't trade them for some slobbering mutt for anything (no offense to dog-lovers).

The best way to deal with shedding is to get a cat that matches most of your furniture/clothes.  For instance, black cats + off white couches = trouble.  However black cats + deep red couches = All good.

And calico cats shed on everything!

I barely notice the hair unless I'm out at some nice function and belatedly realize that Minouche must have taken a nap on the clothes I laid out before my shower.

Brushes are good though. Get yourself a brush and a lint-roller (i.e. overpriced roll of masking tape) and go find a cat you love.

Personally, I love cats. Especially with a touch of butter, some garlic, and a pinch of salt. Feline fricase!

Now, the question I'm having is......What beer or wine goes best with feline? I would think something darker, perhaps a nice porter.

I have 2 cats and a dog and I find the dog hair more annoying than the cat fur.  It seems like it's harder for me to get the fur from my long haired cat off than my short haired cat.  So I'd defintiely go with a short haired cat.  In winter time the fur isn't bad because they grow their winter coats and keep most of it.  It's just bad they start shedding in summer time.  I don't let my cats in my bedroom anymore and that has helped with eliminating all the fur on my clothes.  And if you get a cat you'll need to get a lint brush/sticky roller!  Good luck and make sure to post pictures if you decide to get a little furry feline!

Lara - 2006-04-17 5:22 PM damn it...  you're supposed to say   SEND ME A KITTEN!!!!!!!

I would say that if I already didn't have 2 cats and a dog.  I couldn't get another pet if my life depended on it.  My 2 cats were pissed at me when I got the dog- my one cat peed on me when I was sleeping just to let me know how mad she was.  They have finally adapted to the new dog and new home, I think.  I don't want to make them mad again.  It's no fun having to strip your bedding and washing in the middle of the night.  the things I do for my animals
