Subject: Anyone play golf

Does anyone else play golf ???    My wife gave me lessons for xmas, i took my 1st one a few weeks ago.  I hope to take my 2nd on this Friday.   I really enjoy it.. I can't believe it's going to be more expensive than triathlon.

I've been to the driving range a bunch of times, i started off with nasty slice, but i have slowed down my swing and now that slice isn't as nasty.  I actually may play my first round of golf this Saturday with my brother and father-in-law.

Are there any good golf fourms/message boards out there that will be some help?

I play quite often. I can assure you the joy will soon turn to frustration! Well at least it happened to me and many others. I now shoot in the 80's usually. When I first started and always shot in the 100's it frustrated me. BUT, there were always one or two amazing shots per round that kept me coming back for more. Love it.

When I play, I imitate a spinkler system just spraying balls all over the course.

I played for a little bit when I first moved to Florida but haven't gone out in a long time.

Yes, poorly.

Decent short game and putting, but I'm awful off the tee for some reason.

Only golf I'll play has windmills and clowns heads in the middle of the green.

The best thing you can do for your game is take lessons.

And enjoy yourself.

I used to be addicted to it. Belonged to a country club and played at least 3 times a week. Got my handicap down to a respectable 12, but could not get it any lower. Got to a point where family was more important on the weekends and it was just an expense I could no longer justify. I have not played a single round in three years and do not miss it at all.

So, now instead of getting frustrated because I slice the crap out of a drive, I get frustrated because I get winded after a 100 meter swim!

I play, and love it. It's very addicting, and yes... it can be very expensive as well. At the beginning, don't fall into the trap of having the best gear.... as tempting as it is. Just get out there and practice. You're starting off right by taking lessons. Most people don't do that.

Good luck!

Great advice, especially on the equipment and lessons. I have always said a $500 driver can lose plenty of $5 balls if you have a 50 cent swing.

As luck would have it golf "season" kicks off for me tomorrow. Play in a work league and try to get out otherwise when I can. I have splurged for toys through the years but agree with what was said, in golf $$ doesn't buy happiness. Good to year your taking lessons. Make sure with your lessons that they are giving you good feedback on your grip/hand positioning as this is usually one of the easiest things to correct on a newbie and will provide benefit right away. Whenever I start spraying the ball around it's almost always one of two things: 1. Slow down or 2. Too weak of a grip.

That's a nice gift and most appropriate for someone new to the game. I'd recommend regular lessons for this first season - IMO, they will go a long way to quell the inevitable frustration everyone develops with this game - it's maddening at times.

I picked up the game as a youngster, was mostly "off" during adolescence (when mi padre would have bought me all the equipment I wanted), and picked it up again after college (when I had to foot the bill for the equipment).  I'll admit I've spent a fair amount of money on equipment over the years, but you surely don't have to...I will say that a well-fitted set of clubs is a must (sound familiar???).

Now I play occasionally, mostly "corporate" golf. The scorces don't seem to change much, either up or down, but I think it's because I don't seem to care much about the outcome anymore. This "whatever" attitude has made the game more enjoyable, at least for me, and the scores are still pretty good.

I think you'll find there are alot of similarities between golf and tris, especially the "man against course" aspect. Enjoy.

I have golf clubs and swing them on a golf course maybe once a year.  It sometimes resembles golf.

Here's tip (think I read it on here) about controlling the slice off the driver.  Put some chapstick on the face of the club so the doesn't get a chance to spin as much when you mis-hit it.  It may be against the rules, yet I doubt you'll be playing for money or on the tour anytime soon.       note:  I haven't had a chance to try that yet.

Vaseline works also......or so I've heard.

I am not big on golf training gadgets at all, but I think this grip, Golf Pride David Leadbetter Training Grip, is actually a very useful training tool. By learning the proper grip, you can quickly learn and acquire proper muscle memory/club handling/swing.

My BIL assisted in designing the grip; was pretty cool to see the product come together.

dang, I am the only golf junkie here. In my past life (active duty AF) I played 5 days a week, usually 36 a day...I used to reg. shoot in the mid 70's. Now thanks to 4 young kids and this addiction called triathlon and the training that goes with it, I have played once in 8 months. I still have my golf orgy scheduled with my best friend for next month in Alabama. 3 days of golf on the RTJ Trail. 36 holes a day....aka golfers heaven. If I keep it in the low 80's it will be good. I still follow the pga tour fairly closely....still chip and putt at lunch at a course a couple minutes from the hospital once a week just to keep the clubs busy....with the kids and the responsibilities there isn't time for both golf and tri. I've had my fill of tons of golf, now it's time for tri dedication....gotta do better in the future than 11/12 AG as i did in my first race Saturday....

...also, wd-40 better than chapstick/vaseline....less mess and still reduces spin...so I hear

Only play golf on the Wii these days.  Last time I played in a company golf tournament I took out a glass pane on a deck of a house that backed onto the 18th fairway....  lucky for me the house was under construction and the builder did not come after me for payment.

I used to play a lot, Country Club, Tournaments and such.  2 MUST FOLLOW RULES:

IT IS A GAME...Have fun no matter what or go home.

What ever the course handicap is add 18 or 36 and make that your PAR for the course ie.

A par 4 is now a par 5 or 6,  a par 3 is now 4 or 5.

Following these two rules will guarantee a good time and I still play with clubs I got from Joey Bishop when I won a tourny in So. Cal. in 1978.

Well I enjoy being outside, drinking, smoking cigars, and driving little cars....so yes I do like Golf.  I don't think I have ever played a game straight though.  Whenever I play it is for work or a charity tourney (ie free booze), or with friends (like before a wedding ect).  I don't think I could play by myself.  Someone once said if I got serious about the game I would be pretty good; I replied that if I got serious about the game it wouldn't be a game anymore and therefore no fun.
