Found this on drudgereport today.   You can find out just how fat you are by gov't standards.  I'm downright obese, lol.  If you click on the pic of GW Bush and then click on the "twinkie tax" link you can get a great shot of the guy who's blaming fast food for making people fat (I'll agree with this to an extent, who can deny it?).  Doesn't seem to practice what he preaches.

I can't believe Tom Cruise is 5'7" and tips the scales at 200 lbs!!!!  Either he's a lot more ripped than I ever would have imagined or he's not being honest.  Then again, for $20 million a film I'd be in a little better shape myself.

i am approved at 5'11" and 165lbs.  however, i'd still be approved if i was 135lbs  and believe me, if i weighed only 135, a 5mph breeze would knock me over.

i am aok at 5'2 1/2"-- but barely. I am in far worse shape than any of those guys. speaking of which, is the index the same for men and women? and I wonder what female celebs' BMI's are, all of those were men. What's Serena Williams, for example?

I agree that fast food makes you fat but I don't see any at McDonalds force feeding Big Macs to anyone ; )

Wow, I went from severely obese to just overweight!

In my dentist's office she was selling a weightloss device where it limits the amount of food you could put in your mouth at one time...don't ask! Well, they had a BMI chart on the counter. You were to look up where you are on the chart then tell her and she would decide if you needed this device. I was in the middle of my Ironman training, probably in the best shape of my life. First she asked what I did on the weekend "Oh, a 100 mile ride on Saturday and a 16 mile run on Sunday" She said "Wow that's great! Where are you on the BMI chart?" "Oh, I'm severely Obese". She said "Well the chart is just a guideline, I think you're fine"

What a crock!

At 5 ft 9 in and 160 lbs I am "government approved."

The interesting this is that I don't become "too thin" until 125lbs!!!!!! If I got down to that weight I would be skeletal. I jump to "overweight" at 170lbs though. Not a weight I want right now, but hardly what I would call overweight.

I do question the validity of the numbers at this sight though. It is clear a PR group for the fast food industry.

five four and 158something. How's that? I"m overweight and in shape.

not complaining- it qualifies me for the "out of shape" health incentive rebates at work.  The skinny folks don't get anything.

Read in today's  paper that Atkins Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection.

5'9" - 194 overweight - but hey I'm down from 231 - obese!!!

I talked to the Health Nazi at my work about this. Because it didn't make sense to me that ripped body builders were "obese". His comment was that no matter what the extra weight is (muscle or fat) it forces your heart to work harder to pump blood through the extra tissue. Thus, the recommendation of BMI at or below 25.

In order for me to fall in at a healthy BMI I would have to be 165#'s @ 6'2. Not gonna happen, I have lifted weights for years before tri'ing and for me to be 215# would be ideal and then I believe they would still have me as overweight.

No joke, this place is a PR campaign, and I hate being "sold" to. I do actually believe that the BMI numbers are a bit wonky, but just because I believe that (a) the numbers are weird does NOT mean that I believe (b) there should be no government regulation of the food industry. This site seems to be conflating those two things.

Actually, now that I think about it, I might actually think that there should be less government in the food industry. But if I had my way, the first thing that the government would stop doing would be providing massive federal farming subsidies to big sugar and grain farmers, rather than staying out of regulating the fast food folks.

Then again, I'm probably a bit prejudiced, I've read Marion Nestle's book.

Edit: Runner's World has a bit more on the BMI.

I'm 5'7" and 167# (down from 240).

It says my BMI is 26.15 and that I'm overweight. Gee, like I needed the gov to tell me that... I have a mirror!

Just overweight. I'm surprised, actually. Most automated programs faint when I type in 5'1", 151.

I am in the same camp as you are in terms of weight. We don't have health incentive rebates at work. I think my premium is used to subsidized coworkers who have kids. Yes, Atkins filed. Companies that built on fad scare me.

Maybe there should be a EMI - Ego Mass Index?

I'm government approved...not sure I'm comforable with that.

I am 6 feet tall, weigh 205 lbs and have a BMI of 28.  According to the charts, am borderline obese!?!  I should weigh 177lbs, which would lower my BMI to 24.  I would look like a stick at that weight!?!

Is it just me, or is the whole BMI thing more likely to be inaccurate for males?  Seems like a lot of fit-looking men fall into the overweight or obese category, but this isn't the case as much with women.

I don't actually think it's that far off for women (ignoring super-buff athletes like Serena Williams, etc.) since we don't build muscle mass as easily.  I'm govt approved at 5'6", 130 lbs.  Below 120, it says I'm too thin, over 150 I'm overweight - I think that's pretty accurate for someone my height.  I know it's possible to be my height and weigh over 150 with a lot of muscle, but for *most* women I think building up that much muscle mass would be difficult.

I think you're right about this.  For me bodyfat % is still so much more accurate than the BMI.  At nearly 6'1 and 190 pounds I'm nearly obese by BMI, yet I'm like 10% bodyfat and in good shape.  Go figure.
