I was just curious if folks who have or who regularly complete full IM competitions could toss some numbers down for total annual miles biked/run/swam. I am trying to get an idea of where I need to be for a 2010 IM. Thanks for your time. (I know it varies from person to person, with age, with years of fitness etc., just looking for some ballpark figures).

Here are my 2007 numbers where I trained for an Ironman starting after my last Marathon in January and then kicked into another marathon season in the fall. My Run Numbers are higher than normal due to marathon training. (I did 4 Marathons in 2007 not counting the Ironman)

2007 totals
Bike:262h 17m 09s  - 5106.28 Mi
Run:401h 06m 10s  - 3020.01 Mi
Swim:48h 00m 16s  - 179281.9 Yd

My volume numbers for this year (2008) will be just a bit higher with IMCdA Training and then Fall Marathon Season. (I am currently ramping up for my first Race of the Fall/Winter Season in October)

Thanks for the info, I should get to:

Bike 2500
Run 1000
Swim 105600

for this year (with being sick a lot in the spring 2-3 months), so upping things 20 percent for next year (and double the swim miles) should probly get me close for the following year to just complete one (not concerned about time so much as being able to finish it at this point). I will have more access to swimming next year than I had this year.

Does that sound about right or am I missing something important in that assumption?

I did an IM in July of this year. Here are my totals for this year to date (not too much training since IM):

2008 totals
Bike:197h 16m 30s  - 3365.72 Mi
Run:62h 16m 47s  - 379.88 Mi
Swim:88h 42m 29s  - 284474 Yd
Strength:3h 44m
Aqua Jogging:48h 54m 15s

I only did a HIM in 2007; here are my totals:

2007 totals
Bike:210h 50m 56s  - 3655.57 Mi
Run:114h 25m 14s  - 740.04 Mi
Swim:132h 45m 46s  - 421357 Yd

My run volumes are typically much lower than everyone's since I always seem to be injured.

Wow! some big #s. I don't think I have the time or even want to put in 14hrs avg per week. I will think about it if someone will take over some of my bills for for a bit though.

I did IMLP in July and have not been doing same amount last 6/7 weeks.

2008 totals
Bike:226h 35m 41s  - 3613.21 Mi
Run:99h 13m 32s  - 558.06 Mi
Swim:65h 46m 16s  - 153119.6 Yd
Strength:18h 57m

Another good way to check out norms is read RRs for folks then look at their totals. Time/mileage various quite a bit.

For my peak IM training I barely got to 15 hours.  I did that twice for LP this year (training was way down to begin with, I really only trained seriously for about 6 weeks for the race).  And for FL I think I had maybe added one more week close to 15 hours.  The majority of mine were in the 10 - 12 range. for those periods.

Again, I did not have stellar times, but finished respectably MOP.

I am sure that I am much slower than most of you, but the trend looks like around:

3k miles biked
1k miles run
200,000 yards swam is a decent base to give it a shot for first IM.

Those who are faster will of course top that and those with a better base than me and such. This was a very helpfull post for me thanks again to everyone who posted here. Who knows if I have a solid HIM next month and stay healthy with 10 - 15 hour weekly workouts maybe I can hit a late IM next year. We shall see. Although getting into one is also a trick I hear.

leading up to IM Lousiville for me was

Bike 3231 miles
run 935 miles
swim 96000m

I really didn't put too much emphasis on my swim, as I'm a strong (not that fast), swimmer.

Not much of a swimmer but I still got from Point A to Point B.

Third IM on tap this Nov (IMAZ), normally averaged 10-12 hours a week and finished my previous two IMs with a smile on my face in the 13 hours range.

Check this:

  • Search the Race Report database for IM distance races.
  • Click on the names of the people who wrote the reports.
  • Click on the Logs button to see their training totals on the left side of their blog, or dig a little deeper to see their volume graphs.

This assumes of course that they logged their training here. Some folks don't, they just use the race reports.

I had been searching individual's race reports and logs, but it was a bit hit or miss. This thread has really given me an idea of what vollume I need because so many folks were generous enough to toss there data out here. Then I can just do a trend analysis and find what basic vollume I would be comfortable with attempting my first IM.

I realize that speed, event specific focus and individual training stength based on years of training impact vollume in some ways, but the trend is (with an emphasis on what I personally would feel comfortable competing with) as I said above:

Bike 3k miles
Run 1k miles
Swim 200,000 yards

and ya have a decent shot at finishing an IM. (there are other assumptions about your training, health, nutritian, base, mental toughness, equipment, etc. etc. but this looks like the basic "when will "I" be ready for an IM" information I was seeking.) Thanks again to everyone. Hopefully it will be helpful to others to see where they fall in their training vollume in comparison to there peers and what it takes to get to the next level. Or for all of us gona do an IM one of these years, but not sure where to peg it folks.

I'm a slower biker around a 16mph avg and a 10:30/11min mile runner.

for IMKY this year I missed a few long runs and instead chose to do more 60-70 runs but I was still a few hours under what my plan called for
