Pre-race routine:

Pancakes at the hotel, drove the race venue to set up.
Event warmup:

None today
Swim
  • 31m 27s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Easily my best swim at this distance ever. After some early jostling, found some feet to draft after the first turn, and ended up in a group of 4 for the second half through the canal. Sometimes racing smart is just as important as racing hard.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Another good T1, no wetsuit issues and had a nice mount.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 2h 38m 59s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.13 mile/hr
Comments:

Really wanted to get above 180 for the bike, but will settle with 176 average, 180 normalized (VI = 1.02). I guess it's better to go too easy vs. too hard, but still a little frustrating I can't seem to hit my numbers in races. Otherwise a very good ride, stayed in aero throughout (not easy late) and stuck to the nutrition plan.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

2nd fastest (possibly fastest?) T2 in the race. I do not mess around here
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 34m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough, tough run. At the time I thought first place in the DoubleMussel was only a few minutes ahead, so I started off with the idea of catching him. Pace in the park was fast, but felt really comfortable so I let it go. First hill was rough, and the heat was turned to the max. Took fluids and sponges at every aid station to keep cool. The section on the dirt road through the winery was truly brutal. Second half of the race, no shade, and uphill. I was very very close to popping in that section. But made it through and was able to get my HR back down after a bit and got back to running well. Kept it going to the finish for an awesome run in these conditions.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, 2nd fastest run in the race, losing only to future pro Marco
Post race
Warm down:

Made my way to the lake to sit/float and cool down. Eventually got a massage (my neck was a MESS) and some food. Found out I won the DoubleMussel, despite never seeing 1st place out there. Turns out he did the AquaBike today, what luck!! Never imagined I would take the top spot for the combined race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat I suppose, but feel I did a good job in it.

Event comments:

First time doing this race (only had done the sprint), and first double ever. Absolutely loved it, they do such a good job here, and the venue is really awesome. Will definitely be back.
