Swim
Comments: positioned myself near "1:30" kayak away from shore and behind the mass of faster swimmers. started to tire around end of first lap but caught second wind and made up some time past first corner of second lap. got kicked in hand and jammed finger which swelled later in the day What would you do differently?: not much Transition 1
Comments: peelers helped with wetsuit but rash guard caught in zipper. peelers were awesome! but then the transition was up the helix ramp of the Monoona Terrace Center which I was not going to run. What would you do differently?: not much Bike
Comments: concerned because after 70 miles and 8 bottles of water, no urge to pee so I stopped just to see if maybe standing near port-a-potty would inspire me. it didn't. I didn't pee the whole bike course but kept my fluid and shot intake up. took water hand-ups every opportunity and mixed with the undiluted gatorade on my bike. kept heartrate in aerobic zone except for the hills. crowds were awesome. nice course but hot day and started to feel nauseous and my left toes were numb What would you do differently?: not stop if I don't really have need to pee. learn to consume more gel. Transition 2
Comments: bike up helix was sort of cool. didn't feel right tho' so I just sat and contemplated the run for a while and gradually moved into getting ready. What would you do differently?: under the circumstances, I did what I could. Run
Comments: I started out feeling unwell so I walked to first aid station and took cola and ice. from then on, I never felt like running much. I started having to pee all the time. stopping at every single port-a-potty station. ran on occasion but mostly walked. soles of feet hurt, jammed finger hurt and got down at mile 14 when the darkness, loneliness and many miles loomed ahead. What would you do differently?: make myself run more. Post race
Warm down: couldn't eat (until middle of the night but felt queasy the next day on and off) What limited your ability to perform faster: the heat and lack of long run experience Event comments: Ironman North America knows how to put these races on and the volunteers and spectators were awesome!! I gave it my best and was proudest of my mental focus and positive energy most of the day. what an experience! harder than childbirth. I swore I would never do it again although I never questioned during the race why I was doing it this time. Now, who knows? we are already registered for Canada next summer!! :-) Last updated: 2004-09-14 12:00 AM
