Subject: Do you ever just want to kick someone's....
OK, I'm not usually a competitive person (aside from with myself that is), but when it comes to this one person I just want to annihilate them when racing! Let me explain the scenario….

We have a group of friends who do triathlon together to stay fit and have some fun. Don't get me wrong, we all train hard when training for a race, but it still remains quite casual and fun. No one is competing with each other and no one cares if you have a bad day and get dropped or if you don't know the slightest thing about triathlon…that's the beauty of it…it's about getting together with friends, having a good time, and staying active.

But…there is one person in the group that is super competitive and is constantly comparing herself to others in the group – and telling you just how awesome she is and what an expert she is at each discipline!!!!! I know I can kick her @ss and I want to hand it to her!!! Is that wrong? It totally goes against everything I believe in and the reasons I do triathlons, but I just can't help it. I feel like someone needs to knock her down a notch.

I'll be honest…sometimes on rides I pick up the pace a little just because I know she is too proud to admit she is suffering . I guess it does make me a better racer in the end, but I can't help feeling guilty about being so mean.

Anyone else know someone like this?

There is ALWAYS that one person, in every group. If can't identify who that person is...then it is probably you.Laughing

I think that feeling the way you do is perfectly normal for most humans. any kind of motivation is good, if you use it to your advantage. Use your "disdain' for her, to push your pace, to punish her and to push yourself. An make sure to thank her for what she has brought to the group. She maybe thinking it's one thing, but you'll know it's something else. Wink

I would say no. I am highly competitive, and understand where you are coming from. You can do one of two things. A. Don't pay any attention to her. B. Drop her like a bad habbit in the next race.

Personally, I would eat my young to win. PERIOD. That is my M.O.

The pain & suffering on the faces of your group members trying to keep up is wonderful.

Um, yeah, it's called "racing".

I realize a lot of people do triathlons for the participatory aspect, for the feeling of accomplishment, camaraderie, etc.

However, triathlon IS a competitive sport. Seeing as it is derived from three separate competitive disciplines, it does involve the concept of trying to best your opponents.

A friend of mine coined this phrase for the athletes he coaches:

Don't do triathlons - race them.

Sure, there are people who do these just to be able to say "I swamX/bikedX/ranX".
But if you find yourself wanting to put the smackdown on another competitor -be it friend, foe, training partner, whatever -that is fine.

It's a race. Races are about trying to beat other people. Sometimes that other person is yourself, sometimes it's the clock, and sometimes it's your best friend.

But that is racing.
If you want to throw down in training to shut this girl up, then go for it. This will enable you to push harder in training, thus allowing you to make greater fitness gains. It will make you a better rider (or runner or swimmer) in the end.

It's human nature to be competitive. Sure, back in the day we competed over things like scarce food supplies, hunting grounds, and fertile mates, but still...

She's probably not aware of your competition playing out in your mind with her. You can use it to spur you on or you can suggest a little wager in a friendly or fierce competition between all your training buddies and then you can really test your mettle against this one particular chick and really find out who's the stronger competitor.

there is a difference between being competitive and thinking you are better then everyone else.

I know a guy like this.  He thinks he is God's gift to the sport and knows everything about it because he ran a 6+ hour HIM, has a coach and is going to sign up for IMKY this fall.

If her were just enthusiastic about the sport, and recognized that he doesn't know everything (and listened to the advice others give him) it would be one thing.  But instead he insists he knows it all, and gives (often wrong) advice to other beginners and complains that he's slow because of overtraining (off of < 10 hour weeks).

So on the group rides he does, a large group of other rides make sure he is with us...them right before the known sprint spots, just so we they can obliterate him.  In the long run, it's probably making him a better rider, but it's still fun.

No, it's not wrong.  Trash-talkers need to be able to back it up, if they can't, they deserve to be chopped down to size.  Go ahead and kick her @ss, don't feel guilty and stick it to her.  She needs to learn to not be so arrogant.

Well, I just had a virtual battle occur a couple of weeks ago with a guy that thinks he's god's gift to the world.  Battle over fat people in another sport yada yada they can't do anything he's so much better yada yada.  I'm battling it out with him on the thread when over on another thread I see where he's bragging about being able to do 1.5 hours of cardio.  Oh yeah, I jumped on that.  I'm not saying that's bad, it's good and anyone doing cardio should be proud of themselves but I couldn't help but point out to him that while he might be proud of that this fat lady can maintain over 3 hours of cardio.  He continued the battle and goes and posts about how he spent his evening posting on the board instead of working out. I couldn't resist posting that while he was blabbering I was out doing a quick 25 miles on the bike.  I had so many people cheering me on in the thread and sending me private messages it was hilarious.  There's always someone who thinks they'r the best yet can be out done by many.

When I first read your post I went "oh crap, is she talking about me?"  Haha.  I know that sometimes I can get a little overzealous in the sport and am excited to share something new I learned with others.  That can probably be misinterpreted by some people.  However, I don't compare myself to my training partners or act like an expert.   I just think that some people who started at the beginner level with me are sometimes resentful of my progress.  What they don't realize is that while they are sleeping in, I'm pounding out 2-3 hours of training before they have their first sip of coffee...

Anyway, yeah, use her as motivation and kick her heiny in the next race if you can.  But maybe give her a little benefit of the doubt too.  She could either be super insecure and that's her way of dealing with it...or maybe she's just really excited about triathlon and it comes off the wrong way.

Some people are definately competative and I see no problems with that.  Like someone else said Triathlon is about racing so why not have fun with it.  Now that being said some people can just be jerks about it plain and simple.  Just beat them good once and see what they look like (if you need an example watch the Frenchie in the Pool last night look like he wanted to cry!!).

Its not like anyone would expect you to take it easy on her in a race. If you enter a race, do your best, if she's in the race too, everyone will know who is faster.

I should probably find someone like the that to motivate me to train harder. I just try to beat my time from one year to the next, not really as much of a motivater.

I agree that triathlon is about racing, but there is no need to go on about how awesome you are...when you're not that awesome to begin with! I know plenty of folks who are hard core racers, but they don't make everyone feel inferior because they are slower or less experienced. In fact most of the great racers I know are rather down to earth and are always the first to acknowledge great efforts.

I guess my beef is that the rest of us can look at getting dropped and just admit that we were having a bad day and not make excuses. Or if someone comes out flying and is having an awesome day we have no problem acknowledging it and passing along a few words of praise.

Anyway, I'll try to be patient with her and give her the benefit of the doubt (maybe she is insecure), but I'm still going to crush her in our next race…and then maybe even suggest a ride or run a few days later so I can do it all over again!!!

P.S. This weekends most annoying comment from her was "Can we pick up the pace a little bit…I need to get a workout in". Who says that in a group ride…if you want a workout, just ride on ahead of us!!!

Reading posts like this, while I understand (I think), just makes me glad I was born a man. I don't have such qualms about being mean to overly aggressive people. If I can drop them, I drop them - and share a beer with them afterwards - or not!

Heh, we have one of those in our group, and another who is the polar opposite.  Always the slow one, always the late one, always the first to blow up, crap out, fall down, get tired, show up unprepared etc, and is ALWAYS apologizing for it.  Quit apologizing then, and FIX IT.

I'd like to take the two of 'em and knock their heads together, Stooges-style.

I love people who are good at what they do, and who can offer me good sound advice. Bragging and belittling, or not being able to back up the talk... very different!!! Its ok to want to kick anyones butt in a race since its a race, but just more motivation with this one!!!

It seems unfair to race someone if they don't know you're competing strictly to beat them. You should make it interesting and issue a formal challenge.

At any rate, it seems like training with her bugs you. So avoid her if possible, find ways to change the conversation, or tell her directly that her personal superiority complex bugs the s.h.i.t. out of you.

Also, it doesn't make sense to set a goal as, "be faster than person x". It's not specific enough. You need to have definitive goals to see that you are improving. Let your victory over her come through your specific goals, don't make beating her your primary goal.
