Royal(PITA) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello my fellow Putrid Puddings, So glad you've chosen to swim through the sillys this month! I'm Judi one of your co-leader elves. I have a few goals for myself this month. First is to average 3500 yards/class so that would give me 26,000 yards over the month. Second is to get the stroke count to 19 or less (currently averaging 20-21). Third is to kick more, and the last one is set to remind me why the coach is coach--stop fighting with him and let him do his job no matter how unpleasant it is to be corrected for the billionth time. Please take some time and introduce yourselves to the rest of us. This team has a few team members by request here (TriAya, wurkit_gurl and I have done most challenges together since last summers TdF challenge and dexter is a buddy on the boards for me too) Hope to see some swimming going on soon--and wish TriAya well on her marathon as well as dexters 5K this weekend! |

![]() Hey folks, I pledged 24,000 yards this month! Shouldn't be too bad for me to manage, assuming I prioritize. And I am only up at midnight on a Friday because I have a date tomorrow night with a certain tri-hottie that Zipp and Yanti have heard tell of before ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, team! I'm Erin. I'm a horrible swimmer (to be expected, I suppose, since I just picked it up in April) but I'm determined to improve. I'm aiming for 20,000 yards this month -- which will be a record for me -- and I'm kicking it off right with my very first lesson tomorrow. I'm a little nervous about it but mostly really excited. Looking forward to swimming with you all! |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Why, hello there Pudd'nheads! Welcome, welcome! This is a mighty fine team. Make sure, as we've done, to introduce yourself--tell us your name, goals, swim background, and anything at all else you'd like us to know! We've got all types, so if swimming ain't your forte .... ask away, and if it is, lend us your wisdom. I'm Yanti, and I'm a triaholic. I did swim for the Indonesian national team (see? even my old friends here learn something new every time we challenge together!)--not remarkable, and I was not the best swimmer there--but I simultaneously swam varsity or age group, so for many years I was a 10K/day swimmer. Okay, my swim goal for this month ... no, not yet ... wait for it ... drum roll ...
... 6000 yards. Not kidding. It's been a good tri season for me, but VERY high-volume training, and I've been given strict instructions by my coach and other mentors to take two weeks off after the marathon and do NOTHING except sit on the couch, eat tater chips, and watch bad TV. So mostly I'm here for moral support.

![]() Right, swim background, forgot about that! Not having been an athlete growing up (I was a dancer), I'm shockingly good at swimming and it's the best leg of my race, and the one I don't stress about. I enjoy it in general, and don't usually want to shoot myself when I have to wake up in the morning to go to the pool. (The only thing that sucks is cold water) My sis and I used to swim all the time as kids, and we took lessons every summer. Apparently I was REALLY fast when I was younger. Our instructors encouraged both of us to start swimming competitively. My sis did so, from about age 10 to sophomore year of college, but I wanted to keep dancing. But, my technique has stuck, which helps me immensely, since I'm not your typical "swimmer" - I'm 5'3" and petite. I do pretty well for my AG, though I've only done two sprints. |

Royal(PITA) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning Puddins, Glad to see Yanti peeled herself from the land of Twisnibbon to come say hi to all. Welcome, Erin and Chrissie. Erin, I just want to set your mind at ease, I've only been swimming for about a year. My father taught me when I was a kid but that was just enough to keep me afloat. Been working with a coach since Oct '06 and though my stroke is greatly improved I am still a struggler. I'm fine in the pool but get freaked out in open water. I suspect a lot of yardage will be drills this month but all pool time that you're actually in the lae doing something on your stroke counts (not the hot tub or flirting with the pool piglets). Lessons are definitely the way to start, relax and enjoy them! |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello fellow Putrid Puddings (I love our name, it has a nice ring to it) ![]() I'm Betsy and I'm relatively new to triathlons and BT - I just finished my first challenge last month and being accountable as part of the November challenge was a huge motivator for me! I don't have much time to read and post on the forums due to a new job and, of course, all my training but I'll try to pop in here more often this month. I've pledged to swim 20k. Last month I swam just over 16k and my pool was closed for a week so I think it will be a reasonable goal, even with the holiday season approaching. I love swimming. I've just recently rediscovered this. I was on a swim team when I was much younger (9-11 years old) but since then, I hadn't been in a pool more than 3 or 4 times until this summer. A few months ago, my roommate and I started swimming every night and somehow, that led me to triathlons! My early Christmas present (partially to myself) will be a tri wetsuit. So, this month, hopefully I'll be able to get in a few ocean swims. I live very close to La Jolla cove, which is a fantastic location for ocean swims, so I definitely need to start taking advantage of that! I actually did the La Jolla Rough Water swim more than a decade ago! I'm also hoping to start taking swim lessons or join a masters team...but we'll see! Just keep swimming...great quote Zipp! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all.. Well I was a competive swimmer for most of my live in fact when i was in school i think i slept in the water. I never took it much farther which is one of the reasons i started tri's anyways there is an alumi swim meet ever dec so I plan on kicking some high school at it so i need to ramp up the work outs.. I'm thinking anything over 3000 a work out will be good for me.. and should put me at my goal.. 5 k would be nice but that will be part of my long slow days |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Noz: Ha! I've been trying to think of photos that'll work for our team, and you nailed it. So, my lesson. I wrote it up in detail in my log if anyone's interested. But the sum is this: On the positive, the coach said my form looks pretty good, especially for someone who's self-taught (he seemed particularly impressed with my bilateral breathing, which was nice). On the negative, the coach seemed totally mystified as to why I'm so slow. I told him at the beginning of the lesson that my goals are two-fold: to learn proper technique and to get faster. He watched me swim and gave me a few tips, but was pretty light on the teaching. At the end of the lesson I finally told him exactly how slow I am (avg 2:45/100y, my fastest ever about 2:35/100y) and he was stunned. He asked right away if I had another lesson with him next week. Hopefully he'll take more of an interest in me then. If not, I'll have to decide whether to cancel the other two lessons I signed up for, or just ask for a different coach. I have to admit that I'm pretty frustrated after the lesson. I wasn't looking for miracles, but I guess I was hoping there'd be one or two (or three or four) obvious problems with my stroke that I could work on for the next few weeks or months. I'm pretty good at incorporating lessons/advice and I was looking forward to doing that this month. Instead, he told me my stroke looked fine. So what's the problem, then? I do have a question for the group: Is it possible I'm so slow just because I'm, well, lazy? Like maybe I'm just not pushing myself as hard as I can/should? My usual swim workout is usually one of three formats (not including drills): a long "endurance" swim of, say, 800y; a series of shorter swims, ie, 500y, 300y, 200y; or multiple sets of 100s, ie, 10x100. Should I be focusing more on the 100s and work on pushing myself as hard as I can? Sorry to go on so long! |

Erin, Have you done some work just sprinting? When I got ready for my first tri this yea my swim coach had me do 6 x50 race pace minimal break (first tri had a 300 m swim) My best practice set was around 7 min. My race day was 7:39 but it was pouring that dy and they made us stnd in the rain pre swim start so the pool water felt more like bath water |
