Would you enter a triathlon that advertised no shirt, no finishers medal and minimal couse support if the entry fee was only 35-60 dollars (depending on the distance)? Camp Pendleton sponsors a race series and the entry fees are fairly low (though you still get the t-shirt) but they aren't all triathlons.

Is anyone aware of any low budget race series out there? If you've raced them what did you think?

This is where you would lose me.  I could do without the shirts or might pay extra depending on what they looked like and I'd be ok with minimal refreshments as long as I knew ahead of time but I am NOT ok with minimal course support.  I live where it is hot and water stations every mile are important and it is vital for my safety to have great support on the bike route.  I didn't feel safe during my last bike ride and am not sure I'll do that race again.

If it was a sprint with minimal support, no support on the run sounds fine. If there are some busy intersections, I'd want traffic control there. A couple lifeguards would make me feel much better.

If there was enough support to keep the swim & bike courses safe, I'd be in at the $35 range - if I can still get splits and access to the other times to compare my results.

I think everything I've run this summer was $70+.  I love to race, but my wife's getting a little bugged by the fees.

Minimal course support would be fill your own water bottle on the bike (for a sprint or an olympic distance) and perhaps one water station to fill your bottle on the run. Once race I did this year required that you carry your own hydration on the bike and run but provided big gatorade coolers of water and electrolyte replacement for you to refill on the bike and run with 2-3 volunteers at the aid station. I liked this set up and it seemed to save a bit of money along with all the trash that is usually generated by little paper cups.

60 dollars is not really low budget.  I did a trail run series, it was $20/race, $36/2 races or $50/3 races.  You still got a shirt, there was minimal course support (usually 1 or 2 aid stations w/bottles of water) and post-race snacks (cookies & fruit).  Even our local sprint tri's with schwag & course support are only around $45-50 (~360 participants).

I enjoyed the trail run series, it was very small, only about 12-30 people did each race.  They offered 2 distances, the courses were fairly well marked (key turns) and bottles of water over little cups is always good!  They gave series awards, but I only did 2 of the 3 races so I didn't qualify.

We have those here, price is more like $30/race. One series that I have in mind has "minimal" support that includes kayaks and lifeguards on the swim, SAG wagon on the bike, and a single water station halfway through the run(2-3 miles). They also have sandwiches, cookies, and soft drinks after. T-shirts if you do all three events (one du and two tris) in the series.

I'd expect more in the upper (~$60) part of that price range.

I wouldn't mind a low-budget tri, especially for a sprint distance.  I don't really care about the t-shirt.  I don't usually eat a lot after the race anyway.  On the bike, it is nice to have people at busy intersections.  On the run, one water stop is plenty for a sprint (at least for me).  The option of a $35 race is really appealing to me.  If it's $60 with those amenities, I wouldn't bother.  If I register early for races, I can get that fee and have all of the things that are cut out.

I've never gotten a finisher's medal at a triathlon. Many races do not give them out, so that's not something I would expect.

I did a low budget triathlon... it was $45 (I think).  It benefited a local program to feed the hungry.  I felt good about the race and the cause.  There was support in the water, local FD/ambulance on site, volunteers on the bike course stopping traffic, water at the halfway on the 5K.  There wasn't a huge spread of food, no race maps, transition area didn't have bike racks and a few other things you see at larger more expensive tris... it was a lot of fun though and I will be doing it again if they have it.  They had t-shirts too, but I would have been fine w/out the shirt.  My hats is still off to the RD that put that race together.  Not being a USAT event also saved me $10 since I'm not a member.

I know of one series locally that does three races a year, they are shorter sprints though and cost around $65/ea + USAT fee.  I like their early season race, my complaint about them is that later in the year I want a bit more of a challenge than the 300m'ish swim, 10 mile bike and sub 5K run they cater to.  Otherwise these are nicely run races as well but pushing the cost of the ultra professional Setup Events triathlons.

In short, yes I'll do inexpensive races if I like the course and feel it has some organization to make it successful, reasonably safe, etc.

Probably, in fact I'm more likely to race a low-budget (as long as it's safely managed) tri because I can do more of them.  I ran my first 5K in 3 years this past weekend.  Why?  With the focus on longer distance tri's, I didn't see a need to spend $20-25 for a 5K.  When my mom asked about doing the 5K, I told her I'd go to cheer her, but would probably skip the race.  Turns out registration was $8 instead of the $20-25 I was expecting, so I paid the $8 and ran it.  A shirt, if I wanted it, was an additional $8 (I skipped it).

My brother is part of a running club where they have weekly and/or monthly races for something like $3.  Show up, pay $3, sign the release, and run.  Not sure if they're providing water during the 5K (they have it at the end), and I'm pretty sure they're not using timing chips and probably not race numbers either.

I would probably do a lot more tris if they were low budget.  I've only used a bike aid station once because I dropped my water bottle and am happy to wear my fuelbelt on the run to avoid contributing to the paper cup mess.  I can't stand finisher's medals because it's a waste of resources imo and just ends up in the trash.

$$$$ and having to get up @ 3am are the only reasons I don't race more.

That's how most of the triathlons (particularly sprints) here in Oklahoma are anyways, except they do give away useless shirts (though one does do tech shirts) and they do have ok course support. They are usually $50-60, but the AG prizes are usually pretty bad (I've gotten a cheap medal at one and at another a cheap bag that should have been included with the race packet in the first place).

Wouldn't really care for a low budget race.  I mean race entry fees are not that much compared to all the other money spent on this sport.  Also, one of the things I like about doing Tris is that a Joe-smo like me can race in what could very easily be, and sometimes is, a professional race.  Balloons, announcers, T-shirts.....  I like it.

If I have a choice between a nice decked out race and a budget race, I'm going for the decked out one.  If it's between a budget race and no race..... I’ll go budget.

However, as the guys here at work tell me, my opinion doesn't matter because I’m a DINK (dual income no kids).

Well, I've never gotten a finisher's medal in a triathlon (only for the half marathon I did), and t-shirts are mostly for the principal of the thing, I certainly don't need yet another race t-shirt.  As long as they had adequate support for organizing the race and ensuring safety, that would be fine.

The Camp Pendleton races, by the way, have pretty good support.  I did an Oly there last year, and they had plenty of fluid stations offering both water & sports drink.  They're pretty skimpy on the schwag, but otherwise good support.

Adding to the question--what if the cost tradeoff was that you only got your finish time, no splits?

I wish more races would offer the T-shirt or the Tech shirt as an option, so you could get one if you wanted it and have the registration fee bump down a bit - even if it was only $5. In most cases, the "small" tech shirt fits more like a Large on petite women, and I never end up wearing them, even though they are really nice shirts.

We have a couple of "no frills" running events around town where they use leftover numbers from old races, a jug of water and Gatorade at the finish line, and that's about it. Someone does bring out a microphone and a speaker to address the "crowd" of about 100, and the guys from the local running shop volunteer to do the timing. I think the entry fees are around $10 or $12. Somtimes it's nice to have a small, no-frills event.

It really depends.  Where is the 35-60 going, if everything is minimal?  A charity?  I can provide my own minimal support and do my own tri for $5-10 if I go the fancy beach and then treat myself at DQ later.

I would require timing with splits, some purpose to the money (charity), lifeguards, some bike course support like at busy intersections, and one water stop on the run.  Otherwise I would just do my own thing.

I would agree that Camp Pendleton has an awesome race series that is well supported and cheap. I just wish there were more like it.

Answering your question, I would be willing to race if there were no splits. I've done a couple races that didn't provide splits and just hit the lap button on my watch they were in the 60 to 70 dollar range for a Tri here in San Diego. I think the range of race entry fees may vary regionally.

This. I have a couple of nice tech shirts that are gigantic on me, so I can't even wear them to hang around in. The cotton tees I get at most races, I use as pjs. It seems like for running races, they tend to have more female-friendly sizes. All the shirts I have that actually fit, cotton or tech, are from running races (and one swim/run biathlon thing).

I LOVE budget racing!

I'm in it more for the training, and the races are small benchmarks of how I'm coming along.

Don't need the bling, don't need the hype. Just give me a fair, measured course, and I'll do it if it's not expensive.

$35+ standalone 5ks kill me...unfortunately $30-$40 seems to be the norm nowadays. What happened to the good o'l days of local running clubs sponsoring an "unofficial" but accurately measured club 5k every weekend for about $1-$4 a pop?

Actually had another thought, we have a summer aquathlon series (800 yd swim, 3.1 mi run) and it costs $5/race.  Nothing fancy, stopwatch start per wave, you get a swim and a run split (with the normal human error).  There is water and snacks at the end.  Tshirts are optional, <$10 if I recall.  If you do more than 5 races (8-9 available per summer) you can qualify for the championship race which is usually just a fun race.  Top 3 per AG get series awards (& top 3 overall).  There is a kids race as well that costs $1 (200 yd swim, 1 mi run).

I guess I have been trained properly by the local races as I did that series also and have just assumed that was the norm! (my first season of Tri's) Water support on the bike would be an interesting idea although I doubt I would use it on anything under a 30 ride.  I think there was an option to register for all three for $70-80.
