Subject: Time for a Bento Box....
I am looking at buying a Bento Box and noticed their are two sized large and small.   The large holds 10 gels or 6 bars and the small holds 6 gels or 2 bars.  Anybody use them for an IM distance and how did it workout for you?  What size did you go with?

I used the large for my HIM and IM.  I wouldn't consider a smaller one.

I used a large for my HIM, and will use it at IMAZ. The large one works better for training too since I have to carry a wallet, cell phone, etc.

I have a small one- wish I had the large one though.  With the small one I had to carry a lot of stuff in the pockets of my bike jersey during IM training, which I don't like doing because I like to use the pockets for trash.

I used to have one. I kept my a tube and CO2 in there. I gave it away, though. I keep all my nutrition plus the tube and Co2 in my jersey pockets now.

OK, after reading a very long thread on the OTHER tri forum based on info from MIT windtunnel tests, it seems that Bento Boxes actually make your bike MORE aero!! I guess it smooths out the flow of air off the stem. Maybe I WILL get a new one.

I used one for IM last year and it came in very handy!!  I have the small one and would have liked the big one.  Like others have said, you can carry all of your nutrition in there.  If it's in my jersey pocket, I have a tendency to forget it's there and then not eat.  If it's in your face, you're reminded to eat.

Also, depending on  your set-up, you can put your Gel flask on your stem.  That way you have a spot for your Bento Box on your top tube.

and if you add a aero bottle it will be even better the gel flask on the top tube might be funtional but not aero at all...

Curious...what is the big deal about Bento Box's over at ST or in general?

There's a current thread discussing data from the MIT cycling team in wind tunnel test. It's actually a very good thread. It showed that having a Bento Box on your top tibe behind the stem was faster than not having it there. The reason is that the cylinder shape of the stem creates aero dynamic eddies which reduce overall aero efficiency. The Bento Box breaks up that distrurbance for the better.
However, if you have Vision bars with the tapered stem, like I do, then its' already aero and the Bento Box would ruin that benefit.

So if I put the gel flask in the Bento Box I can finally break 23MPH average on a HIM?

You're a genius Jorge!

That or just train more and race less

I was going to try to write something on why a know-nothing, unsophisticated, baby to the sport like myself might be somewhat happy to see the much-maligned and ridiculed Bento Box get a reprieve. Because it does kinda suck to have people make fun of you for using one, and now maybe to some SMALL DEGREE we can feel vindicated. It's not ALL bad. That's all.

And if it annoys you super-sophisticated, fast, experienced, knowledgeable triathletes, I guess I understand a little bit. But I can't be an expert on everything, and all I am saying is that I would like to maybe get a new Bento Box because it seems rather harmless to this 14:30 IMer who doesn't have race wheels or an aero helmet and already looks stupid enough going 16 MPH on my 5,000 dollar bike.

No apologies needed Jess, not only based on the podcast but on the ST thread, a bento box will improve aerodynamics on most bikes with top round tubes (there are exceptions as bryancd said) and THAT’S why the MIT guys is working on a new water bottle to be placed on the top tube behind the stem.

Anyway, let the sophisticated athletes think whatever they want. (Although I wouldn’t call them fast, experienced or knowledgeable though) It is obvious that there are other more important things to worry about first and foremost such as bike fit, riding lots and a power meter. But if someone wants to gain free speed and cheap, no question that a aero helmet ($100.00) a aero bottle ($20.00) a disc cover (80.00) and even add the bento (15.00) will be a great cheap set.

Since you already have the fit, the PT and we are working on the ride lots, now we just need to get you a helmet AND the bento! (you can have my syton aero helmet as I got a new giro )

But did they weigh the miniscule aerodynamic advantage of a bento box against the weight disadvantage that it adds when climbing hills?  If some MIT nut case is gonna throw out numbers to validate his study, he better make sure he looks under the other side of the rock too.

I planned on using a large Bento at an IM, but at an expo tent I ran across an Akona BioSpeed Accessory Box that had a better shape to get a (Hammer) gel flask into comfortably. I could put a few more things in it as well.

It has a tapered body unlike the rectangular bricklike Bento Box. Of course I have yet to confirm whether or not it has any bearing on aerodynamics and the dork factor is negated by my inherent bad-assness and my "like I really give a crap what anyone thinks" attitude.

It has been the best impulse purchase I've ever made.

I have the same one and it is so much better than the name brand "Bento Box" I have on my road bike.  The furthest edges away from the stem/closest to your seat is not only tapered but pliable enough that it does not scrath up your knees.

Btw, "ST" = slowtwitch.com

Wow I thought I was the only one whose knees got assaulted by the Bento.

Finally someone mentioned the knee scratching problem. That's all I could think of when I read the first question on this thread because my answer was going to be neither the large or the small bento box because of that problem. I used one training and racing in IM Florida and hated it. I have since thrown it away because of scratched knees. My .02 cents - find another place to stash your nutrition. As far as aerodynamics, as soon as someone can figure how to make my 6'3", 200 pound more aero, I'll give up the negligible aero benefits of a bento box to save the skin around my knees.

I used two smalls one for IMC in 2006 and I plan on doing the same for IMAZ this year.

I have one in the classic location on the top tube behind the stem and one on the down tube. The head tube of my bike (older Litespeed Tachyon) is tall enough for this.

I used the second bento box as my tool kit holder. Had extra tire lever and CO2 in there. I race with tublars and like to keep the spare rolled up under the seat and that means I need to move the saddle bag somewheres. I also tape a tire lever, razor blade and CO2 to the spare. So if I need to use it, it comes off in one unit ready for action.

In the top tube bento, I kept 4 gels,NUUN, sun screen and some extra electrolytes. My main source of Cals was the 10 gel packs I up in a large bottle topped off with water on the frame. I find this easier using Gel packs or flasks.

I'm 6'3" and around 180lbs, so what ever extra drag and or weight this set up causes me is so slight I really care about it.

Unless you are at 5% body fat and ride a $8000 carbon frame with all the bells and whistles, and you rarely if ever come up out of aero for the 112 miles, then the aero disadvantages of a bento are probably not going to make much difference to you.  It's like a weekend golfer spending $1000 on a new driver because the pros hit it 3 yards farther on average.  Like he's going to remotely come close to reproducing those results.

If the bento really affects your time due to what infintesimal aero disadvantage it has, then what the he11 are you doing working?  You should be littered with sponsors and raking in $$ at your IM performances year round.
