On the fence for this one. Time of year sucks for my work, training (live in Michigan), home life (wife is teacher and I have two young boys w/school) but the course, the area look amazing!!

Travel getting there is a bit of a pain from what I can tell, but I am strongly pushing for this one.

Tell me more, tell me more Undecided

I am thinking about switching my B2B Full to the half and then doing the Full at Bone Island.  Just concerned about this being the first year for it.  I have a few weeks to think about it.  The wife is definately down for Key West in January though.

That's what I did - scaled back to the half at B2B and full at Bone Island. Jeremy is the RD at both races and my experience in four years at B2B has been extremely positive, so the fact that it's a first year event doesn't bother me.

Main concern with a full in January is trying to peak around the holidays. We're always travelling for family stuff, so my taper might start(be forced on me) quite early!

Good luck to all with their training.

Having signed up yet but I mostly likely will. I had a great time at B2B last year and I'm sure this will be equally fun if not better reagardless of first year. (weather actually kinds sucked at B2B last year)

I've been looking for awhile for a thread to pop up...

How windy is it down there that time of year? Could you still run a disc rear? Floridians, chime in!

http://www.windfinder.com/windstats/windstatistic_key_west.htm#

Statistically, looks like half head wind half tail on the course for Jan.. Average speeds don't look horrible.

Of course, if there's a bike ride going on, it'll be a +20mph wind day.

Good info, thanks. Finally found there facebook page. Curious how many entrants they are letting in to this race?

I'm doing the full at B2B this year. This race is trying to pull me in too though. Always wanted to go to the Keys so maybe the wife wife will go for a Jan trip!!

I really like the fact that I can wait until last minute to sign up for these events unlike the M-Dot events!!

Question for anyone that has been to the Keys in January/around Jan before: I know it's going to be humid because it's the Keys, but how bad is the humidity going to make a high of 74* feel?  I'm a hot weather/humid weather wuss, but I love the idea of doing a full in January.

Edited to add that a few websites claim a high of 74* will feel like 78*, but if anyone has any personal experience, that would be preferable.

Anyone else read that we'll have to collect a total of 5 wristbands from volunteers on the bike course to prove we've completed all laps?  Hope the volunteers hold them out flat handed and we can just grab as we roll by and put them on later.  Seems like a big pain.

I have not but I did see where they changed the original bike course.  Collecting wrist bands sounds pretty time consuming and crazy on a bike.  I would hope timing mats would be in use.

This has to be just a rumor......it's bad enough trying to reach out and grab a bottle of water.  I couldn't imagine the mayhem of grabbing a wrist band from 5 different people.

Nope saw it on their facebook page, seems like maybe this idea will be thought about and hopefully changed. What do you do with them, stop and take the time to put them on your wrist?

The band thingy's are totally old-school triathlon..pre-dates timing chips. They should come up with a better idea.

I've got this race on my radar.  My wife is on board with me doing it and we could stay for a week afterwards for her birthday.  I'll have to keep an eye on the number of participants.  50% refund before Dec 1 is not a bad policy.

For any locals or eastern side of Floridians, what's the daylight like that time of year. I am guessing that is the reason for the 7:30AM start that 7 would still be dark? And also gotta believe it gets dark fairly early?

I'm in!  Registered last night.

In response to the daylight hours, I live in Georgia and in January sunrise is around 7:15 - 7:30 and sunset is 5:45 - 6:00.  Being further south I would guess those times would vary 10 - 15 minutes in Key West.

So if I were to fly into Key West would I need a rental car or is everything that close and cabs aplenty to be able to avoid the car? I have heard parking is a pain around town. Just not sure about some of the pre race requisits?

Sunrise will be at 7:13 and sunset will be 5:58 on race day, so sub-11 should have you finishing while its still light out.

As to the rental car, I never get one.  Cabs are pretty easy to find, old town is mostly walkable and we usually rent bicycles to make things a bit easier... there really is no need for a rental car unless you plan to leave the rock.

Does anyone know how many spots have been taken for the full yet?  I wish set up would post the registration numbers and spots left like they do for all their other races.  Just curious as to the current status of the race especially seeing that B2B has over 240 spots left (for the full).

If you look on the website and click Participant Info -> Participants -> Full you will see the list of current participants.  Right now it is at 94 for the full.
