I received a scary call this morning from my daughter's elementary school.  A parent had apparently brought a gun to campus and been arrested.  What grown adult brings a gun to an elementary school?  Things like this just make me want to hide in a hole with my kids and never let them out of my sight.  (Yes I do know how unreasonable that is.)

Obviously I don't know the context of the "bringing the gun to the campus" part, but I'm curious if someone brought a gun to school and was waving it around which would obviously be very bad.  Or if someone who was legally carrying concealed or legally open carrying that wondered onto school property with no mal intent.  Two very different scenarios.

I know in Nebraska you can legally carry a gun in a vehicle on school grounds but you cannot get out of your vehicle.

Either way, I'm glad nothing serious came of it.

In NC you are not even allowed to drive on campus with a gun in the car.

Just did a quick google and found a news article on it:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/09/19/3541239/police-woman-had-gun-on-school.html

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the woman called 911 asking for their help because she was being followed. Police searched her car on campus and discovered the gun.

The woman has a permit to carry a firearm, but it's against the law to have firearms on a school campus, police said.

Yikes, call the cops for help and get your car searched and arrested.  Nice.  Repeat after me:  "Officer I do not consent to a search of my vehicle"  This PSA provided by tuwood

I too would be curious to the specific circumstances before getting too freaked out.  Schools now have very strick reaction policies that sometimes do not take into account common sense.

Actually, when she drove on campus she already broke the law and she didn't disclose the presence of the gun to the police who responded to her call as is required by her conceal carry permit.

I don't think it matters.  She brought a gun onto campus.  And, if she was that scared for her life, why bring that to a bunch of vulnerable kids?  There are plenty of businesses she had to have driven passed if she was really worried about her safety and looking for other people to stay safe.

I just had another thought.  The legal definition of campus can be very different and misleading as well.  For example the sidewalk and curb surrounding schools in NE is considered "school property".  So in my Concealed Carry class they said to be very careful if you're pulled over in or near a school because if you step out of your vehicle (even on the street) while carrying you are technically committing a crime.

I agree it does seem strange to drive to a school.  I'm just throwing out hypotheticals and such based on very little information.

The important thing is nothing serious happened and your kiddo's are safe.  That's also not a good phone call to receive no matter what the circumstances.

In Nevada, you may carry a concealed firearm on the premises of any public building except for the following locations:

    • airports,
    • public schools and private schools (without written permission)
    • child-care facilities
    • facilities belonging to the University of Nevada, the Community College System, any other vocational/technical school (without written permission), and any other property belonging to the Nevada System of Higher Education
    • all buildings owned or occupied by the federal, state, or local government
    • law enforcement agency facilities
    • courthouses and courtrooms (judges and some employees are exempt)
    • prisons, jails and detention facilities
    • any buildings with metal detectors or signs prohibiting firearms at each public entrance, or places where carrying concealed firearms is prohibited by federal or state law

I'm obviously not aware of every state's individual laws, but this seems to be pretty common from what I DO know.  Schools seems pretty obvious whether you have mal intentions or not.

I taught DARE in rlrmentary schools for 2 years and even as a police officer in full uniform I would get "looks" for carrying my duty weapon into schools. I had many srudent and even teachers ask is the gun was loaded or why I didn't leave the gun in my squad car while I taught DARE. Really????

Just to clarify that is the NC law.  In other states (e.g. FL) you only have to disclose that you have a weapon in the vehicle on demand from the officer.

Not saying that it's not a good idea to do so anyway.

This is a good resource to learn the laws of your state:

Those "Gun Free" zones are what ensure that gun-wielding crazies who decide to shoot up a school will have a good amount of time to wreak havoc before police arrive.

I can understand her thinking even though it was flawed. She has a legal right to carry her weapon in her vehicle and she had to pick up her kid from school.  When she gets out of her car she leaves the firearm in the vehicle thinking it’s not going on her person into the school so there is no danger (I happen to agree with this) but the fact is she was breaking the law and she will get punished for breaking it.

I think this falls under a “wow that was a bad idea” type of things but if this happened at my kids school I wouldn’t feel they were in danger. Now the phone call would have freaked me out big time that is something totally different but as for the facts of what happened it was just bad judgment or a lack of knowledge of the law and after all the court stuff she will have to do for this I will bet she will never do it again.

This happens quite a lot here in NC.  People just need to know where they're prohibited from carrying their firearms.  If you're heading to a school zone, don't bring the shotgun, hunting rifle, or keep the handgun in the car.  Concealed permit or not - it's plain illegal and everyone burned by it, loses.  It's publicized enough times that if you own a firearm, you really out to know it.

Ha! I was thinking along those lines.   Anyone who shouldnt have a gun or has one illegally doesnt give a damn about "school zones" etc.   The laws are there so that people have the perception of feeling safe, but I have doubt of the actual effectiveness.   That said, common sense seems to be missed in this case.   I do agree by the way with the no guns on campus policy, but would love to see the stats of how many gun related deaths or injuries there have been in schoold that were caused by someone with a CCL.   My guess is pretty low.

If she was being followed and felt threatened enough to call 911, as was stated in the article, I would think she would be more in the mindset of get to a well populated area and call the police.  It is what women are told to do in pretty much every self-defense class there is.  What safer place to be than a school or a police station?

this is not what happened.  she wasn't taking a kid to school, she pulled off at the school because she thought she was being followed.

agreed, especially because it was probably along the lines of "the school is on lockdown because a woman brought a gun on campus" with no context or further information.  on review of the situation a day later, this seems to be no big deal, but of course had the school not called and these stories showed up in the paper, there would be a straight up outrage.

When I was a kid we would go pheasant and rabbit hunting some mornings before school......sometimes we'd  end up moving our shotguns from one truck to another on the school parking lot.  Nobody cared.  35 years doesn't seem like that long ago.

I know times have changed, but sometimes I think it's crazy just how much they have.

I graduated in 1978 up until about 89 or 90 studetns could brind rifels shot guns to school (disassembled to refinsh stocks in wood shop, or reblue barrels in metal shop. we even had a drawer full of old fiels that got turned into knife blades.
