Our local series switched to almost all dri-fit shirts over the last 2 years which was great, but now I have a zillion dri-fit shirts. I am hearing more people say they'd prefer a cotton shirt now. Problem is - I've got a zillion cotton shirts too! So, we just got the go ahead to do a local race and I'm trying to think outside the box for race swag. Share your favorites and while you're at it - what's your favorite prizes? How many medals can one really display? (aside from straight out cash, I've seen that done at local races but I don't think our budget will permit it!) |

The Gate River Run in Jacksonville (the 15k national championship race) has offered beer glasses as part of race swag for years. I've qot quite the collection. If you're in the southeast - you still have time to make this race - it's coming up on March 13th. |

I also like a nice cinch bag, I have two and I use both of them and could use another. I use one only for my spinning shoes and use the other as a gym bag sometimes. A race belt would be a nice touch, I can't imagine they are that expensive. Maybe something colorful with the race name on it to change things up a bit. |

Good swag is important to me, especially if it's a local race. My view is that the race director is competing for my dollar, and while a well produced race is most important, good swag goes a long way to getting me to recommend the race and come back the next year. I like a quality middle-weight cotton T-shirt that I can wear casually. It needs to be in a a wearable color not some "guess they got the big discount at the printers" color. One race I was in handed out this hideous unwearable orange shirts. Gee thanks! I didn't race again the next year. Also the printing needs to be quality. One huge local 10K had a $50 registration fee and the T shirt was a no-name heather gray with the rectangular transfer iron-on decal thing that would flake off in five or ten washings. I passed on the race. Quality big mouth bike bottles are great. Getting a few companies to drop in their products is also great. My wife loves these hair band things that I find in a bag every once in a while; she's very happy when I hand them over. One race I gave out had little 1" high rubber duckies that my youngest thought was fun. The midget Clif bars and all that are also good. Another local race is affiliated with a hospital and they include a mini first aid kit. That was pretty nice. |

I have seen this done at a number of smaller local races, where you can buy the shirt if you want, no finisher medal stuff. |

I understand that many people like their shirts. Like the OP, though, I have too many cotton and tech shirts to wear. Although I sometimes receive the coolest shirts (2010 Austin Marathon), I'd say that 4 out of 5 race shirts are not very attractive and I'll only keep the ones from long races that I care about. Beer mugs are nice. A beer with the mug is even better. |

The women love having something specific to them and the female s/o's of the racers love to get something out of the deal besides the opportunity to take pictures! That would be a good also...an action photo from the race. I have enough t-shirts, water bottles, and yuk flavors from Clif and Hammer to last a lifetime. |

I like the tech shirts I REALLY like the sweat vac hats Bike socks are always wanted. Yankz! would be great. Medals are okay, especially the unique ones Gu, Hammer stuff, etc Hand towels are okay but not highest on my list of wants That's probably in the order of stuff I remember and like. |

I had my first one made this year - and I will keep a collection to make a second. I love the idea of beer glasses!!! Visor/towel would also be cool. I got a tote bag at the last race which was neat. I'm going to go for the socks too - I got a pair of IM ones at Steelhead and they are my favourite socks ever! Water bottles would be great for me too - I am always losing them! Prizes = Michelin Pro3 race tires or glasses, beer mugs, plates, statue things like minature swimers, cyclist, runners (You could go with a different one each year so folks would have to hit 3 years to get all three). |

Maybe insulated water bottles, maybe race belts. I could see more pint glasses - I can always use/display them. Or big coffee mugs. My best swag so far was from Steelman last year - a very nice transition bag. Bento boxes are also nice, but once you have a couple, they are also going to go into the "meh" category. Maybe the Yankz. I think it depends on who the race mainly draws. Newbies can use a lot more of the race related stuff than experienced people. Thinking way outside the box, I have a nice small battery operated desk clock I got from a place I worked. I could see having a similar little clock, with the race name imprinted on it, or maybe a place to put a race picture or medal from the race. |

The Sammy Towel (printed w/ race logo?), running gloves, yankz or similar brand quick laces, gel packs, bars, etc. Though I also agree with others in this thread - lower race fees with no swag would be my first choice. |

I don't even mind an ugly color too much because I'm just working out in it. Cotton shirts need to look nicer. I like the hat idea, too. I'm doing a race this weekend for a pint glass. I know of one or two races that give belt buckles to the winners. While most might not wear them, no one is going to wear a medal out anywhere. How about a lottery ticket. I refuse to buy them myself, but free(ish) chance to win is fun. |

It is a pool swim tri, so I guess there will be a lot of first timers, but I suspect we will have a good number of veterans because of the area (lots of fast folks around here!) I'm thinking I'll try to get beer mugs for winners, maybe I can even get our local distributer to kick in some brew for winners? OR we have lots of local wineries, maybe wine glasses and wine? As far as swag for racers go, I'm still thinking on that one, but keep the ideas rolling in! Maybe more RD's will listen! |
