Veteran 485 Elmira, ON | Subject: Guleph Lake Triathlon I'm registered in the Olympic Relay Tri on June 19th, but have never competed at Guelph Lake. I'm doing the swim leg of the event. 1.5km. My question is for anyone who has been there....do you recommend a wet suit or not? Is the lake that cold, or would I be ok in my tri shorts. For 1.5km I'm concerned about overheating in a wet suit, but not sure if the lake is that cold that I'll actually require one to perform better....I've never liked wet suits or even swim caps for that matter...especially for distances over 200m as they have the same effect of overheating. I understand I'll have to wear one for the full 1.5km here though. Any helpful hints on Guelph Lake much appreciated. If you've gone there, perhaps you could give me a little insight into the format, how early should be there, etc.! Thanks!

Regular 282 Toronto, ON | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon I'm swimming in the sprint the day before. I haven't done it before but I'm swimming with my tri group tonight and I know a lot of them have so I'll ask for you. I'd guess yes for the wetsuit if only because it's been so cold that I can't imagine any lakes are warm enough at this point. |

Extreme Veteran 532 South Park, PA | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon For the June race the water is usually ok for wetsuits. Not sure how the weather has been up there but its a small lake so warms quickly so should be ok without if you prefer The run up to transition is a lung buster. Have fun. k |

Veteran 190 | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon Two years ago we had a cool spring and the water was cold and I race Guelph in only Tri-shorts. Last year I vowed not to be that cold again so I bought a wetsuit and we ended up having a warm spring and the water was much warmer but I still wore my wetsuit and I'm glad I did. Guelph lake is pretty big and deep and I'm guessing it won't warm up a tonne in the next few weeks. Plus both years I've raced it there was quite a lot of chop so I was glad to be higher in the water with my wetsuit. I'm doing the OLY distance this year so I'll be interested to see how it goes with the double loop/beach run. There is a bit of a run up the hill from the lake to transition (400m?) but if you are doing the relay you can book it knowing you won't have to hop on a bike after. |

I've also done the mini sprint and sprint and wore a wetsuit both years. There are people who go without but the majority of the field will wear one. I agree on the choppy water - i was surprised last year by it and was happy to have it when we turned headlong into the chop. |

Veteran 485 Elmira, ON | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon I appreciate all the responses. Thank you very much. Depending on the weather and my trial run next weekend at the lake, I'll know whether to wear one. One last question...how do the transitions work? If I'm swimming, and have to sprint approx. 100m meters up the beach after the swim is this counted in my swim time? Where do I go to stop the clock and how do I meet up with my cyclist? How do we "pass the baton" so to speak so they can be off and cycling down the road!

Master 4119 Toronto | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon I don't remember if the run up to transition is counted in your swim time - there's definitely a separate time on my listing from last year for both T1 & T2. But i think the run may count in your swim time with the mats being right around the transition area. As for the relay - i believe that you will have one timing chip for your team (goes around the ankle) and you pass it off once you get to transition. Anyone know better than me? I haven't done a relay yet ... |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon Hi Gang. I live and tri in Guelph. I've done the Guelph races for the past few years and in June "most" athletes wear wetsuits. I was out at the lake last week and it was to say the least a bit nipply. Had a wet suit which was fine but the feet hands and face got a quite cool. The wetsuit would be optional but the cap is mandatory unless you have a latex allergy. If so let the race directors/organizers know when you register. With the good weather we are having now the lake should warm up tremendously. I ride out to the lake fairly often for swims and if I remember to take my thermometer I'll check the temp and advise on here. I believe the timing chip for transition from the swim to bike is up the hill and part way down the run into the actual transition area. For the relay you will get one timing chip for the team which will have to be transferred from one athlete to the other once you reach transition. The clock stops on your swim when you run across the timing mat. At that point you are on your T1 time and it is up to both you and whomever is biking for you to move quickly and smoothly through the transition and out onto the road. I believe you MUSY transfer the chip before the bike racer removes the bike from the rack. ( check at the race on this particular item if not sure as there may be penalties or disqualification if not done right.) Edited by Redknight 2011-05-30 3:00 PM |

Don't know a place in Guelph but a running free store oppened in Orangeville a month ago and I'm sure they rent wetsuits for the weekend. You can also rent one at Swim & Sports (swimandsports.com) in Brampton-Mississauga |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon You can rent wetsuits at the Running Works in Guelph. I think about $40.00 for a week but you need to reserve early as they go quick. Was out at Guelph Lake for a swim yesterday and the water was great. don't know the temp but it had warmed up quite a bit from the previous Thursday. |

Regular 135 | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon We got in Guelph Lake for the first OWS late yesterday afternoon and it was actually quite enjoyable. It was a little cooler in the deeper parts in the centre but it wasn't anywhere near the temps as last year at the same time. Feet, hands and face were fine. I was surprized....we had wetsuits on and plan on them for the Olympic June 19th likely. Felt good to get back in the open water. |

Veteran 485 Elmira, ON | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon I go into Guelph Lake yesterday afternoon. June 5th. Ya...no doubt in my mind the tri suit will help! I'm still concerned that over 1.5km there is the potential for overheating effecting the performance of my swim...but what do you do? Cramp up at the water temp initially? It's cold... June 19th..Olympic Try Relay. ready to go! |

Have done this race for years and never had a problem with overheating and really only see a handful of athletes without wetsuits. Good luck on your race. |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon Went and did the course yesterday - here are my thoughts, since it's been a year. Swim - water felt "warm". But this may have something to do with the fact it felt so cool out. However, there was one woman swimming with no wetsuit, and she seemed fine. 1 week to go. |

It is getting quite pathetic. It's hard for people doing the try-a-tri to get a decent speed because of those conditions and often the headwind climbing to the turn around point. I much prefer the Olympic distance that gives you opportunity to build up your speed. Hope the forecast holds for Sunday - should make for a fast course. Hope you have a great race. |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon Orillia is sort of similar this way in that some stretches of the road are really in need of repair. But given the short distance of the Sprint, it feels like almost 1/2 the ride is on lousy roads. |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: Guleph Lake Triathlon I live in Guelph and am in full agreement with you. The first and last stretch of the road is very poor for a paved road. We have, at the Guelph Triathlon Club, talked to the county about the road given the Guelph tri weekends are such big events but they feel they have other priorities than paving that particular stretch of road, even though it is a major road into the Guelph conservation area. I don't think any of the people involved in the county board are triathletes The lake is high and the temp is not bad. I am out there 2-3 times a week. Although you can go without a wetsuit there are very few who do. You will most likely see a few fewer wetsuits in the tri-a-tri due to the time it takes to remove the suit compared with a little discomfort in the water. These are the people who really want to podium. I'll certainly be wearing mine for the Olympic on Sunday. Good luck to everyone racing here this weekend. |
