I'm actually doing ok considering the time of year. I'd like to get to get two rides of the course in before race day. Maybe one May and one in June?

Sounds like a good plan, the bike was my downfall last year!

I am also planning my second try at the musselman for retribution, except I am only talking the mini-mussel.  It was my first tri ever last year (provoked by an old highschool friend) and I blundered the swim, which of course, set the tone for the whole race.  I ended up walking and wheezing over the finish line, but I did it. I actually came in last in my age group! Since then I have done 3 other sprint tri's and am training for my first olympic (Memphis in May).  I grew up in the Geneva, NY area, but have lived in TN for the past 10 years.  I plan to make the Mussel an annual event, and hope to build up to the half iron in 2011.  Good luck to all!

Good luck to you with the minimussel as well as your other races!  In past years BT has ran the aide station on the run course for the minimussel so assuming we are doing it again, look for some of us on the run!!

Wow. I did not realize this was sneaking up on me. I guess it is time to start a training plan for the HIM. I did it last year and had a blast. My family loved it. My wife and her little sister are making the Sprint their first Tri and neither one know how to swim yet.

I'm getting excited (and worried) - my first HIM!  My goal is simply to finish happy - probably around 6.5 hours but the biking is a huge unknown for me.

My training has been going well up to now but this weekend I had my first 2.5 hour bike and ended up calling my DH for a ride home (flat tire and crash all within 30 minutes).  I did, however, change my first flat successfully - which seems like a victory of some sort Tongue out

What training plans are folks using - I'm using the free BT one, but adding longer long runs (I come from a running background) and some longer long bike rides (I figure I'll be on the bike at least 3.5 hours and I'd better do that a few times).

Anyone have any helpful hints on the course or training?

BT will be manning the run aid station on Saturday morning again this year. I'll be putting out a call for volunteers in the weeks leading up to the race.

Catalana, I did a review of the bike course last year. The course hasn't changed, but there may have been some road work. I'm hoping to get two rides of the course in before race day so if there's anything to report about road conditions I should be able to report them beforehand.

Here is the link to the Musselman bike course.  I did do IMLou for couldn't tell you.  I do if the wind blowing it will be nasty in the Ovid area and the hill fresh off of Cayuga Lake is a quad burner.

The Musselman is 9 weeks and 6 days away.  From this point on, every workout counts.

Dudley and I will be riding the course on Sunday. All are welcome to join us. We'll be leaving from the parking lot in Lakefront Park* at 11:00am sharp.

*Note that this is not the same park as the transition area. That's Seneca Lake State Park.  Lakefront is west of the transition area.  Parking is free.

Newbie here.  Great report.  Really helped.  Official website is a bit vauge on bike aid stations.  Anything you can remember about how they run their bike aid stations and if they are spaced out fairly evenly?  Thanks

This will be my first time doing this race.  I still need to book a room.  Where do you all normally stay?  The athletes' village?

Help Wanted!
No Pay! No Benefits! All the Vanilla HammerGel You Can Eat!

BT has run the aid station on the run course at the Mini-Mussel for the past few years and this year the tradition continues.

We're looking for a small medium huge group of people to help out. Have you volunteered at a race this year? No? Well here's that opportunity to assuage your conscience and cross something off of your to-do list, Sparky!

This is lots of fun because there are so many people doing their first tri at this race. It's really inspirational. You get to spend the morning with other BTers cheering on and helping out hundreds of athletes from all over the country. It doesn't take much time, about an hour and a half in the morning. You'll need to be there by 9:30am. The aid station is located at the 1 mile point on the run course, just south of the west end of Park Rd. MAP If you're doing the Musselman on Sunday (like me), this is a great way to get psyched up for your race. Or to get your mind off of the fact that you'll be doing a half-ironman in 24 hours.

If you can help out, please let me know so we'll have an idea of how many people we can expect. You can post here, send me a PM or send me an email.

Bring a friend! Kids/spouses/significant others/ insignificant others/third cousins twice removed are all welcome!

Hello,
I'm traveling up to New York from Florida for the musselman and was wondering if an aero helmet would be beneficial with the two major climbs?
Thank you
