I just got an iPhone today, I can't wait to go home and play with it tonight.

I was just curious, what are your favorite apps to use?

Also, any good tips for a first time iPhone owner?

Tip: Otterbox

They are looking to IPO too. $10mm in sales last year, $100mm this year. Not bad, huh?The weather channel app is also a must-have.

I don't know if it's the best app because I haven't had my iPhone very long, but "Bump" is very cool.  You can transfer files and apps to someone else with "Bump" by merely bumping your phones together.

Another cool one is "SoundHound" - if a song is playing, the app will listen to it for few seconds and come back and tell what the name/artist etc. is.

+1 on the OtterBox.

Otterbox commuter case. Worth every penny. I've dropped my phone quite a few times and I'm sure it's the reason my phone isn't destroyed.

Apps: Get talkatone. You can use it to make wifi calls using your google talk number. Other apps do this, but they still use regular minutes. This one doesn't. I use it for conference calls for work mainly and it's saved me a ton of $$.

Netflix...I survived many trainer rides thanks to netflix on my phone.

Verbs IM: Instant messenger app. It's free. Works with gtalk, yahoo, aim, etc.

Skee-ball: Not nearly as fun as angry birds, but is a nice diversion when the pigs are kicking your butt

BT app: if you use the workout log on this site, the BT app is handy

Enjoy the phone!

Agree on the otterbox, too - it's the best! I love the cyclingnews app for tracking pro cycling. Photoshop express (PS Express) is awesome if you take a lot of photos - you can clean up your pics for free. X2 on the weather channel app - I use it regularly and the radar maps have been clutch on some camping trips. If you run, runkeeper is nice - it logs your distance/time via GPS. As a guitar player - GuiTune Lite is sweet - a tuner on your phone Fandango is great for pulling up your local theaters/times. Another one I use when I am working on my diet is MyFitnessPal - it has a great food log/diary with preloaded menu/store items from across the U.S. Last - I love the surf and ski report apps, MSW and Ski & Snow.

Have fun!

How did I forget Pandora? I also use the Redbox app a lot when heading to the kids on Friday night so I can reserve a movie before all the good ones are taken. Kind of like the FIOS remote control app too, fun to change channels from the phone.

If you fly a lot, get the apps for the airlines you use the most.  I used the Delta app quite a bit on my recent trip to NYC.  It was great for checking in, checking bags, getting a boarding pass that will scan at security check and the gate, etc without having to go thru an email link from the airline.

I have a droid, so I'm not sure if it's on the Iphone, but I assume it is (or something similar).  If you like music, shazam rocks.  Hear a song you like and don't know the name/artist?  Hit a button, it listens for 10-15 seconds, and then tells you all the info, and also lets you buy it on the spot.

Sorry for the hijack, my 13-yr. old daughter is getting her first cellphone, we decided to make it an iPhone 4S (Verizon), w/ Otterbox.

Following the mantra "trust but verify", can someone suggest monitoring apps, aka parental "spyware"?  Outside of iPhone apps, I saw Verizon has a monitoring service, but don't know if this is any better than the iPhone apps.

https://wbillpay.verizonwireless.com/vzw/nos/uc/uc_overview.jsp

We're going to be totally upfront with her that the iPhone is to be used responsibly, and that the monitoring is to confirm she is not abusing the privilege of having a phone (more concerned about it being used as a time-waster, I trust her not to surf for inappropriate content).  Also, if she ever receives any improper texts (cyberbullying), I want to be able to recover them.

Thanks.

Maybe not quite what you're asking for, but the Find my Friend app will let you see where she is on a map.  It also helps to find lost phones, not that 13 year old girls are ever irresponsible with their possessions.

Here's a tip I got after several weeks of using the iPhone for email and texting and web browsing and was so happy to learn about this feature; if you only want one number or symbol, press the .?123 button and hold it until the screen changes, keep your finger on the screen and slide over to the number/symbol you want, then let go; now you have the number/symbol in your message and you're back and the qwerty keypad.

Dude, you're not kidding.  I've had an Iphone for a while and have been looking for a true voice-activated GPS map app which I don't have to pay $$.  I downloaded Mapquest Mobile 4 last week upon your recommendation and found it to be quite awesome.  Thanks for the tip.  I don't think I would have found that one on my own!

Here's another question:  How big of a data plan do you use?  My wife and I are coming back to the US and will be getting iPhones, we just don't know much about the data plans.  Can anyone give me an idea?  We'll be using them to Facebook, check email, espn, maybe a youtube clip every once in a while, nothing major.

Thanks.....27 hours until we leave

Data plan is unlimited

Average monthly usage over the past eighteen months is ~500mb, with a peak of about 750mb.

I'm almost ashamed to admit it but I ordered a 4S yesterday.  Unfortunately, I'm stuck waiting until at least the 6th to receive it.  Grandfathered unlimited data plan at least!

Another question: Is it worth waiting the week or so after we get home to pick up the new 4s or would the currently available iPhone work just as well.  We don't need the phone for work or watching movies, just email, facebook...teenie bopper type stuff.

Thanks again.
