New user 45 | Subject: Peeing??? Well it was finally broght up on the long ride thread so I'll dive in a little deeper. Peeing is my downfall. It has been really hot and I prehydrate until I'm peeing clear and maintain that on my bike rides. The problem is sometimes it seems like I have to pee every 10 miles. I was nervous and very hydrated for my 112 last weekend and had peed 5 times 28 miles in. I lost track after that. How do you pee while riding. I am a guy and I've heard of sticking "it" down your leg ( Geez, I'm going to get banned from this site i know it). The problem was that it looked like I was going to pee all over my water bottle so I aborted and pulled over. What are some peeing tips and I feel like I'm peeing too much. I sip Cytomax/Metabol (3 scoops of each) every 20 minutes and keep drinking water through my aerobottle/camelback. |

Champion 14571 the alamo city, Texas | Subject: RE: Peeing??? your pee should not be clear, it should be lemon-y yellow. only drink enough to be light yellow and keep THAT color and you shouldn't pee as much. if you are clear you are prob drinking too much and your body is just going to keep flushing water through...
if talking about peeing on a bike got you booted from this site there wouldn't be many members left... |

New user 45 | Subject: RE: Peeing??? Again, I'm new at the IM distance so excuse my ignorance but . . . In a race you'll have other riders in close proximity. DOn't you run the risk of hitting them with spray, mist, or splatter. And what are the peeing rules in IM? Can you get DQed for going behind a tree? So if I'm going to be peeing down my leg during the race, I should have some baby wipes and new shorts in my run bag? This is all good stuff people. Keep the pee tips coming!!!! |

Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: RE: Peeing??? I agree with what has been posted, if your urine is clean you may be over hydrated...dial the fluids back some and see how that works. If you pee on someone on the bike, they were probably drafting anyway and needed to get peed on. ~Mike |

Member 118 West Simsbury, CT | Subject: RE: Peeing??? In a race, the world is your toilet! All of the methods previously mentioned will get the job done. And for any ladies thinking they are missing out because they don't have the "plumbing", you're wrong. All the top female pros just "let it go" when the meter says 'full' on the bike. Just stand up in the pedals and let it fly. Is it gross? I don't know. I'd much rather have urine, coke, gatorade, snot, saliva, water and salt all over me instead of finishing a race saying "yeah, well I would've been 5 minutes faster if I didn't stop to pee XXX times!". Just do it! |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Peeing??? One thing that can effect how often you need to urinate is if you are replacing sweat which is salt water with fluid that does not have enough sodium/electrolytes in it, your body in an effort to balance electrolytes gets rid of fluids to get electrolytes right. But urinating 5 times by 28 miles makes me think you have consumed to much liquid. I can urinate any where almost racing on the bike it is easy..I don't stand I just go..but women and men are different. I try to keep feet at 9 and 3 o'clock as it works better to keep urine out of my shoes. Have you done a sweat test? Easy way to do it on long rides, weigh yourself naked before your long rides, then drink normal, keep track of what you drink and how much, weigh yourself naked with sweat wiped off after your ride so you can see if you maintained your weight. For each pound you are down you should have consumed about 16 oz more liquid. All my IM long rides I would check my weight before and after which clued me if I was hydrating correctly. |

Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: Peeing??? Can't help the ladies, but I'm a dude and I have successfully peed on the bike without getting it on myself at all many times. It involves standing, bringing the "hose" (as we've apparently called it) out the top of the shorts, and sort of angling my whole body to the side. Unclipping one pedal will help in the beginning. |

Expert 944 Waller County, TX | Subject: RE: Peeing??? mwunderle - 2008-08-10 5:06 PM In a race, the world is your toilet! ......... Just do it! You're not a true triathlete until you can pee at anytime, anywhere. It takes some practice /training to get comfortable with the idea and the "mechanics" of getting it done, but it really is a convenience and time saver. Tips: Swim - There should be NO problems. Bike - Stand up and coast to get started. Make sure the vent (drain) holes in your bike shoes don't have duct tape on them. Run - Dump a cup of water in your shorts. Yeah, there's a lot of cleaning up to do after the race. Seems gross at first, but this can be a gross sport and the sooner you're cool with it, the less complicated your race life will be. (BTW, after a long race my wife knows not to get too close to me.) |

In training this is would be considered indecent exposure, in a race it would be a violation of both rules and the law. |

Member 36 | Subject: RE: Peeing??? I have the same questions as the original poster and the responses are contradictory. I assume those that are talking about pulling the "hose" out of their pants and peeing off the bike are not following protocol/race rules/law. Right? I assume the appropriate approach is to pee inside your bike pants down your leg. Right? |

Member 36 | Subject: RE: Peeing??? Just an fyi, per numerous IM FL race reports, there were 2 porta jons at each aid station on the bike route in 07. With an aid station every 10 miles, that is 20 porta jons on the entire bike course for 2300 participants. The race reports referred to 5-10 minute waits at each porta jon. So, if you plan to lose 5-10 minutes per pee break waiting for a porta jon, then don't learn to hose yourself down. Otherwise, time to learn to hose yourself down when sober. |

Personally my goal is to finish and if I happen to have a time 5 or even 15 minutes longer because I chose to stop at a porta-potty instead of peeing on myself and those around me, I won't mind one bit. But if I were a competitive age grouper where 5 minutes could be the difference between getting a Kona spot and not, I'd probably make the sacrifice. |

There is a great podcast out there in the land of Apple, which is hosted by elite IM/triathlete, Bevan James, the series is simply called IronMan Talk.......in one of the casts from a few months ago, he goes into great detail about how peeing on your racemates during the bike could actually be an advantage....lol. and the overall theme of the show is... "just p*ss on'm!" Edited by ifocus 2008-08-13 9:06 AM |
