Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4 AM and ate two waffles, protein shake, yogurt, coffee. Drove to Boulder from Denver and arrived at 5:20. Set up transition in numbered area and scoped out bike, run entrances and exits.
Event warmup:

Ran for 10 minutes with a few accelerations and went pee.
Rode bike for 10 minutes and went pee again.
Put on wetsuit with my body glide and pam spray on my legs and headed to the beach for a light swim warm up.
Swim
  • 31m 7s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

I'm still not a good swimmer, but I beat last years swim time by 1 minute.
I had a harder time of catching my breath this year. Maybe I was working a little harder. I couldn't find anyone to draft on. The swim was really spread out. A one point I thought I was the only one swimming. My arms seemed to have a hard time keeping a rhythm, they didn't move real fluent for some reason. Oh well, it was a decent swim for me.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder to the first bouy
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

I put on arm warmers this year because it was a little cold. That slowed my transition by 22 seconds over last year. All else was good.
What would you do differently?:

Suck it up and not where arm warmers. I didn't need them any way.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 5s
  • 25 miles
  • 20.25 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike went ok. I was 30 seconds slower than last year. I felt like I was going harder but I couldn't keep my average up.
What would you do differently?:

More intervals on the bike, and a few times trials in the weeks before.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

I missed my bike rack by one spot. T1 was very clean other than that. Beat last years T1 by a minute.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 42m 2s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good until mile 4. I had a little leg cramping. I don't think I drank enough on the bike, or the days before the race. It finally loosened up and I kept my pace. I beat last years run time by a minute and a half. That was good!
What would you do differently?:

Drink more the days before.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked aroun, ate free pasta and drank free Odells 90 schilling YUM! Walked into the water, talked to friends, watched the Pros. I got a High 5 from overall winner Nicole Deboom and Men's winner Conrad stolz. COOL!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough time to train for speed since my Ironman on June 27

Event comments:

Great volunteers, well organized, everything was on time, cool band, and oh did I say FREE BEER!

My Average MPH on the bike was 21 MPH according to the web. So I'll go with that. Hr Avg. was 156 for the whole Race. It got up to 172 on old Stage coach hill.
Wind: Some
Course: It started from Boulder Res and went into two rollers. Then a slow climb until mile 6.5 where you hit Old stage coach road hill. I think it is an 8 or 9% climb for 1.5 miles. It was so steep, many people walked their bikes up it. Then a few rollers after the top, then a screaming down hill for several miles. I hit 51 MPH at one point! Then some flats and a few rollers on back into the park.

Nice Mark!  Did you say free 90 Schilling?  I'm there next year, if for no other reason than the beer!  Great race!
