First is a big ol glass of chocolate milk, then shower, then eat, then stretch. What's your routine?

it really depends on what i have next. if i have another workout coming up, slamm snack and then get out too it, maybe some time resting.

if its the last workout of the day, either dinner then shower, or shower then dinner depending on how beat i am.

Put the bike away, make a smoothie, lie on the couch and groan for a while, shower and then log it all!

Drink chocolate milk or protein drink, enter data into Trainingpeaks, get out of sweaty clothes, stretch, eat and shower or shower and eat - depending on family's schedule.

If it is a really long hard workout, I get some water or amino vital, then after my body cools down a bit, leche chocolate. This is followed by an ice bath, which consists of me in the tub of cold water and my son chucking ice cubes at me. Then, hot shower, followed by cold beer. UNless it was a morning run, then I wait a few hours before the beer.

Long runs I drink recovery drink, either chocolate milk or recovery smoothie with milk, juice, fruit, and protein powder, right away and try to do yoga stretching within 5' of getting home. If I do my stretching later I'm more sore the next day.

After long rides I feel much better and have same recovery type food and may stretch but later.

Then I take a hot bath soak, then try to eat something healthy with whole crabs. If it was a long run I put on my sexy white compression socks.

Of course blogging my workouts after downloading my Garmin or Power meter, is quite important.

I drink a glass of chocolate milk while stretching, then I shower, put on compression tights, and relax.

Yah my spell check missed that since that is a real word.....whole grain or natural carbs. I had a pretty crappy day today...6 hours in ER but luckily I'm fine.

Chocolate Milk....Good grief. Spend another 1 min and make a recovery drink with:
Skim Milk
1 Banana
Some blueberries or strawberries
1 scoop Protein Powder
Some ice
Put in a blender and mix it up. More natural sugars and carbs, anti-oxidents, all the stuff a recovering triathlete needs. Chocolate Milk is just an excuse for a treat when there are better options. Just think about it for second and you will see. And don't start posting links to Triathlete Magazine or studies showing chocolate milk as this great recovery option. It's fine, but you can do better.

What are your thoughts on all the research that suggests chocolate milk is one of the best post exercise recovery drinks?

Clif bar, banana, down a bottle of water, maybe a can of Coke (my treat), stretch, ice bath, eat a ton of food, rest or out to play with my kids and rest later.

That in the absence of no recovery drink or a store bought one, it offers benefit. When compared to a more natural, whole foods combination like I suggest, it's a poor substitute. Seriously, compare sugar flavored with coco and milk vs. what I describe. Which is better for you?

x2.  If you look at the actual studies, what they are in fact measuring (at least in the ones I've seen) is just the ability of the various drinks (normally choc milk, fluid replacement drink of some sort, and carb replacement drink of some sort) to aid in short-term recovery (short-term as in hours, not days or weeks).  Indeed, sometimes they measure nothing other than rapidity of post-exercise glycogen resynthesis.  These studies do not address longer-term issues (overall health and fitness).
