Made a mistake in the last poll. Vote on this one instead :P

When do you use your ipod? Do you use an ipod? You can vote on multiple options if you use it for two or more...

I don't have an ipod. I do have a waterproof MP3, though. But I only use it for pool running.

No mp3 player at all.  Not interested.  I feel like I'd be missing out on some of what makes runnin so nice by being plugged into music and I think it is dangerous on the biike.

I picked up an MP3 player when I started training but quickly got rid of it.  I like being aware of everything going on around me and I read that I cannot use one during the actual tri.  I do watch TV while on the treadmill but that's a lot more boring than running outside.

Running and weight lifting, allthe time.

Bike riding, used to more often than I do now, primarily because I bought a new helmet and haven't moved my earphone thingies over.

Swimming, I've tried and decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Not for as liittle as I'm currently swimming.

Sometimes on the treadmill or the trainer, rarely when running outdoors, never cycling or swimming.

To quote a pearl izumi ad:

"Runners don't want to escape the fact that they are running.

These days you'll see a lot of people out there with MP3 players.  Blasting some indie rock to make the miles go by a little bit faster.  Every one of these people is a jogger.*  Because runners actually like to run.  And they're generally a little sad when it's over.  They don't want to be tuned into some dumb guitar solo.  They want to be tuned into every facet of their run experience.  The cadence of their footfalls.  The rhythm of their breathing.  The sounds of the world around them, car horns or wind moving through pine needles.  Sure, runners dig music, but they know that it makes them lose touch with their environment, and lose kinesthetic awareness of their bodies, and that is something they simply cannot have.

*-We know this sounds outrageous, and that many of you may get upset, but her us out; this thing is way bigger than just you or us -- it's the future of running we're talking about"

Only time I listen to music while exercising is if I'm at home, then I'll have music playing from the computer.

Running outside, always (exceptr for tri's, obviously).  Running on treadmill - if there is nothing good on TV.

Bike - never.  On the trainer, I'll watch TV/DVD's

Swim - never

Weight training - at the gym, yes.  At home, no, since I can put on my music as loud as I want.

I don't usually wear my iPod while I exercise.  The only exception would be for running on the treadmill, which I don't do very often.

I know we've done the ipod/mp3 discussion on here before, and some wear it all the time, some only when not in traffic, while some disagree with it completely...but there was this freak accident here last week that was really sad and something to think about regarding the value of being as aware of your surroundings as possible...

A 21-year-old girl was running alone on a path in a section of our city park system.  A 30-foot long tree branch cracked off of a tree, landed square on her head, broke her neck and killed her instantly.  The news report said that authorities believe she never heard the branch breaking b/c she was listening to her ipod/mp3 player.

My husband commented that if that is how you go (in such a freak accident like that), it was destiny and there is nothing you can do to stop it.  I can't help thinking, though, that a falling 30-foot tree branch has to make noise when it falls, and if she hadn't been listening to music, maybe she could have jumped out of the way.  So sad...

I have a Nike+ - so I wear mine on the run in one ear - unless I'm getting close to race day and then it gets left at home or I run with no earphones - just to collect data.

For the first while on the bike when I was doing 2+ hour rides by myself I would listen to "Car Talk" in my right ear - so that I could still hear traffic behind me - it just kept me out there while I was still struggling with the distance.

I always wear it in both ears when I run on the dreadmill and if I want to do intervals on the trainer.  I hate the gym - so if I'm there to lift weights then I have it on as well.

I am a purist I guess and don't wear one ever when exercising. I did try it on the dreadmill once and it made that activity a little more tolerable.
I did a 30 mile ride with a guy this past weekend and he wore one but he must have had it down low because he was able to hear me when I talked to him and called out the cars coming up behind us when he was in the rear.

I have and H2O audio for my older ipod shuffle for the pool.
I run with either a ipod nano or the new shuffle (though those headphones hurt my ears).
If I am cycling on a path I'll listen to an audio book in my right ear and leave the other earbud out.

I just got the H2O Audio Interval phones for my iPod Shuffle and it absolutely, completely ROCKS. Swimming to some good music--and good-sounding music at that--is just what this swimming noob needed to stay motivated!

I used to listen while running, now I don't--guess I got all Zen about it and listen to my body now.

I'd never wear an iPod on the bike, though it's nice when doing a trainer ride.

I like songs to motivate me while "jogging"!  If I'm on a flat bike trail, I'll wear one, but when I'm on the roads, I never wear one.  Again, I like when a fast song comes on to motivate me to work a little harder.  I purposely skip to fast songs while jogging to get up hills!

guess i'm a jogger, i dont necessarily like running, so if my ipod keeps me from getting in my head and telling me to turn around stop or sit down then i'll run with it every time.  except for a race of course,  and i wear it on the bike but only on extremely long rides, 3 hours by myself in nowhere kansas on a perfectly flat stretch is a bit too much for my a.d.d. to handle

Never EVER ever

I enjoy:

The sound of heavy breathing of a runner I've just passed
The Sound of silence of a runner making the pass on me
The sound of loose rock under my foot as my pace whips up
The pounding of my heart about to explode out my chest
But most of all - I just enjoy running and don't want it ruined with music

I have one but I only seem to use it on the treadmill, so basically never.  I prefer to be able to hear around me when I run and bike.  A girlfriend of mine was stalked during a run and didn't realize it at first because she was wearing her Ipod.  Fortunately the guy didn't do anything and she's fine but it's still creepy.

I do while running on a treadmill.  Once in a while I'll use it while running outside.  When I was into lifting heavily, I would always wear one.

I never use one on the bike.  On the trainer I usually watch TV or blast my stereo.

A few weeks ago I was running and I heard a faint jingling noise behind me. When I looked I saw a pit bull trailing me about 50 feet behind and closing. I was able to cross the road and he started to follow but some cars came and he turned back. I would never have heard him if I was wearing an IPod.

Bah, that's crap. I ran x-country for 7ish years, and I wear an iPod when running.
