Just curious if there are any shows on that that don't have tons of violence, inappropriate language etc that you can watch with your kids.

I remember growing up everyone piling around the TV to watch the Cosby show.  I don't watch much tv b/c I hate violence- so maybe I'm missing some- but is there anything we can watch as a family with a younger child?

Thanks!

We'll DVR and then sit together as a family to watch:

iCarly
Mythbusters
Planet Earth
River Monsters
(In fact, many shows on the Discovery Channel are great!)
Who Wants to be a Millionaire (see how surprisingly smart your kids are!)
Modern Family (need to screen it first)
Spongebob (certainly fails the violence criteria though)
The Walking Dead............  JUST KIDDING!!!

America's Funniest Home Videos    This is a Disney produced show and is pretty safe. My 21/2 year and 6 year old watch it.

Cosby Show is in syndication if you have DVR.  It's great.

My 11 year old loves the Iron Chef and Next Iron Chef shows.  They tend to have a lot less (bleeped) language than things like Top Chef.

As goosedog mentioned, we've done a bunch of Cosby.  the old sitcoms are great...The Jeffersons, MASH...my oldest is partial to the Weather Channel shows.  My daughter enjoys Bizarre Foods...that Andrew Zimmer(man?) is just a natural entertainer.  Great show, great host.

We don't watch much tv at all...but I will say I thought Wipeout could have been the dumbest show I had ever seen...until one day we let the kids take a peek.  Once you see your kids belly-laughing, you appreciate the show a lot more.  (plus, there's eye candy for Dad)

oh, and don't let me forget the 3 Stooges!

Master Yoda once said..."Fear leads to anger...anger leads to hate...hate leads to suffering..."  but then again, he probably also taught yoga in a public school.  I aint listenin' to him!

There is the Food Network.  TV Land has syndicated reruns of The Cosby Show and some others  the schedule: http://www.tvland.com/tv-schedule

Otherwise, the major stations - ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox - really do suck big time at family-oriented Prime-Time shows.

I don't think hate alone is a violent term.  I hate rice pudding, but I don't think that's really going to cause any issues :-)

Thanks for all of the suggestions!  I wish the major networks had some better offerings- at least one night a week of family tv night.

Things that my 7 year old watches with me

Modern Family - a lot of it goes over her head

The Middle

Everybody Loves Raymond - her absolute favourite re-run show.

Wipe Out

We also watch a lot of UK BBC kids shows - I think they are pretty lame but she loves them, a kids game show called Trapped is her favourite.   It's ridiculous!

Cartoons - she loves Scooby Doo, Batman, Spongebob and one called Chowder.

I think they've been weeding out the questionable shows-- although the other day CN did show one where Tom rolled his own cigarette (with Jerry in the middle), to which my daughter said "yuck"!

Californication?

But seriously, slim pickings perhaps.  Big Bang theory seems pretty harmless.  but not many family shows out there OR, since I don't usually watch them, don't seek them out?

Once Upon A Time seems pretty family orientated.  Although there was one episode where some folks got turned into creepy puppets and that freaked my kids (girl 8, boy 11) out.

America's Got Talent (my kids love that show) and all the singing "reality" shows (X-Factor, The Voice etc.)

My kids also love Survivor.

The Middle was a great suggestion - there are tons of shows without "violence" (How I Met Your Mother, Happy Endings, The B in Apt 23, Parenthood, etc.) - but the themes are very "adult", which I'm assuming is the root of your question.

Whoever suggested America's Funniest Videos - really? That show is FULL of what I would categorize as violence. Unintentional, but it's still painful to watch. A heavy laugh-track does not make people getting smacked in the face/crotch, falling off trampolines or bikes, etc. "funny" to me. Same with Wipeout, but at least those people signed up for it.

Oh yeah if my kid knows the Voice etc is on then we have to watch it.   i don't tell her!

She's just happy to sit with me whatever.  She watches any triathlon coverage on TV especially if Macca's on.  She also watched the Olympics.

The other thing we'll watch together is Jamie Oliver cooking shows....

Little House on the Prairie Laughing No, really.

As far as stuff not in syndication ala Cosby we watch:

Modern Family

Say Yes to the Dress (3 girls)

Project Runway

Myth Busters

Wild Kratts on PBS - I am OK with just about anything on PBS and not ok with a lot of Disney channel.
