Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I was a rower in college...had to be up at 4:45 am...but now that I'm an adult and I don't have teammates as roommates to bang on my door in the morning to make sure I'm up, I cannot get out of bed at 5:30am for Masters swim practice. It's really problem now that I'm doing two-a-days four days a week, because I can't really double up workouts in the evening after work, so I generally just miss the swim all together. I've tried the moving my alarm clock across the room, I'm tried joining a team so that I would have someone expecting me in the morning...but I just still sleep through the alarm or turn it off without knowing it. I REALLY want to start getting up consistently (4 days a wk) for practice. Any ideas?????!?!?!? |

Also, a 5 Hr Energy on the nightstand gets me going in the morning too. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() that ain't an easy question to answer but I agree with the other posters that #1 you've got to get to bed early enough... the days that are tougher for me are usually the ones after getting to bed later than usual two-a-days four times a week is also a bit much without proper rest and recovery. Good luck!

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with going to bed earlier and getting enough sleep. I would also add that you need to pay attention to your diet in the late afternoon and evenings. I noticed that if I go to bed a little hungry it is easier to get up. Other early birds I know program their coffee pots to be done brewing when the alarm goes off. I don't drink coffee so I don't use this trick, but you may consider it if you are a coffee drinker. Member![]() ![]() | ![]() What worked for me was slowly starting earlyier every few days. If I could get up at 6 or 6:30 then I would try for minutes earlier for a week then 15 minutes earlier , etc |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() thanks guys! I am probably not doing so well on the sleeping...going to bed around 11-11:30. I know better than to stay up that late, but usually I get sucked into some task or getting ready for the next day. and, I really may have to order that runaway alarm clock...because setting my alarm clock on the other side of the room just doesn't do it for me! I have been draggin lately, so I'm also going in to see a nutritionist to see if that's the problem (I know I'm constantly dehydrated which is a problem too...) |

Cycling Guru ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alarm clock goes off, I turn it off, then the second one on the clock goes off about 10 minutes later and I drag my lazy azz out of bed. Done. |

![]() | ![]() It's a proven medical fact that if you exercise when you don't want to, you burn 100% more calories than if you hadn't worked-out. There, that's enough to get you up. But seriously, if you really want to get up, have someone meet you, better, have a group of 3. If one bails, the other two will give them carp. If you only have two, there's only one person to give carp and that doesn't work, you need 2 to team-up. I never miss my Monday, Weds, Thurs, or Sunday workouts for anything because I have people waiting to give me carp if I do...(unless I'm traveling for work, in which case, I have an excuse). |

I know better than to stay up that late, but usually I get sucked into some task or getting ready for the next day. You really need to try to go to bed two hours earlier. It does take a lot of planning. Something that helps is cooking my meals a few days out. That way, when I get home from an evening training session, I only have to pop dinner in the microwave...not having to cook and clean saves a lot of time. I also make sure laundry, grocery shopping, vacuuming, shopping, cleaning etc., is done on the weekends so that the amount of errands and tasks I have to do during the week is cut to a minimum. I also need to give myself a good 20-30 mins of laying in bed reading or watching TV in order to fall asleep with no problems when it is time for bed. Our days are busy, and that downtime really helps me. |

![]() I read someone's signature line on here. I can't remember who's but it says something like, "Go ahead princess, sleep in. Just one more person I will beat in the race." I do not know that person, but I picture someone I hate saying that, and it gets me moving in a hurry. |

Iron Donkey![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() At my age with kids, getting to bed early doesn't happen. Waking up, on the other hand, happens like clockwork due to good ol' body mechanics - the kidneys have their own timer. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My husband trains with me in the AM. He sets up the coffee pot to be done brewing coffee when we're supposed to get up, and he wakes my lazy azz up out of the bed with a nice cup of hot coffee. |

![]() | ![]() I am soooo not a morning person. But the only times/tactics that are proven to work with me is if I know someone will be picking me up at a certain time to go swim. Or if I have committed to picking them up at a certain time. I won't let someone sit outside my house honking or waiting for me - especially at 5 a.m. That is the ONLY thing that has gotten me out of bed for workouts. It's not just the accountability of meeting someone at the gym - that is too easy to blow off - but knowing they are outside your house waiting on you. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There have been many studies that back this up but you might want to check your bedtime against the 90 minute "Sleep Cycle" that most all of us have. Getting up at a time that is close to the beginning of a cycle will be easier to wake and you will feel more rested for the day. Assuming you fall asleep within 10 minutes or so then just back up from your wake-up time in 90 minute time frames and try to go to bed then. I used to do this when getting up at 4:30 when I had to go to work....and it really does make it easier to get up and feel rested. Several people in my family have tried it and all have seen good results in both being able to awaken easier but also be more energetic during the day. Steve |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() what about getting one of your masters teammates to call you? My workout buddy used to call me at 5:30 when he was on his way to the gym, and he kept talking until I was finally too awake to fall back asleep. at that point i'd give up and get my butt out of bed ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have similar problems. I've gotten a little better since I started this thread, but not much: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=165385&posts=61&start=1 The key for me is to be meeting someone. I won't miss that. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I battle sleep, I get by on about 5-6 hours of sleep a day. I sometimes wake up at 3am am lie in bed staring at the alarm clock. Biggest problem is not waking the wife up when I lie awake in bed. Never had that problem until I hit the big 40 a few years ago |
