Elite 2640 Ontario, Canada | Subject: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread Who else is planning on running this race? This will be my first half marathon and I'm really looking forward to it. I started Running Room's half marathon training program a few weeks ago and am up to LSD distance of 9km, although last week I did 10km for fun. |

Veteran 270 Burlington | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread It was my first last year and it was a blast. Perfect weather but March in Ontario could mean anything. I'll be back in 2011 as well. Another good race is the Oakville Mercedes 10K. Great race, prizes and really nice finishers medal |

Another good race is the Oakville Mercedes 10K. Great race, prizes and really nice finishers medal Does anyone know how they deal with ice on the ground in the event that it's present? That's my only area of concern in terms of unpredictable Ontario winter conditions. I imagine that the route would be heavily salted since it's such a big event. When is the Oakville Mercedes 10km? |

What other event lengths have you done? So far I have only completed a sprint tri and a 5km, with two more 5km races scheduled in the near future. |

Veteran 270 Burlington | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread Chilly 1/2 is run on Lakeshore Road, they close it for the morning. In the three years I've lived here I don't recall it ever being snow or ice covered. You can get Yak Trax which go over your shoe and provide traction on ice and snow and might be good for outdoor running over the winter anyway. I found having a couple of tris on my calendar this summer kept me really motivated so I need something on my winter calendar to keep me moving forward! I have done two halfs before, but they were 5 and 10 years ago respectively. Hoping to break 2 hours with this one. |

I have a 5km at the end of October and the end of December to make sure I keep motivated and running. In the mean time I'll be training to run the Chilly Half. |

(the angus glen-folk REALLY know how to throw a post-event party!!) keep it in mind if you're looking for a november event! |

I've just started competing in duathlon this year (and to keep it simple,, I suck at swimming so no triathlons anytime soon ). I did six duathlons and then I wanted to finish the year off with the Angus Glen half marathon and a couple 5k races but I injured my leg in the Cobourg duathlon in August and now two months later my leg is still bothering me. |

Extreme Veteran 479 | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread LOVE the name jon bovi (hilarious reference) & a FABULOUS band! my sympathies on the injury. i've been battling 2 nagging things since the end of august that haven't gone away. (but i'm only aiming for the 10k at angus glen-- not the 1/2 this time!!) mbasta-- sadly no luck at the bike show. it was MOBBED. & i found that the prices at the show were the same as they are in stores right now! (it just seemed to be an amalgamated bike sale as opposed to the "blow out" that they marketed it as) disappointing... but it did drive my search back online! & i may have met my match (but i'm not sure if it's love or lust....) a cervelo might be a bit unrealistic for me right now (not sure if i'd be able to handle a tri bike... but i'm SO excited to find out if i can!!) |

Regular 135 | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread Yak Traks work great...a little strange at first but gives you reassurance on snow and ice when it gets bad out and you have to get your run in. Highly recommended. My husband and I both wear them. |

I don't mind a little cushion for pacing mistakes. |

Master 1681 Rural Ontario | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread I just registered. This will be my 4th Chili so it should be no surprise that I really like this race. Its flat, nice friendly atmosphere, its close to home and the weather has co-operated most years (keeping fingers crossed). The corner of Brant and Lakeshore is a good place for family and friends to cheer - you'll pass that corner 3 times (0.3 km, 3.8km and 20.8km). Since its so early in the year, tis race has come to represent the start of running season for me. I never have set a PB or even a very good time on the race since I'm always a bit out of shape after winter but it always gets me pumped up to get running again. Cheers and happy training! |

Elite 2640 Ontario, Canada | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread Thanks for the advice on where to put family/friends. Since this is my first half marathon and the longest run I have done to date is 10km I am expecting to be a back of packer. Hopefully not DFL, but even that doesn't really bother me since I'm a new runner. |

Extreme Veteran 479 | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread I'm one of the jerks who's aiming for the spring Goodlife marathon.... Odd how they'd schedule Goodlife for the same weekend as Mississauga and then switch it a couple of years later to the first weekend in May.... (I'm sure there's some sort of reasoning behind that....?) |

Hopefully not DFL, but even that doesn't really bother me since I'm a new runner. There are walkers too, so you won't be last I really like the race too. I did it once in 2007. My only complaint when I did it was that the km markers were off so that the last 1.1 km was actually a mile. I was pacing myself to finish in 1:59:xx and ended up at 2:01:xx instead due to the f* up in the km markers. My advice if anyone is trying to get a goal time for this course is to give yourself a bit more of a cushion in case there is a problem like that again. |

Oakville is April 26th 2011 http://www.mercedesoakville10k.com/ I haven't ever done this race but several friends have and I do remember two years ago it was super cold!!! Somewhere in the -15 to -20 range, i don't remember snow though. And then other years it's not as bad. If you are doing it just keep an eye on the forecast closer to the day. Also, remember to sign up early because this race does sell out. It's also on my radar but I usually aim for Around the Bay, and if I do it again in 2011 it will be number 4 for me Edited by juniperjen 2010-10-27 3:04 PM |

9 | Subject: RE: Chilly Half Marathon : Official Thread After reading these posts, it's definitely getting me thinking about trying the chili half marathon. I just got into running a bit ago and did my first run (10k, Audi's best buddies), I still felt fairly energetic after wards, I'm thinking if I continue training a half-marathon will be possible...hopefully. Also, how do you guys continue running in the winter, on treadmills, or do you rough it outside? |

Rough it outside? To me roughing it is having to run on a treadmill. Gimme -15 over a treadmill any day of the week! |
