Subject: Vacation Help Needed Please
There are so many smart, amazing people on BT who have traveled (and live) all over the world... so I'm coming here to ask for vacation help.

A little background... we decided to go to Majorca (Mallorca), Spain. The trip will be in October 2013 (with tri racing schedules it has to be Oct or later). We were pretty set on the idea, since there are beaches, mountains to hike, and bike riding is a big deal there. Looked like the perfect vacation for us. Then I read that October is the rainiest month and the temperatures range from 55-75, with an average of 3 hours of sun a day. Doesn't really sound like the beach vacation I was hoping for. And we can't hike or ride bikes in the rain.

So I have been challenged with coming up with another idea... and thus I am asking all of you for ideas!

Here's a bit of information that might help:

* We have approximately $8,000 to spend for 2 people. We can leave on a Thurs and return the next Sat (9 days). That cost includes airfare, hotel, eating, etc. It is our entire budget!

* We want to go out of the country (live in Dallas, TX).

* Just going to a big city isn't going to cut it. Unless there is something amazing to see near/in the city. But we aren't the type of people who want to just lay around at a spa, shop and eat. Boring.

* An area that offers something outdoorsy to do would be nice. Hiking, biking, swimming, etc.

* A beach vacation would be great! But not mandatory. If it isn't a beach, then I want to be able to see something that is historical (a castle, ruins, etc.).

* A country with a lot of history or a really different culture would be nice, but we also need to be able to converse with them.

Now, we also looked at Japan, but we weren't sure what to DO in Japan. It was overwhelming so we scratched that idea. I'm still open to it, and have looked at the idea of a tour around Japan. But going on a tour seems so cheesy. Not sure how much I like that idea.

Which leads me to, does anyone know of any groups that do really nice tours of countries?

All right, hopefully I provided enough information, let the ideas fly! THANKS!

I haven't been to Majorca, but I spent 1 week on Ibiza.  LOVED IT!!! It was in May and the weather was already hot.  Not Texas HOT but in the high 80's.  I never thought they received that much rain in the Balearic islands.  I'd do a little more research.

On to Plan B, I liked Costa Rica.  If you don't mind driving, you can find lots to do.  I stayed in Tamarindo, more of a surf/beach town.  But within a couple hours, you can be in the rain forest, or volcano tour, or the historical sights.  Spanish is the native tongue, but it's super easy to communicate in English.

I don't have anything positive to say about Japan.  Went there three times in the Marines. SUPER EXPENSIVE, not real easy to communicate, and October would be COLD.

Bermuda? nice, luxurious resorts, lots of outdoors to do. 9 days would be probably too much time; id imagine 4-5 would suffice there to se and do the island.

I have been to Ibiza. Went there to see DJ's I love, about 9 years ago. It was fun getting to be around the music I love for a week. Oddly, I have a friend who lives there now, who would probably show us around. But if we do Ibiza, we are going to Majorca.

I have been to Costa Rica, about 15 years ago. Amazing! I loved it! Swore I'd go back some day. I might be considered. Pretty sure Oct is the rainy month there. I went in Oct before and it did rain, but it wasn't too bad.

I'm looking at tours of Japan. Not sure if I'm into the whole "tour bus with 30 other people" thing, but you are able to see a lot of the country in a relatively short amount of time. Of course, that also means you aren't really getting a lot of rest and relaxation.

Could be a consideration. I've been to Mexico tons of times, and Grand Caymen. Haven't done Bermuda. But I was thinking something a bit more... culturally diverse for this vacation.

Hhhuummmm...

Belize might be one to consider. Southern Italy too. I would need to do some research on Italy.

How about Thailand?

My wife & I went there a couple of years ago and loved it. Went to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand (hills/mountains, plenty of outdoor activities, temples galore) & Krabi in the south (spectacular beaches & scenery). And everyone should experience Bangkok at least once!

Nicaragua?  San Juan del Sur is a quiet beach town, there are mountains for hiking up to the giant Jesus, it's close to Lake Nicaragua with a volcano right in the middle of it.  Biking would be leisurely as the roads are terrible...

Also, I'll second Italy.  Tons to do...spend a few days in Rome, a few on the coast, and a few biking?

Not out of the country for you but what about Hawaii? (Go during IMWC!) Have you been there?  We went in earlier October.   We did it as a longer trip but did the Big Island and Kauai.  Both had interesting and outdoorsy things to do, great weather, as well as some interesting cultural sites. You can do beach - obviously.  But i also liked that the accommodations are quite varied - hotels, condo rentals, resorts - really your choice.

I just got back from Belize - it was FANTASTIC. Beaches, ruins, caving, all sorts of fun and adventurous stuff to do. We did a week of diving&snorkeling on an island then hit the mainland for a few days.

Italy might be a good option. There are organized Bike tours of Tuscany (wine and bikes!), or you can rent a car and enjoy the drive. Southern Italy has beaches so you could combine the 2. Great history, culture, food and English is spoken in most big cities.

There are organized wine/bike tours in France (Bordeaux/Burgundy) also.

Not to hijack, but I think Belize is on my list for 2014. I would be interested in hearing more about where you stayed and any specific tours, operators you worked with. Thanks.

How about Ecuador?   Easy to get to from Dallas -- quite cheap -- and lots of outdoorsy stuff to do (hiking, mountain biking, etc.)    Plus, you can spend part of the time in the Galapagos if you like animals -- fantastic experience.

South of France - you have Medieval architecture and history in places such as Avignon ( old Papal palace), walled city etc, Roman sites like the Pont Du Gard from 50BC, gladiator arenas and other historic places around Arles.Nice etc...a great Medieval castle at Beaux De Provence. That should cover the historic side - the riding would be awesome - vinyards, rolling hills etc...hiking to i suspect.

Then you are 45 mins from the beach if you want to spend time there - not to mention it has all the culinary delights you would wish for and as many quaint historic villages you an handle...

Fly to Avignon and drive from there...we stayed 2 weeks.....plenty of great VBRO places run by Ex-pats

We have traveled Europe extensively and this is our favorite place

We have been to Spain - Costa Del Sol is fine but a little commercialized and less historic

The airfare is high, but the cost/day for traveling, eating and accommodations is very cheap, as long as you don't want/need 4-5 star accommodations.

Thailand

Indonesia

Vietnam--Hot Runner, where are you? hmm, maybe sleeping.

Zanzibar

Lots of beaches at each.

My SO and I are planning a late September/October trip to Japan! We're thinking 3 weeks and going on a bike tour similar to our bike tour around France year. My blog post is here. We haven't actually decided exactly where in Japan we will go, but Okinawa is a strong possibility.

Hot Runner is awake now!  You're always welcome to visit (and even stay with me, if you like kitties!) but October isn't the best time weather-wise. It's still rainy season, though not quite as obnoxiously humid as "summer". You can expect pretty much a daily thunderstorm followed by a few hours of showers, usually late afternoon or evening. Things dry out a bit in November but don't expect dry days or anything remotely "cool" until late Nov. or early December. Central Vietnam (Danang, Hue, Hoi An) is much worse, with erratic weather and typhoons. Worst time for the beach. The north should be good, though. My mom and I did a cool bike tour a few years ago from Sapa to Dien Bien Phu in the north....in July. Definitely easier at a drier time.

Actually, when I saw October, I immediately thought Himalayas. Late fall's the best time for trekking--not too cold yet, higher passes still open, rainy season over. It's a great frustration of mine that my job keeps me from trekking at that time. Nine days is a little short, but if you did a shorter trek that doesn't go super high, you should be okay. Nepal is cheap with loads of treks and some MTB tours. Bhutan may put you over budget but the fee there is set...no surprises, and very worth it. Tibet itself is kind of a pain in the butt with complicated permits and restrictions that change without notice, plus a somewhat diluted culture, but there are neighboring areas of China (Yunnan, Sichuan) that have excellent trekking. A good resource for the latter is Wild China, or the locally based and Tibetan-run Khampa Caravans, in Zhondgian ("Shangri-La") in Yunnan Province.

Finally, my favorite spot in Europe, Bolzano and surrounding areas in northern Italy. You can't go wrong there. Nice small city; amazing hiking ranging from day hikes thru gentle hills to brutal multi-day treks with via ferrata, endless miles of bike trails and quiet roads, amazing food and wine. For biking, you can just ask at the train station or one of the Sportler outlets and they can provide maps. You can rent city cruisers, MTB's, and roadies. On our last visit, we liberated the free city bikes and rode them to Verona, then took them back on the train. In my next life, I plan to be a resident.

Happy trip planning!
