I did this race this year.  Considering it again for 2010.  It was a great course.  Rolling bike course, pancake flat run course.  The only downside for me was the long trek to transition before/after the race.  I know they had busses, but even that was organized chaos.  The down river swim sure is nice though!

Augusta is agreat course. I plan to be back this year. I left a little time on the run that I want back. The swim is a PR course all the way. I think everyone swam faster than planned.

I went down a few weeks before this years race to scoped out the course and actually rode the course and really enjoyed it. Since the swim is my achilles heel, I think that the river swim will help. I'm getting pumped!!

Hi all!  I'm considering, seriously considering, doing this race next summer.

I'm looking for a little insight as to the ameneties of the Augusta area.  I can shack up with my sister in Atlanta and make the drive in race day, but I was wondering what the hotel situation and proximity of the race site to the hotels if I were to stay in Augusta.

Please post your ideas or experiences managing race weekend and your travel tips.

Most likely you will need to get a hotel in Augusta.  Bike check in is on Sat- you have to check your bike the day before the race so that makes driving in the morning of a little difficult.  Also, the drive from Atlanta can be anywhere from 2-2.5 hours, depending on construction.  I wouldn't recommend doing this.

If the swim is your Achilles heel, you're going to be in love with Augusta. I did the race last year and the swim was unbelievably fast with the current and wetsuits. I just kept smiling, and felt like I was cheating.  They managed to space the waves out in a reasonable manner too, so I only got kicked in the face once or twice : ) The bike and the run are fast as well, although be prepared for a few hills on the bike (it's not as pancake flat as you might be led to believe). A lot of the downhill sections are cut short with turns and stops.  But best of luck with your training!

Good news. Once I get back to the bank I believe I'll be fine. Good luck with your training this year also.

I'm still undecided about doing it 2010.  I'll be doing IMCOZ in November and don't know if this would be a good practice to nail down nutrition, pacing, etc. It is hard not to do it when it is in my backyard!

The wife and I are back for antoher round. Got my NEW ride so looking forward to taking some time off the bike. If I can squeeze a few mins off the run also, i'd like to go somewhere around 5:15.
The Marriott is your best bet for Hotel options, makes everything stupid easy. $135 a night?
Happy Holidays to everyone and best of luck keeping the lbs off this off-season. (im up 6lb over Augusta already, waa)
Heres a pic of the NEW Rocket.

I'm in again this coming year.  I decided to use Augusta as a check for nutrition and pacing for IMCOZ.

I'm debating on whether or not I should register based on my current training. How fast did this fill up last year?

I believed it filled up in June last year but they allowed 3000 registrations and I believe this year they have limited it to 2500, but we know that can always change!

There are rumors of alligator issues in the river?  Any of this true?

No need to worry.  I can't count the number of times I swam the course and no sign of any alligator.  There is plenty of food in the river so there are no starving alligators that I think would be desparate enough to go after a human.  Come race day there will be so much activities in the water any that might be there will be gone.  Heck I would go swimming in it right now if anyone wants to go
