Pre-race routine:

Got the coffee and the kids and headed for Dunkin Donuts (their bribe for getting them up early). 70-mile drive in the pouring rain to get there, then set the kids up and had barely 10 minutes to stretch and warmup.
Event warmup:

MAYBE 1 minute of swimming before they called everyone out of the water for the starat.
Swim
  • 43m 10s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

Just don't get it. I bust my butt training and still can't go any faster than 2-min/100 yd swim. I'm so frustrated right now I could scream (just be glad you're not here to hear it!)

Since I was part of a relay, I had to run all the way to the transition to my partner's bike...the run to transition was about 1/3 mile long! Ran hard barefoot for just over 2 minutes. At least I was able to catch a few people on the run to transition!
What would you do differently?:

I have no idea. Any suggestions (within reason) would be welcome.
Post race
Warm down:

Did a lot of walking and a lot of cheering for others.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm a pitiful swimmer.

Event comments:

Poor race eval is due to my mood at my lousy performance.

Course: Two loops of a "L"-shaped course. Got out of water at halfway mark and backin. Very strange thing happened right at the beginning though. This was in a lake, at an area that was roped off for general recreational swimming/playing at the beach type stuff. Someone from the park was supposed to come take down the lines but never did. The race director announced that if we waited for them to take the lines down, it'd be another 15-20 minutes. So he started the race anyway and told everyone to either duck below or above the lane line! VERY strange.

Hey Sharon.....you are never happy with your races....The funniest was when you fussed over a 53 second transition...I mean how fast can you go?  I have trouble pacing myself in open water too...and swimming over people.  Just think of it as a warm up for Maui.  Take care and hope the kids behaved themselves -SMO

Glad I wasn't there or you might have unleashed all that hostility on me! I can't believe you drove 70 miles in the RAIN to get there. At least you were going to get wet in the swim anyways. I'm proud of you, despite your opinion!! Let's go biking soon.

HEYYY!!  I know exactly which race you're talking about and I wasn't "fussing".  Just answering the part that asks what prevented me from going faster.  If I recall correctly, I was thrilled with that race.

However, now that final results are finally in, I was able to compare my time in this race and my previous race with someone else (who won the other race, BTW) and saw that in the previous race, an oly, our times were only seconds apart...today, in the 1/2 IM distance, I was 9  minutes faster than her.  FWIW, at least that made me feel better.  Besides that, I'm cool now so things are in much better perspective.

Also, the kids and I went to the zoo after my part of the race was done (it's called Iron Ape because it takes place right near the Miami Metrozoo and the run actually goes thru the zoo).  I was tempted to just drop them off since they felt so at home (LOL) but we had a great time.  I even got to see some of the run and cheer on the folks in the process.

Sharon

Great swim Sharon!  Still think your St. Anthony's swim was faster.   j/k

Sometimes I really wonder how well they can measure distances on the swim course.  Was it really 1/2 IM distance or was it longer???
