Subject: RE: Hearing implant in 3 year oldOriginally posted by BrianRunsPhilly There is a big negative feeling about cochlear implants among older deaf people. My in-laws are a deaf and profoundly hearing-impaired couple, and they see this as the end of their social structure and community. That being deaf is 'wrong' and hearing people are trying to make them change. Kind of interesting and while I disagree I see their perspective. Their generation was segregated, sent to special schools, and once sent out into the hearing world they built their own deaf clubs, organizations, etc. to support themselves and build a strong social network. I see exactly where you are coming from, or rather they are. The only real response that I have, or that I think anybody would have is that times change. I'm sure that your in-laws have seen this themselves over the years. I would think if I had the choice to hear or not to hear, I would choose hearing. However I have never been deaf so I don't know what it's like to not hear. I can also imagine that this could be a shock to some people if they got this implant later in life. Sensory overload? I could see it be overwhelming. |
