Expert  1170    Southern Pines, NC |  Subject: Any patient swimmers up for Sandy Point this weekend?So i have a chance to do a little OWS this weekend, and I was wondering if there's anyone out there with a little experience and a lot of patience to help mentor my sorry butt in open water. I'm building my fitness etc etc. but haven't done much OWS at all. Is anyone in a gracious, teaching kinda mood this weekend? |

Registered for my first tri in September, but I did a 3 mile open water swim at the beginning of May. It did NOT go as well as I would have expected (even being realistic) based on the training I've done in the pool. I want to get more open water time in before the September Tri. But for scheduling purposes June 13th, June 27th or July 18th I would be w/in about 3 hours. Which is actually closer than I would normally be. Is there anywhere else around to open water swim? Any place closer? How cold is it? Would I need a wet suit? (I rented for the Naticoke Rive a couple of weeks ago, and don't own one). How do you guage the distance? Any info would be great! Maybe I should post the questions in the MD thread as stand alone questions instead of targeting you specifically. |

My regular roadie ride is out Baltimore National Pike (MD-40) from Frederick to Greenbrier Park.... the lake there is good for swimming if they have it open... Expert 1170 Southern Pines, NC | Subject: RE: Any patient swimmers up for Sandy Point this weekend? You all missed out! Beautiful morning today... Water temp was about 65, air temp in the 70s. We did a nice little swim around the swim area buoys. Our rough math put it at about 900 yards. It was nice and chill, and SCamp07 and I took some breaks at the buoys, talked about sighting, etc. It was good times. We're both doing Cascade Lake next weekend but it might be fun to get a regular BT swim going on the weekends... |

She is a good swimmer in the pool, but she did a swim clinic yesterday at Lake Audubon and said she totally freaked out. Does the park have a decent area for people to 'really' swim, that isn't overrun with small children and only goes waist deep? There aren't a lot of areas in NoVA that allow for OWS. |

Yes there is a big area for people to swim away from kids. The water depth is variable, but you can get away from the shore a bit and usually touch bottom. Every day is different at Sandy Point...there can be strong currents and moderate sized waves and boat/ship wakes. The water is a bit salty and occasionally visibility/clarity isn't very good. And in the bay, you never know what kind of flotsam/jetsam you may run into. |

Yeah, it's a good spot for swimming. The swim area buoys are nice because they're fairly far off the beach (75m) which keeps them kid-free, but at most of them you can just stand on the bottom to take a break. Yesterday was kinda windy so there was a little bit of chop, but nothing bad. It's just enough that you get used to swimming in it without a lot of anxiety. SCamp07 and I learned that horseshoe crabs like to mate on the beach in the early morning... those ugly bastards hurt when you step on 'em.  Edited by DrPete 2009-05-24 9:03 AM |
