Subject: An open letter to Ann Coulter

This is a response by a Special Olympics rep to a tweet Ann Coulter made after the presedential debate on Monday.

She tweeted: "I highly approve of Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the retard."

I thought it was a beautifully written response and I want to share it:

That really is beautifully written.  I hope she read it and lets it really sink in.  I will never understand why people continue to use that word in that manner.  It says so much more about the person who uses it than anything else.

It shouldn't.  The people that believe in these politicians and political entertainers are drones.  Both sides.

I hadn't heard about this until this thread and to hear people are defending her use of the r-word is just so disheartening.  Words have power and it is a shame that people is a position to really make a difference do not make better use of that power.

That can't be defended.  I watched Bill Maher last night and heard him refer to a Congressman as a douche bag....and another as an azzhole, or something similar.  While I understand that even those comments aren't on par with Coulter's stupidity, I've had enough of all of these people.  They are nothing but hacks and punks, all of them....Coulter, Maher, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, and on and on...part of putting things back together should start with getting rid of these idiots who don't do any good for either side of the aisle....or anywhere else.

I feel the use of the word is wrong.  But I also hate how we have turned it into the "r-word" just like the "n-word" or the "f-word" or the "q-word" (made that one up).

Using it in a derogatory way towards someone is one thing.  But making them "words that shall not be named" is silly.

Because it puts her name in the spotlight.

Ignore her; her comment warrants no more response than your run-of-the-mill internet troll.

The new reality TV show Political Pundit Cage Match!!.  We can start with Rachel Madcow and Hannity then Limbaugh and Oberman are next, we will just keep going till there are none left!

And he was taken to town on that comment also.  If we just keep moving along and not holding people accountable for what they say, nothing changes.

I disagree.  I think she'll probably do her "mea culpa" and "apologize" for the use of the hurtful word (the apology will be one of these shallow "I'm only apologizing because you made me do so").

If she actually does do the special olympics thing and starts participating in activities for the "intellectually challenged" (is that what we're supposed to call it?), then she'll gain some mad props.

Did Obama get a similar letter when he said he "bowled like he belonged in the special olympics"?  I would think it's the same thing.  Or is it just if you use a particular word you're bad.

If that's the case, then you could make all kinds of racist jokes as long as you don't use a word to describe them.

Obama apolgized to the Special Olympics Chairman for the remark before it even aired. So, no, it wasn't after being taken to task.

I do recall that Sarah Palin was OUTRAGED by the President's comments. Funny, I haven't heard anything from her about Coulter.

Oh, please.

As mentioned before, it is amazing to me how people politely fall in line with their preferred politicians.

But my point is....it happens. I am, by no means, defending Coulter. I may "root for the same team", but there are jack-wagons amongst every affiliation.

Was it wrong....yes. Was BO wrong...yes. But at the end of the day, ya just gotta move on.

So technically, all she has to do is call the director of the Special Olympics and apologize? Is that the answer?

What's depressing is that folks like her (and Mike Savage, etc.) are just actors...they may not even believe in what they are saying, but it gets them air time and keeps them in the limelight.  While I was no big fan of his radio show, Al Franken summed it up best a few years ago (referring to Ann Coulter):

"I feel sorry for her that that's how low she has to go to be in the entertainment business."
