So I'll kick us off with a question about lodging. I saw the link on the IMAZ site to the Tempe visitors bureau and all of the local hotels. Do most athletes just stay in hotels or are there any local house/cottage rentals available in the area? I'm going to have a big crew in tow since this is my first IM (husband, parents, most likely two sets of aunts and uncles and maybe my two siblings) so having somewhere with a kitchen and living room would be ideal.

Anyone who has done the race before have any recs?

I would recommend looking at options at vrbo.com. I have used the site in the past to book stays at IMFL, and at Galveston for the 70.3.

I've used vrbo.com too and would recommend them as well.

vrbo..a whole bunch IMAZers  stayed at Dorsey Place condos on University ave..fairly reasonable ..I think some have 3bdroms..its a 1.5mile walk to transition area (although you can drive) also about a mile to view the run or bike segment on Rio Salado (town lake run path is off Rural and Rio S. Some of the rooms had traffic noise from the street..if that bothers you, ask for a unit  that doesn't face University ave. I didn't have that  problem in the unit I  stayed in. I will tell you the view is not beautiful..Tempe is a college town in the middle of the desert..really not too much to look at.....units have washer and dryer..and there is a heated pool.

If anyone owns a timeshare or has RCI points, we stayed at Legacy Golf Resort.  10 minutes from the airport and 10-12 minutes from Tempe Town Park.  Nice pool and hot tubs and every unit has a full kitchen, w/d, and jacuzzi.

I'm in & can't wait. This will be my 1st IMAZ. Regarding lodging, I'm staying at the host hotel. More expensive, but more convenient & enhances the experience IMO.

Looks like the host hotel is sold out. I'm sure there will be openings later, but does anyone know of something in close proximity? I'm not a fan of having to drive during an Ironman weekend.

Quality Inn at ASU had rooms as of yesterday. I may end up renting a condo, but this one allows me to cancel up to the day before arrival, so I booked.  It's maybe 1.5-2miles from the finish line, and it's not a far walk from the bike and run courses.

I stayed at the Tempe/Phoenix Airport Hyatt Place on Rio Salado. Its about a mile to a mile and a half from transition and you can walk or ride the path along Salt River Bed/Tempe Town Lake to get there. They also have awesome shuttle service to where ever you want to go. This includes race morning and post race until 11 o'clock. 169 per night I think. Would recommend.

I'm so bummed to hear the hotels are over a mile from the start/finish! I've been so spoiled with IMWI and IMLP where I was just a couple blocks away. I am also leaning toward condo but figured I'd see what hotel options were available. For those who scored host hotel rooms, how much were they.. just curious?

Thanks for posting all this information.  This is my first IM and I am stoked.  My brother and I are doing it together, so we will have lots of family and friends with us.

I'm ready to go. I started working with a coach about 5 weeks ago and it's all about the base training. Slow, slower and slowest...everything in HR zone 1 (and it's HARD to hold back the excitement but I keep things in perspective...it's still a year away!!). Staying with some friends that live in Chandler (I think that's close).

IMAZ is going to be a blast for everyone.  It will be my 1st IM, and to do it in my backyard is even more fulfilling.

For those traveling in, The Fiesta Inn and Marriott Buttes are both to the Southwest of Tempe Town Lake.  Most people seem to go Northeast, so you may find availability the other direction.  The Buttes is a nice place.  Fiesta Inn is older, but a tad bit closer.  Both are 1-1.5 miles from transition.

Good luck to everyone's training - planning a year in advance and training now for an event so far away is already a bit frustrating.  I hope I am not the only one who spends too much time building calendars, then checking, revising, re-checking, re-revising, and printing over and over and over again.  If I train the same amount of time I work on mapping the calendar, I should qualify for Kona!!!

Hey Kristin, I'm not at the host but about 2 blocks away at the Marriott, Residence Inn on Ash. I stayed at the Comfort Inn on 52nd when I volunteered this year and it was super easy to get to and from there (about a 5-7 minute drive to race start), and they had a shuttle taking over athletes starting at 4am race morning and bringing them back. The rate was $99.00 per night.

For those looking at hotels. I chose the Best western of Tempe. Its right off Scottsdale rd and along the run course. I needed it for my wife and mom who both have trouble getting around. Now they have a room about 500 feet from the run. I also went to the hotels website and got a better deal. The Ironman site was trying to give me a rate of 109.00 or 119.00 a night. I booked their internet 3 night special for 103.00 a night. The easy part is now over. Now onto the training.

I'm in for 2011!

Looking forward to discussing training and other things.

About the hotels,  I'm not overly concerned.  It seems to be a very accessible IM and when I volunteered this year I stayed 30 miles away and had no problem getting there and parked.

I know we are still way out, but I'm curious what others are doing right now. All of my workouts are Z1, low Z2 workouts to build base endurance. Right now it's about getting use to the frenquency (9 workouts a week right now), not the duration. 2 of my workouts are tri specific weight traning. I'm working with a coach, which I personally love. Having the ability to change things up based on my weak areas is perfect. Happy training to all.
