Subject: Wetsuit Legal?

I know the rules are based on water temp....But are wet suits allowed at most MN races?

I'm asking because I'm thinking of purchasing one this winter for next season.  Most of my races will be in late June-August.  I don't really want to spend the money if I'm only going to use it for a race or two.

This year Mid-July I did the Chaska Tri and it was wet suit legal.

I'm thinking of sleveless?  I really just want the added bouyancy provided in the legs.

Any thoughts/Comment appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi there,

The vast majority of races in MN are wetsuit legal, yes. In the 27 races I've done over the last five summers, I've only had two that were not wetsuit legal.

I have a sleeveless wetsuit and it's been fine for me. The very first race I ever did back in 2004 was in 61 degree water and that was a little brisk with a sleeveless, but that is the only time it's ever been an issue for me. All other times it's been perfectly fine. It's pretty much a personal preference issue, really. Some people prefer the additional warmth and buoyancy of full sleeves, while others prefer the unrestricted arms/shoulders of sleeveless.

That sums it up well.

I've raced three seasons and never had a race with a lake swim that wasn't wetsuit legal.

I mostly agree with Kelly.  I have been doing tris for 8 years and have never done a race in MN that wasn't wetsuit legal.  I have done races in other states that were too warm though (IA, TN & FL).  My wetsuit has sleeves and I would buy a wetsuit with sleeves again if I had to do it over.  Overheating hasn't been a problem at any distance.  I have gotten a little warm in a few races and just pull a little on the neck and some nice cool water rushes in and I'm fine.

To add to that, many later races around here are not USAT sanctioned.  So while they might be a bit warm for wet suits, they are not strict about it.

The one race where it's frequently hot, and no wet suits are allowed (or it's really close) is Lifetime.  If you're planning that, you may not be able to wear it.

I also wear, and find lots of value in, my sleeveless QR Ultrajohn.

I'm also under the impression that even if wetsuits are deemed a no go due to temps. You could still wear one, however, you just wouldn't be eligible for any awards.

I'm not worried about being "eligiable" for awards just yet LOL....

I've got a Loooong way to go before that'll be a factor.
