Subject: I NEVER thought this day would come!

Finally, eleven-and-a-half months after getting off the couch, I ran my first mile today without any walking!

It was *very* hard and not at all pretty, LOL, but I did it.  (Good thing the track was empty, too, or I might not have had the guts.)  Anyway, I was determined not to let a whole year pass before I got past this (literal) milestone, and did it in just in time!

It's a little bittersweet, I confess, since I had hoped to reach this point a long time ago.  Maybe if I had pushed myself a bit more, I could've done it sooner. (I do have to watch overdoing it, though, since I have type 2 diabetes and a big problem for me is getting low blood sugar while exercising.)  But I'll take this victory all the same!

Anyway, it's a cruddy, rainy, cold day in Southern California, but I feel great!  And I wanted to share my accomplishment with all of you here on BT, since this site is a huge reason why I've been able to stick with the training.  So thank you!  And hopefully, there are some of you out there struggling just like I was (and still am), and this can help to inspire you to keep at it, because you WILL get there!

Dood, all the hardships just make this milestone thatmuch more important! And I could think of no better weather to finish your first mile in. Think it, your out there busting your butt in the cold rain...no on else is out there, they are all warm and snuggly. Did they set a new PR today? Did they hit a new milestone???? H3LL no they didn't! Know why?? Cause they were to wussy to put in the effert you did! TODAY WAS YOUR DAY AND NO ONE ELSE'S!!!!

WAR KRLUDIG!!!

Congratulations!!! That's AWESOME! I love your quote about the track being empty...I'm the opposite. As much as I hate people seeing how slowly I run (esp on a college campus, where chances are pretttty good I'll see someone I know), I find it a huge motivation to keep going!

That's a terrific accomplishment!  I remember feeling like Rocky going up the Philadelphia Art Museum steps the first time I ran 2 miles (at 15 minute/mile pace!) Be proud!

Thats wonderful! I remember when I stopped smoking and finally got up the courage to start running. The first mile was SUCH a big deal and my goal was to be able to eventually run 2 without stopping.....

I never even thought I would be registering for triathlons. Congrats on your first of many milestones this year

Thanks, everyone!  Yep, next running goal is 2 miles of course, and then a full 5k, a 10k, a half, etc. etc.  I don't plan on stopping anytime soon!  But my next big goal is to do my first tri, a sprint distance, at the start of May.  And the run has been my biggest limiter so far, so it's satisfying to make progress finally.

Well, to celebrate, I just had a great Indian dinner, and now I'm going to install new Speedplay pedals on my bike!

Ya know, when I started running a couple of years ago I couldn't run 1/4 mile without stopping for air!  I didn't think I would ever be able to run a mile let alone the 4 mile race that I was suposed to be training for.  I ran that whole race but with knee braces on.  I didn't want to spend the rest of my active life wearing those braces.  It wasn't until about a year ago that I could run with out them!!!  I'm not a fast runner (never will be) but now I run with out jumper straps or walking (unless I haven't run in a VERY long time).

Congrats to you on reaching your milestone!  What is your next goal?

Great job!  It's great in you accomplishing your goal, but also in setting goals for yourself and striving to reach them within your expectations. This is just the start!!!
