Craig seems to be a little smarter/smoother  than Al.  Al would always ask the naive questions.   But he was sorta funny....

I wonder why the switch

I think Trautwig is prepping for the Olympics with NBC.

I liked Trautwig better.  Craig reminds me of a used car salesman.

That was my first reaction yesterday when they came on the air.

At least Trautwig knew how to pronounce the names of the riders.  Craig Hummer mis-stated a few of the names in the pre-race coverage this morning and I was grinding my teeth.  It's especially bad after you hear Phil or Paul state the name about 30 seconds earlier.

I miss Al

At first I thought maybe he just got tired of Bob Roll but then I remembered that he is also has a "Day Job" commentating for the Olympics and figured that there was just a timing conflict.

I hope he is back next year. Hummer is OK I supose but it is gonna take some time for him to get used to the job. (And for us to get used to him)

 My sentiments exactly!

I miss Al too. But will have to make due.

Hummer doesn't know what he is talking about. I have laughed at him making remarks/opinions about something dealing with a certain aspect of a stage and asking Bob or one of the other guy's opinions and they pretty much make Hummer look like an idiot.

I miss Al. He was extremely knowledgeable about the little details of the Tour.

It's tough to be the new guy on a team that's been together for several years, especially when the rest are relatively close in age and you're the "kid".   Hummer seems to be trying hard, so I give him some credit for that.

That being said, I think he needs to cut back on his caffeine a bit.

Bobke seems to be a bit more subdued this year than in the past - maybe he misses Al too.

Hummer comes off like a rookie who doesn't understand the magnitude of the sport he's calling. Bob Roll's nuttiness aside, the Tour broadcast is pretty reverential in tone, both in terms of the riders, the history, and even the setting, and he comes off like he's calling a Division II college basketball game.

Not sure...Al is on his way down in his career.  Hummer, on his way up.

I saw Al after a broadcast of his on MSG  on the Rangers in NY, saw him in the chi-chi whatever it's called club upstairs in Madison Square Garden after a Ranger game (I was a seaon ticket holder).  I sat down next to him, him sucking down a gin or scotch or something, draggin' on a smoke.  He was fine about a fan sitting down next to him, but he just seemed to be into his drink and his smoke and didn't seem to give a $hit about the game.

To play devil's advocate, maybe he didn't like chatting with a fan...fair enough.  But I sensed this was a j-o-b for him.  (In fact, he frankly told me he was an Islander's fan.)  I thought maybe he could have at least faked it since he was sitting in the velvet lined clouds of Ranger-land.

I'm not sure Al is a cycling fan.

On the flipside, I don't know that Craig is either.  One thing I'll stand by forever is that Phil and Paul are the best sports-casting duo EVER!  I adore them!  So:  voting a.m. TDF-cast vs. pm. TDF-cast, hands down...a.m. wins!

Yeah, ya know, tho, until I married a European, I didn't know how some of the sounds were pronounced over there either.  For instance, when you see a double O  as in "oo" in a dutch or belgian name, it's pronounced OH, not OOOOO.  And "J" is pronounced like a Y.  What American would know that?  So a name like Joost, you'd prob say JUICED, when infact it's pronounced YOST.

So, give the guy a break.  He doesn't have the experience yet that Paul and Phil have (20+ yrs on the international circuit.)  He'll learn soon.

Anyway, I find it kinda cute how even with his experience, Bobke still gets it all wrong!  Isn't that part of his charm, afterall?

Sure, Craig seems to try but he's kind of the Ryan Seacrest of the cycling world.......

Craig is an olive in a world martini.  C'mon, bro, learn it, or don't show.

And I'll be glad to step it up and claim that mantle. I can get most names right, I know cycling, and, well, I've got a solid british accent, I can do scotland on demand, and australia as well.  I've got range.....

I'm sure I'll get the names of the teams right as well.
