Member 50![]() ![]() | Subject: Race ShortsHi all, I am beginning to look for race shorts for my Oly in September and don't know that much about what to get. I've previewed:
I think I would like to get the padded shorts and wear them throughout the whole race. I did read that bike shorts take longer to dry and weigh a bit more compared to the tri shorts (padding thing). What do you guys wear and what would you recommend for this distance. Gear maker is also welcome so I can hunt it down in stores and online. I am also open to those that want to chime in on suits. I think I'll wear my UA Heat Gear top. Gracias!!!

Master 1993![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Riverside, IL | Subject: RE: Race ShortsTri shorts. They're comfortable, they dry quicker, and have less padding so it doesn't interfere with running but just enough for the bike...and most have at least 1 pocket to stash a gel or some other type of energy/nutrition. Wear them for all 3 legs of the race...no worries. Edited by nscrbug 2008-07-28 9:54 PM |

Expert 938![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Race ShortsTri shorts have a little padding but not much. The suit and the padding dry quickly. You can run, bike and swim in them. Not great for doing a lot of swimming in chlorine pools. for races fine, but long term in chlorine will wear them out. Bike shorts, thicker pad, pad stays wet. Can feel like a wet diaper and cause chafing on the run. Jammers. No padding, for the bike. Seams may or may not chaffe you during the run. After a couple of months they get so thin, they become see through. Ok to do your first tri in them, if you have done some training runs and rides in them to make sure they dont rub the man parts the wrong way while moving. 8 panel normally refers to the number of cloth panels sewn together to make tri or bike shorts. Standard are 6 panel or 8 panel, although other numbered panels are made. 8 panel are more expensive and advertised as being more comfortable. Some people notice no difference, others say 8 panel is better. You have to try them and decide for yourself. |

They are my new favorite tri shorts. Do the DeSoto low cuts have pockets in them? I saw them online and don't remmeber them being there. I too like the looks of the DeSoto low and the Peral Izumi. I think I am at the low end of the DeSoto sizing chart (36) for their XL range which is 36" to 41". Do they have some give to them even if you are not "mid-size"? I am with everyone on the tri shorts for sure now. I had a small doubt about the riding shorts (felt the big padding in the bike shorts in-store once, of which I liked, then knew they would slow me down) and now will avoid them chafing me as much as I'd like to feel like I am wearing diapers!!! Master 1517![]() ![]() Western MA near the VT & NH border on the CT river | Subject: RE: Race ShortsI just got a desoto one piece. Im 6'3 210#'s w/ a 38" waist and it fits me great. At first I thought it was snug and maybe too small. But w/ some pulling and 'adjusting' it fits fine. super light, super flexible and very breathable - has mesh on the sides, zipper in the front and a mesh pocket in the back. It also isnt difficult to take the "top" off if you want to go shirtless either. So far very happy. Bought it on ebay w/ 2 day shipping for $60. |

Elite 2423![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Race ShortsNo pockets in the De Soto or PI. Some of the shorts out there have half a dozen pockets, I try not to carry much and if I do I stick it in my jersey. It would be nice to have just one pocket. |

Elite 2527![]() ![]() ![]() Armpit of Ontario | Subject: RE: Race ShortsPockets are overrated IMO. If you just need to stash a couple of gels, tucking them inside your waistband or inside the bottom of your short, esp if your shorts have leg grippers, keeps them secure. That being said, I have a few Team Javelin Sugoi 1 and 2 pc tri suits that all have a couple of small pockets on the top portion. |

I love it because it doesn't matter what I wear on race day since I always have a place to put my gels. I've worn that race belts for marathons and I love it! Edited: I have had way too many gels fall out of my one piece tri suit pocket since it's on the side and not in the back. But I haven't lost any yet with my race belt number holder! Extreme Veteran 863![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() West Michigan | Subject: RE: Race ShortsI used my bike shorts only because my primary sport is mountain bike racing so I have plenty of bike shorts. I've only done 1 TRI thus far, but I didn't notice the padding causing any issues during the run. They are definitly heavier coming out of the water, but I just squeezed the pad as I exited. I thought I'd only be doing one TRI this year, but looks like 3 now. So I may venture out and look for some shorts. I just don't want to invest in too much TRI gear since MTB racing takes a lot of money as well. My first priority was a top that I could swim/Bike/Run in. Still working on that. Trying to put a shirt on after the swim was comical. |

Member 50![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Race ShortsYes I am in Arlington and stopped by Pacers in Clarendon today (yes they are stocking tri stuff now) to see what they have in regards to tri stuff. I saw the Zoot tri shorts and Jammers. They seemed nice. I also saw the Sugoi shorts there; mmmm they looked yummy. They had a meshy look, a padded bottom and two small side posckets attached to a $70 price tag. It did seem that the Sugoi shorts had a different tyoe of padding (non-chamois) and seemed as if they'd wear a little easier. Anyone with Sugoi padding experience. I did not try them on and will head to Conte's next. I need to get some gels there so I'll see the short types they have. (That's where I first saw the padded shorts I spoke of earlier). Harry |

Member 50![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Race ShortsFollow up to all. I got race shorts last week and used them twice so far. I like them and am very pleased for the price so far (comfort, fit, and style are what I was truly after). I found them on eBay, paid 23 (including shipping and a free running hat) and they have all but the gel pouches. If you guys are listening to this place the gel pouches in there!!! Here is their eBay link http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/aevero_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ. Cheers! Harry |

Extreme Veteran 378![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seattle | Subject: RE: Race ShortsGlad it worked out well for you. The aevero shorts are some of my favorites. One thing - the pad tends to bunch and come apart a little in the wash as per the advice card that comes in the box. It's better to wash them by hand (if you can be bothered!). The aevero guy Brent is great about reading and returning emails and ebay messages quickly - you should shoot him a note about the pouches! |

Yes, I have wshed them by hand after each use and did take the advice that ships with the goods. So far so good. Is regular soap okay with these, just water, or something else good fior the lifespan of any/these shorts? I've seen a "tech" detergent before, is that they way to go? I've also washed them in the shower, would other detergents besides soap work in there if soap is no good? Shoer and wash after workout seems mopst reliant for me. Harry

Extreme Veteran 378![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seattle | Subject: RE: Race ShortsSorry, I wish I could help with those questions but you sound like you know more than me. I haven't heard of a 'tech' detergent. Maybe someone else will answer. I just wash them in the sink using a little of the regular laundry detergent that I use to wash my clothes. So far so good for my second pair... With my first pair I was not as smart as you and ignored the advice and threw them in the machine. They are still definitely usable but the pad is not in great condition. Good luck. |

Member 50![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Race ShortsDainel, No worries. Maybe I'll have to test it out myself to find out! I did read the bottle and it seems there's detergent out there that might be "light" on certian chemicals found in detergents, but the jist of it was to "keep your tech clothes tech." I don't remmeber the price but it was not outrageous, and seemed liek a good product. Thena again, all my exercise gear has been laundry washed with no special care and I've not ticed any difference in the fabrics. Harry |
