Phelps' swimming style--odd?

Looked like he took longer to pull with his right arm than with his left. Did anyone else notice that? He sure was fast though. |

Yeah I noticed that too. Looked like he is doing some sort of "catch up" type stroke where both arms are in front of him at the same time (front quadrant swimming as it is called in TI). But it obviously works for him. He also seems to gain time on everyone with his push-off from the wall.

Yeah I noticed that too. Looked like he is doing some sort of "catch up" type stroke where both arms are in front of him at the same time (front quadrant swimming as it is called in TI). But it obviously works for him. He also seems to gain time on everyone with his push-off from the wall.
He talked about that in an interview - and how WEIGHT LIFTING did that for him. |

It was slowly trained out of me though, but I maintain I was faster and more effective breathing every 2/4 and almost catching up on every stroke. On the other hand, the mile was my best event... So maybe it was for the better I changed. With that kind of stroke, that Phelps has, you can make up for the loss of speed during the glide period (2 quick strokes then short glide, rinse, repeat) with a monstrous kick, which both him, and Ian Thorpe possessed. That's the great thing about swimming, you can see MUCH different techniques make it to the top. Not that this is the same thing, but many people also ruled out Tae Hwan Park as a real threat in distance swimming due to his size (5'11 as opposed to man-beast 6'5 Hackett). Ahhh... I love the Olympics |

I went tubing yesterday and my abs are killing me :p Well the first three or four triathlons that I do each yeah have indoor swims. And I have noticed that my larger then average legs tend to give me a little lead off the wall compared to other swimmers. |

It only took me about 10 seconds to realize that if I had 1/2 the talent, drive, etc. of these fabulous athletes I'd be in great shape. Then, & only then, would I be in a position to question their methods. Until that day, I'm playing Monkey See Monkey Do! And trying to learn as much as I can from the superb performances! I read an interview where he said they sat down after the last Olympics and analyzed what he needed to improve, and he cited that as an area. Kinda reminds me of Tiger Woods, at the top of his game, completely relearning his stroke in order to improve more. Now that's commitment! |

I think that's exactly what we're doing here. We're not questioning his methods but observing his style and learning about successful swimming form. Noting differences doesn't mean we're criticizing him in a negative way.

No wonder these guys can kick 100m in 1minute!!!! He seems to glide more on his none breathing stroke. |

New user![]() | ![]() Phelps is a freak of nature. He is 6ft 4 tall with a 3o inch inside leg thats the same as me and I am only 5ft 7. Arm span from tip to tip for a normal person is normally the same as their height his is 4 inchs longer than he is tall. I wish I was a freak |

Also read that Phelps beat the american record on his opening leg which was promptly destroyed by the fantastic final leg by Jason Lezak. Talking about a swim of ones life right there, he lost a tenth on the first 50 down to the French dude but destroyed everyone on the way back, and beat frenchy by 6 tenths, amazing! In the paper it said that he had a quick 5 second, can I or can't I type conversation with himself after the turn, basically it turned out to be a HTFU and do it! |

Australia's lead-off (Eamonn Sullivan) actually set a new WR in the race (47.24) taking 0.26 seconds off the old mark. My guess is both the AR & WR will only last until the 100m individual race takes place. |

I can only say 2 things: That is a simply amazing video, there is so much you can learn from it. Second, after 40 years I am quitting swimming.
