Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, venting here. Saturday, I went on a 14mile bike that I have done before. Pretty ride, it has a bunch of steep hills that will really get your heart pumping. The great thing about this route is that you can gain some awesome momentum going down a hill and then use it to climb the really steep hills. Enter Fido... As I was gaining momentum going down a fairly large hill, some d00d is walking his dog without a leash. The dog spots me and starts running at me. he's about 200 feet in front of me, so I HAVE to slam on my breaks. My back tire squealed on the road and the dog gets right in front of me. The guy yells at me, "You scared the heck out of me!", and it was implied that he was blaming me for almost running over his dog. I maneuver around the dog, which BTW is still barking and growling at me, and then look up at the HUGE mountain I will have to climb...with no momentum. The hill is at least 1/2 mile long and very steep. I climbed it really slow, and "cheated" by zigzagging in my lane... Anyways, I was a bit annoyed by this, and especially at the d00d for not even apologizing when it was clearly his fault, since his dog was not on a leash. I love dogs (i have 3), but even I know not to walk my dog on a 2 lane road without a leash! I could have been seriously hurt, the dog could have been seriously hurt, and that guy could be paying for medical bills that could number in the 1000s.... I almost turned around to b!tch at the guy, but figured I needed to just continue with my ride... Anyways, any similar experiences? what did you do? Happy Monday! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was doing a ride this weekend with Tri Take Me Away and we were getting chased by dogs left and right. One guy even stood in his doorway and watched as his dog ran into the street to chase us. My best "revenge" element was when a dog was chasing us, and coming really close to Jess's feet. I was a bit in front, so I took my water bottle and sprayed a stream from it which hit him square in the face. He stopped dead in his tracks and went running home. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I feel your pain. I had a similar scenerio this weekend but during a race. I was about 15 miles into a 23 mile bike leg when a spectator's little house dog ran out into the road right in front of me. I was in the process of passing a handful of riders heading downhill. ( i just happened to be carrying more momentum at the time) I locked my breaks and slid..plus my rear wheel began to slide out from under me but I managed to stay upright. Everyone was fortunate in this group that I didn't hit the dog! I did yell out to "get out of the road" but kept on going. It scared me and reminded me that you always have to be paying attention out there! It sounds like you did the right thing by not confronting the guy. From what you said, you probably would never have convinced him that he was in the wrong. I probably wouldn't have been able to keep my mouth shut! Glad you didn't end up on the pavement or in a ditch! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It is SO frustrating dealing with inconsiderate individuals with their dogs. Not sure they understand how dangerous it is for fluffy and us on the bike, crashing is no fun, let alone having to then worry about a dog biting you *ugh* |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This wasn't on a bike ride...in fact, this happened to me long before I even considered doing triathlon...but I was out for a fairly long run one day along a somewhat busy stretch of road. Ran by a house where some guy was working in his yard across the street and his dog hanging out with him. The dog decided I was too close to their home turf, I guess, and came running after me barking and growling. Good sized dog too. The dude at the house didn't even make the effort to call the dog off! I was pissed. Turned around, gave the dog the evil eye and yelled, "Go home!" I slowed to a walk, but the dog continued to slink behind me...from the middle of the road. A car comes toward me heading the opposite direction, and I mouth to the driver, "Hit it." I'm not looking behind me, but next thing I know, thud! I turn around and the dog is high tailing it back to his yard, yelping. I don't think the car did much more than bump him; she wasn't driving very fast...person in road, dog in road...but I felt both guilty and justified. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dogs always scare the crap out of me when I am running. I will be running, all zoned in or whatever, than YAP YAP YAP YAP and I am like holy $#@! what the $#@$@$, USUALLY the dog is on a leash and ends up stopped just short of the side walk, man that just FREAKS me out. Sometimes they are not on a leash, like Saturday, and these two mini whatevers come running out yapping, running striaght toward me so I am like yelling at them, which only pisses them off more, of course when you run away they usually dont follow. Not a dog person. |

Science Nerd ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got chased by dogs for the first time this weekend. I didn't have to spray them. Telling them "No! Go Home!" worked pretty well. I felt bad, actually. One of the dogs was pretty young and he just wanted to play with us. He looked so sad when I told him to go home. |

I almost turned around to b!tch at the guy, but figured I needed to just continue with my ride... Anyways, any similar experiences? what did you do? yes, unfortunately, I got in an accident because of a loose dog earlier this season. Ended up in the hospital with a broken rib and clavicle. Had to have surgery on the clavicle and now have a titanium plate and 14 screws in my shoulder. Missed almost the whole season (I DID manage to do one race this past weekend, though). But you're right - people whole let their dogs run loose are asking for trouble. The dog could hurt someone (my rib broke in the back just a couple inches off my spine - it scares me to think how close I came to breaking my back...) or get killed by being hit by a car. I just can't believe how careless and irresponsible people can be. I love dogs, I have one myself - but you need to keep control of them. I could rant about this for a long time. I always want to say something to people when I see loose dogs, or show them my scar, but I doubt it would change their behavior. People will do what they want to do. I just slow waaay down when I see loose dogs now, and I'll get off my bike if I need to, and just walk around. I think most of them just want to chase, and if you stop and get off they'll leave you alone. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I'd rather mess up my pace for a few minutes than mess up my life for months again.... |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hit a dog last year on my mountain bike. This moron had two dogs on leashes. The dog saw me, started barkng and running, and this guy DROPS the leash. Huh? Wouldnt your knee-jerk reaction be to TIGHTEN your grip? So he drops the leash, the dog runs right in front of my wheel, I lock both brakes and slam into the dog's neck. The dog lived through it and I somehow managed to not go over the bars (on a roadie, I would have gone over...front shocks, wet road, and locking both brakes saved me and the dog). The dog just yelped and limped around for a minute or two. If he got away without injury..I would be surprised..I was moving and the dog was on the smaller size. That had to be a pretty good impact. The guy didnt even say "sorry". He just sat there trying to cuddle his dog. I am not sure who was smarter...him or the dog. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() About twenty years ago, there was a big dog that came at me from the front (I was doing about 30mph down a slight hill). I didn't really think just acted. Unclipped my cycling shoe, which back then had a steel plate in the sole, stiffened my leg and caught him solid in the face. Saw him stagger off like a drunken sailor. I felt bad at the time but it was him or me. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hate irresponsible dog owners and I also hate those stupid retractible leashes. I have 2 dogs so I love dogs and realize that they are DOGS and only act the way they do because they know no better. The owners though, you have to question them sometimes. I also have come to the realization that people just don't apologize any more. I can't tell you how many times I have gone out places and have almost been run over by adults or kids and noone tries to move or say excuse me. I am a fairly big guy (6'7" 215lbs) and people try to barrel over me. When I was a kid I would never try something like that. Now with the retractble leash thing. I actually got in a discussion/arguement with my wife yesterday about those. The thing is her brother will walk his dog with one and his dog likes to chase animals. Well over the weekend apparnetly the dog took off towards a bush and he just let him go and he attacked a skunk and now smells horrible. My comment was why would he let the dog run in the unknown basically. As soon as the dog runs, the stop the leash. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There's a dog that is always tied up along the route of our group ride. Little fluffy Llasa Apso type of yapper. He always comes running out barking. One day - not tied up. Ran right out into the middle of the road to bark, and nearly got hit about 9 times as we all brake, dodge, etc. to get around him. I missed him by inches, but at least by then he had mostly stopped running and was simply frozen in the road watching wheels go by within inches of his head. It was really scary though. Wreck hitting the dog? Wreck smacking into someone else? How much road rash do you get at 17mph? At least it wasn't on a downhill. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeez all these near misses with chasing dogs.... I may have to start packing one of these.... http://www.softairpro.com/airgun_gallery/product.php?productid=17297&cat=252&page=1 It even uses CO2...I carry that anyway....lol.... Plastic pellets at low velocity won't injure the dog either...but they'll run!!! |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() The retractable leashes can be great if used by a responsible owner but they can be deadly as well. A couple of weeks ago I was riding along on a multi-use path and saw a guy with his little yapper dog walking toward me on the wrong side of the path. I start to slow up just thinking he'd see me coming, I'd go around him to my left (his right) and we'd be good but no, he crosses over to his correct side of the path but the dog stays on the original side now with a retractable leash stretched across the path around wheel height. I ended up having to come to a complete stop and wait for his dog to decide to cross the path. Yeah, not so amused. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() an Airsoft gun is such a good idea, since out in BFE of Indiana no one leashes their dogs and I have to play a game of you can't run as fast as I can ride. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() From years of running (and being chased...scarily at times by angry dogs), I ALWAYS look for leashes on dogs when they come into view. After my nice little incident last year, I now make sure that I see the owner acknowledge that he sees me, and holds the dog (most do, I will say). If I dont see that, I typically yell "HOLD THAT DOG PLEASE". And they usually do...some times with a funny look on their face, but its better than eating the asphalt, right? |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() last year I had a cow make a huge run through the first layer of fencing and pulled up right before the culvert.... not the way to end a long Saturday morning ride... damn thing shattered the wooden slats and ran and stopped once it hit the barbed wire.... which I only noticed afterwards. Dogs? Just unclip and kick 'em if they nip if not move around - dumb owners - no help there - sorry ![]() |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a dog lover and most times I see a dog that looks like it is about to come up on me I slow down and anticipate that it will chase me. I feel that most dogs aren't going to attack and they just want to chase, once you take the chase out of it they move on or the owner calls it back. I'm by no means justifying them being loose and most times I am angry at the owners because the dogs could get hurt or killed or cause an accident but I just brush it off and go on with my ride. Dogs were bread to chase and herd and it's not their faults, it the owners. And I am a person who has been bitten by a dog while riding a bike. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Let me start out by saying that I'm a HUGE dog person. I've got a 112 lb. Great Dane and a 65 lb. Yellow Lab mix and they're my babies. Anyway, I had just started my run a couple days ago and all of a sudden I hear someone yell for their dog to come back. I look to the side and see this cute little 15 lb. white and black dog coming for me. I'd seen it out before w/ its owner walking - loose, of course - when I'd been out walking my dogs - on their leashes. I just stopped and took the chance that it would just sniff me out and not bite me. I guessed right. I get so irritated with people who let their dogs in the yard unleashed. Hey, that's great that their dog can do that, but there can never be any guarantee that he won't go beyond his yard. Plus, it's not safe for the people or for the dogs who have to encounter him, nor is it ultimately safe for him. I live in a farming community and it's partly a cultural thing, but it is one of my hugest pet peeves. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a huge fan of dogs (obviously... based on my username). We've got two retired greyhounds that I absolutely adore. That being said, I will do what I need to in order to protect myself or other riders from a charging dog. A couple years ago, I was doing a solo ride and about 10 miles from home. As I pedaled on a country road, a medium size dog charged me from a driveway. I yelled for it to stop and go home, but it just kept charging. I ended up unclipping my right leg and giving it a swift kick in the mouth. I heard the metal of my cleat strike its teeth, and it ran off towards home wimpering the entire way. I still feel bad about what I did. But if it happened again, I'd do exactly the same thing. People need to learn that if they're going to have a dog outside, they need to A) have the dog in an enclosed dog run, B) put up a fence that will keep the dog in the yard, or my least favorite option C) have the dog on some type of rope or lead that will keep the dog in the yard (note that I didn't say anything about an invisible fence!!). Rant over. -Joel |
