Anyone see that Phelps' goggles filled with water in the 4x200 relay? If this can happen to him what chance do we have? (yes I know we don't dive off blocks)

With the force he jumps off the blocks and pushes off the wall I surprised they don't rip off his head.

Well, personally I feel like we finally have something in common, since my goggles started leaking and filling with water during my mini-sprint this past weekend.

So far it's the ONLY time I've been able to look at the swimmers and say, "I know what that feels like!"

So, Michael, call me - we'll have lots to talk about!

kagoscuba - 2008-08-13 12:51 PM Good for him, and I am genuinely happy for him reaching and exceeding his goals.  However, I do have an issue with him being described as the greatest Olympian ever for getting all of the golds, which will probably top out at 14.  As a swimmer, he is probably the greatest in history; however the sport lends itself to allowing a disapportionate amount of medals.  When reduced to a very simplistic level, Phelps is swimming multiple races with a slight to moderate variation, with a medal as the prize.  Now, let's say Decathletes got a medal for every discipline, instead of one at the very end, or if the basketball team had the team competition, slam-dunk contest, dribble contest, one on one contest, street-ball, and the ever popular HORSE.  That's a silly argument at the end, but you get my point.  He has the most golds by virtue of participating in a sport that gives him the opportunity to achieve so many AND being one heck of a swimmer as well.

Oh, sorry, I thought this was a thread about leaky goggles...

Seriously, there are other forums and threads on this site for these types of opinions to be stated.

Good on ya mate!

I have never been a competitive swimmer, but I understand they wear their goggles uber tight as well....

I thought they leaked on the 200 Fly.  that's why he looked mad after getting his 10th Gold.  People were saying he was upset about not going under 1:44, but he was just mad he couldn't see the whole time.

To the medal question:  Other swimmers have had the same opportunity to get multiple medals too.  So it's 'fair'.

That happened to me all the time when I was a competitive swimmer.  Eventually, I started swimming without goggles for the short races (50m, 100m).  It was kind of interesting to see the faces of people when I got on the blocks without goggles.

I swear I saw him excessively messing with his goggles before one of his races and I remember thinking, "hurry up!  they are almost about to START!"

I wonder if that was the race in which they leaked.  Unfortunately I did not record the Olympics so I can't go back and check it out.  But it would make sense.  It looked like he was having a hard time getting them seated properly.\

Leaky goggles suck!

That's what I ALWAYS wondered about!  I can see fine underwater, and it doesn't bother me.  Only gets bothersome over time due to exposure to the chlorine.  I always thought that I would give them up for the 50 or 100.  In a couple of instances, I have gone without goggles for a workout in a crisis.  My eyes did protest after about 30 minutes (and for a while afterwards), but it wasn't that bad....

Glad I'm not the only one with the crazies....

You can tell on some when they get ready to enter the water and take their goggles from their forehead and you can see the deep marks left from the goggles.  I noticed it quite a bit with Katie Hoff.

I still do this. I begrudgingly wear goggles for OWS. I mean, is salt water or lake water going to sting your eyes? Can't you simply close them while immersed? I don't get that goggles are "required".

Doesn't this belong in the HTFU file?

I won't harp on it, since it was unpopular to hijack the thread.  I didn't mean to other swimmers, and it wasn't a question of fairness.  It was a question of accolade.

I stand corrected, it was the 200 Fly. But get this:

BEIJING (AP)...........Just look what he did Wednesday: In the span of an hour, he set a world record in the 200-meter butterfly -- even though a faulty pair of goggles filled with water during the race

The guy even has the press blaming it on "faulty goggles"!

It happened during the the 200 fly. As long as you look down and have your head tucked in streamline your goggles will stay tight during starts and turns. Does not work 100% of the time though, with Phelps I'm sure its more common because of the speed and momentum that he creates.

Do you mean in triathlons or swim meets? Goggles are not required during tris. At least not that I've ever heard.

It is a frustrating thing when your goggles fill with water on a start. I don't think it's a question of whether goggles are needed for races but more the fact that when you are used to seeing everything clearly and all of a sudden you can't. Not being able to focus on the walls and get your timining into the walls cost him a little time on each wall and not being able to see the guy who was almost even with him for 150 meters in lane 1 also cost him some time.

He said he was disappointed in the swim because he felt he could have gone faster. He is a phenomenal swimmer that busts his in every workout and is focused on the task at hand. That's one hell of a work ethic!

That always happens to me in swim meets. It is SO frustrating! I've had it happen during the 400 IM before. I actually had to stop and empty my googles at the wall for that one! I don't know how Phelps broke a world record like that. That guy is amazing!

All well  and good, unless you wear contacts.  If your contact floats away, you're blind in murky water.....

Does anyone know what type of goggles he wears? I'v never seen the metallic/shiny/reflective kind before. Is there a reason for that ... other than they look way cool?
