So, all you experienced IMMOO'ers...what are the good hotels. Price, location, etc.

Thanks.

We stayed at the Clarion Suites in '07 and will be staying there again in '09.  It is not downtown, but don't let this fool you, because the location is right next to the shuttle buses at the Alliant Energy Center, so you can take the shuttle in on race morning.  Suites had kitchenettes, which came in very handy.

There were a few other hotels in the area that would be worth looking into as well.

Got a room at the Best Western right on the capital square at 8:15 while standing inline...by 8:30 the hotel was booked.

Thanks for your replies. Is there no Official Race Hotel. It doesn't seem that anything is real close to race site. Is there a place that is more popular for any reason. Location is key.

I was not able to get a room downtown last September but by early August rooms opened up at Double Tree and Best Western Inn at the Park. We stayed at the Best Western which is very convenient to the race site and State Street and is a bit cheaper than Double Tree. I would recommend it.

Yeah, both of those are sold out right now. Maybe I'll just get a place a little farther out and keep my eyes open next summer when cancelations happen.

Downtown hotels:

Hilton -- right next door
Edgewater -- downtown but on the other side of the Capital -- short walk
Inn on the Park -- just up the street
Concourse -- short walk

Close by:

Sheraton -- on bike path to the transition area

Cheaper:

look by the I90 / US151 interchange -- there are a number of hotels out there. Short drive to downtown

Anyone else find the official hotel reservation system sucks?  I just tried reserving rooms, put all my info in, didn't get a confirmation page.  Haven't gotten an e-mail in the ten minutes since.  Going to keep watching the e-mail and if I don't get anything soon going to try to reserve again.

I said the same thing. I sent them an email and here is the response I got:

Hi Michael,

I can confirm you have 2 rooms reserved at the Residence Inn.  However, due to the high volume of reservations being made yesterday, it may take up to several weeks or so before the hotels have a chance to enter the reservations into their system and assign confirmation numbers.  I apologize for this inconvenience.  Please let me know if you have any further questions.  Thanks!

I've stayed at several of the closer hotels through the years...

I stayed at the Hilton (host hotel) a couple times.  Quite nice, and as close as you can get.  One thing I didn't like was it's a pain to get all your stuff in and out.  Not enough elevators for all us IM geeks with all our stuff.  In particular, I found that getting out of there on Monday morning is a royal pain.  But, it's close enough that on race morning, you can go down to transition, turn in your SN bags, get body marked, check on your bike, all that stuff, and then go back to your room to chill out for awhile until heading to the swim start.  Your own bathroom on race morning :-)

I stayed at the Best Western in 2002.  Also very close.  It was okay, but not as nice as I would have expected for the price.  I recall parking was a pain...although parking is kind of a pain anywhere in Madison.  I don't think I'd stay there again given the other very nice alternatives nearby.

I stayed at the Doubletree a couple times, and really liked it.  It's about a 15 min. walk to the capital...maybe 20 min. to the Terrace at a leisurely walking pace.  Very nice, but with the family in tow, something a smidge closer is better for me.

This year I stayed at the Concourse for the first time.  It's just one block off the capital square, directly opposite side of the square from the Monona Terrace, a leisurely ~10 minute walk to the Terrace.  I thought it was very nice, and I recommend it.  Close to the race site, and close to the many shops and restaurants on State Street.  Very convenient for the family before the race, and during the run portion of the race, too.  I booked two rooms there again for next year.

I'll see you at the Best Western then.  It's going to be great being so close!  2.5 blocks to the finish line!

8845 hours until swim start!!!

I went ahead a grabbed a room at the Howard Johnson. I know...it didn't sound great to me at first either, but I think HOJO's has stepped it up a bit with their newer hotels. I did a search for reviews and it seems good. All the real close hotels seem to be full. HOJO's is a little over four miles from race site and close by the Alliant Energy Center that DMW mentioned has the shuttle for race morning. The site says it is new and has a big indoor pool and game room...great for my boys (will be 9 and 10). Plus it was only $99.

I'm still planning to keep my eye open next Aug to see if anything real close opens but at least I have something.

Has anyone stayed there or close by that can share anything?

Thanks.

We stayed at the Clarion this year and it worked great. They had a nice breakfast and happy hour and the shuttle was just across the parking lot.
We're staying there again next year.

Anyone ever camp for Immoo? The wife and I are planning on volunteering and found a Dane County Campground (Lake Farm Park) that's 5 miles from the Terrace, and appears to have a rail trail of some sorts that we can cruise into Madison via mountain bikes.

Got a suite at the Clarion.  Want to see if a room opens up at the Concourse or Best Western as it gets closer to race day next year though.

I think I'm booked at the AmericInn again.  Stayed there last year, and like Mike said it's close by and quiet.  I'm just freaking out a bit not having confirmation.

I was thinking you and Sandi could have stayed at my place and saved some moolah.

Last year it took a few weeks to get my confirmation. I would suggest thought that you don't trust the reservation system through the Ironman website for a confirmation or a cancellation. I made reservations at two different places and then cancelled one five weeks prior to the race. The Ironman reservation system sent me a confirmation of the cancellation but never bothered to let the hotel know. The hotel (Candlewood Suites) authorized the charges to my account race weekend as a result.

Fortunately for me Candlewood Suites' customer service is phenomenal and the guy I spoke to spent about two hours on Friday night of race weekend when they were slammed working with me to get the money back to me ASAP. It was amazing. I can't say enough about how good they were. I also think I was probably lucky. They very well could have refused to do that and claimed I never let them know. Regardless of what sort of confirmations you get from the reservations system, I would call and confirm it all with the hotel directly.
