Subject: Where do you look if running in a pack?
Sometimes we get in a pack in this running program I'm doing. And I'm not sure where I should be looking. Can't really see the ground very well if we get in a group of 8 or whatever.

The back of the runner in front of me? Try to look 10 feet in front of the pack? Sometimes I get dizzy if I'm trying to look directly down to the ground.

Look around you.  Watch for openings.  Practice breaking out.

The easiest way to run in a pack is to be in front.  Cool

As this isn't always possible, I look at the feet of whoevers in front of me.  This lets me not step on them and know the upcoming terrain.

Depends on the pace booty scenery around where we're running.

Right ... I was beginning to think this was a trick question.

The easiest way to run in a pack is to be in front.

I disagree.  Easiest way is to run in the middle.  Front running is mentally and physically tiring.

There's a reason why people who are in the front of a pack tend to fade later.

You should stare at their lats.

Exactly....get to someone's side and run on the outside of the pack, preferably on the opposite side of any cross wind.  I like to be able to see what's ahead of me so I have time to react.  Your stride can slightly overlap their stride since you are at their side and not directly behind them.  I hate running directly behind someone, too easy to trip up if they slowdown, stumble, etc, plus it's harder to see terrain changes.

You should stare at their lats.

You might not see obstacles in the road.   Find the right pacer as indicated earlier, and then stare a little lower and you can make sure everything is in your view.   All for safety of course.

You guys crack me up ... but it's an all-women's program, so there's no eye candy for me.

Look for the telephone pole/mailbox/etc. that everyone else in front of you has quickly and silently run around.

Then look behind you at the pack of men trailing you, many of them from this board apparently :-)

My eyes gravitate to the lower back of the runner in front of me for some reason. It allows me to see everything. Just a natural position. Look around only if you need to, and are planning to break away or move positions.

If it's good pace booty, then all bets are off.
