1st)  Use it gently to start.  Press to hard into a muscle and you might jump through the roof.

2nd) Use it regularly.

What kind of injury do you have? If you're really sore you might not want to roll it very hard over the area. I tend to go full force to knead my muscles.

I picked up mine about a month ago.  The "sales expert" showed me to rub hard on my IT band.  Man I felt it right away.  After about a week I was feeling a lot better.  I use it before and after runs, about 30 seconds on each area.

On my IT band I sit on the edge of the tub deck.  On my left leg my left hand goes on top of the stick.  My right hand reaches between my legs and grabs the bottom of the stick.  So the leg side hand is on top and the opposite hand reachs down between and on bottom.

I use it on my calfs after a long ride.

I don't know for sure if it was the stick or tossing the Asics, but my IT problems seem behind me now.

20 times on a leg then switch legs.  Repeat 3-4 times all over the leg muscles.  I do it while watching TV.

Does wonders for shin splints and any loose muscles.

I took it in my Hood To Coast relay van.  By the end of the race, everyone was using it before and after the race.  I love it.

I have a stick, but actually prefer a foam roller...with a roller I can use my body weight to work out the knots and tightness but can never seem to generate that much pressure with a stick.

BTW a "stick" is a runners torture device consisting of, you guessed it, a stick with sort of giant wobbly beads threaed onto it. You roll this nasty device on tight or sore muscles.

Looks like torture. Impressive testimonials, but I must admit I got a good laugh at the model names.

I like to take a can of tennis balls, stuff two in a sock, and roll over that!  I save the other ball for smaller areas.

The Sticks are awesome. I use mine everyday and find them especially beneficial after a hard workout or race. Bofore the Stick, I would be too stiff and sore, but after using it, it would work enough of the lactic acid out so I could get a decent recovery workout the next day. Shameless plug- I have some Sticks for sale; check in the Classified section -Nick

Just don't try packing your stick in your carry-on when you fly; there's been reports of customers having them confiscated as weapons. Seriously.

I use it right after running and it keeps me from being as sore the next day. If you want to talk about REAL torture, get a foam roller. I heart the Stick. I use it basically everywhere on my thigh (top, sides, underneath) and on my calves. I also sometimes use it on my glutes - you can sit on one buttcheek and massage the other one. (Tennis ball works well too) Don't use it over bone, though - at least, that's what I was told - ie, don't use it over your shins.

It looks like torture, true enough.  But it is the best little piece of training gear for $40.00 I ever found.  I use it on my legs a few times a week, low back and shoulders as often as possible...my neck.   My family uses it too but I'm the only one training for anything.

i bought one about 4 months ago and use it constantly. . i think i may have kind of maxed out the massaging effects of it, it still feels good but i have to press pretty hard (inless my muscles are torn up, ie after lifting). . i agree that it is an essential tool!@

Me too, I use them both but foam roller absolutely does a better job of loosening tight muscles for the reasons aquagirl described.  Most the serious runners I run with have gone more toward the foam roller to ward off IT band issues etc.

I think I got mine for $28. It is a semi flexible rod about 18 inches long with rubber gribs at the ends and 1 inch plastic rollers along the middle rod. The rollers under pressure break up areas of your muscles that have knotted together and cause pain or at least undue stiffness. One rolls the rod across sore muscle group breaking up the muscle bundles allowing for them to "let go of each other "think of a flickering flouresen't tube with the flickers being muscles twitching tight and loose for no functional reason" then the muscles can relax, heal and be ready for functional use. It is especialy good on that muscle just outside of your shin (shin splints) as well as that area on the outside of the calf muscle up near the knee from biking etc.

The expression "hurts so good" is very applicable. In a movie with Tom Sellak where he was playing an older baseball player and went to Japan or whatever to play baseball to prove he wasn't washed up he got very sore and went in to get a massage, which he later refered to as the "massage of death" because the masues broke up those muscle clumbs and it was not comfortable.

My wife sometimes looks at me oddly when I am using the stick on a IT band or whatever as I go oh... owe.... ah... thats a little better ya there we go. Between the Marathon Stick and icing after long runs, no shin splints in 8 months after not being able to run at all for a bit. I was litterally gtg back to normal running inside 1 week. In my opinion a very well spent $28.

Oh, I also used it on my neck after my first HIM last week. Neck was a little sore after the bike and feeling pretty good now.

Previously ITBS and now major issue in R calf, but knots/issues everywhere.
