Subject: Do any of you NOT primarily identify yourself as a triathlete?

So if you were asked, "what's your primary sport?", would you say "Triathlon?"

Or would you say, "Marathoner." or "Swimmer." or "Golfer." or whatever other sport you think you REALLY do despite all that time in the pool, bike and run!

Just asking because I'm curious. I've found that amongst marathon runners, the answer is almost invariably "marathoner", even if they do other sports - the demands of the 26.2 mile run training are so great that it generally becomes a primary activity, at least for the duration of the training.

That'd be me. I just say I run.  I don't call myself a "marathoner".  I don't really like saying "runner" very often either, to be honest.  I say I've completed marathons, and I run.

I'm a triathlete.  I spend 13-15 hours a week doing it.  Not nearly as much time doing anything else except for work.  Everything else is a hobby or just for fun.

I don't call myself a triathlete since I only race duathlons, but it just doesn't have that hang time like saying "triathlete" has. Most people I talk to about it quite honestly have no idea what a duathlon is (and evidently, either does my computer's spell checker) and confuse it with biathlon. People I work with refer to it as, "that marathon-thingy you do" which I think is cute, but I usually just say I'm a runner and like to bike alot.

I totally go with saying I'm a triathlete. So many people are in awe of triathlon it's actually amusing.

I have to say before I got into triathlon I had no idea how much planning and preparation went into it. Not to mention that on long course events the competitors take in nutrition.....I thought they just gutted it out for an insane length of time and were essentially superhuman.....

Now I try to explain to people that it's really just about preparation (training, planning, execution etc.) that anyone can do them it just depends on how fast and/or long you want to go.

I'm hooked on the sport but the bike segment is by far the most enjoyable for me...

I don't.  "I'm a boot camper and do some triathlons on the side" is how I answer.   Never called myself a triathlete and feel very strange saying that.

I respond by saying I like to do endurance events. If pressed I might say that I do triathlons, or if the person asking is a "kindred spirit", I'll elaborate, but for the most part I just keep it to myself.

In general I don't categorize myself as a triathlete. I'm just a guy who likes to swim, bike and run. A lot.

I "do" marathons (13th coming up) for fun, and I used to do triathlons (none this year, only 1 last year), and will start them again next year. I also love to cook, knit, and read.

Thats what I say.

I'm a volleyball player that does triathlons.  I'm haven't reached the point where I feel comfortable calling myself a triathlete.  Maybe after I have a few more race seasons (and longer distances) under my belt.

So, if there are 100,000 users on this website, and 10 users reply to your post, then can we assume that the other 99,990 DO primarily identify themselves as triathletes? (that's the part I fit in).

Me.  I call usually myself a runner.  If probed about my running, I'll then tell them I run ultras.  If someone asks if I do anything else or have hobbies, I'll tell them I also do triathlons for fun.

I consider myself an athlete.

I do lots of different things but don't want to peg myself with a label.

I've never been any kind of athlete in my entire life until this year when I started training and did my first sprint.  I'm pretty proud to call myself a triathlete, even though I've only said it out loud once.  I suspect the people at work are glad the season is over so I shut up about it, but they were so supportive and that helped keep me on track.  So, yes, I consider myself a triathlete (but I'm not a runner).

A lot of times I'm forced to tell people that I'm a triathlete. Many people will ask why I shave my legs so then I just tell them, "I do triathlons" or "I am a triathlete."

I am, however, proud to say it.

Since I've done about 25-30 triathlons and perhaps 200 or so running races, I guess I identify more as being a runner. However, I would probably do many more triathlons if more were available to do locally. Many of my friends tend to think of me more as a skier/snowboarder maily because I was very active in the local ski club for many years and bordered on being a ski bum of sorts.

I go through phases

During the winter months I turn into Surf-Bum/Skimboard-Bum mode where I surf and skim almost as much as I train.  I actually had the nickname "Hot Surfer RA" (RA = Residence Advisor = he/she who watches over first/second years in Residence), so if I didn't get the chance to say, I was identified as a Surfer.

Now, that said, I've only had one winter of training so far, and I've been MUCH better with the training this year.

When I'm swimming, and people stop and ask me why I'm fast (seriously, not trying to be cocky) I say I WAS a swimmer, but I'm now a TRIATHLETE.

Since i've started running cross country with my University's team, I've still said triathlete, even to those I run on the tea with.

So I guess final answer:

TRIATHLETE

I say "I do triathlons" but I don't feel comfortable calling myself a triathlete.  I guess it's because I've only been doing this for a year..... even though I'm 3.5 weeks away from my first HIM, signed up for IM, the addiction has taken hold and there's no end in sight.

Other people have referred to me as a triathlete and I'm perfectly willing to go along with that.

Fencer, eventer, SAR member

Hiker/snowshoer

Runner, former soccer keeper, climber

Triathlete, softball player

Other random athletics

^^^ General order in which I identify my various pursuits, based loosely on my interest & time invested. So that would be a yes to the question, I do not primarily identify as a triathlete, though I am a triathlete and will identify myself as such when asked.

Heh, I say the same thing Although I'm no where near my first HIM, so I have even more reason to be a little uncomfortable calling myself "triathlete". All in due time...

If I were asked by a complete stranger, "so what do you do", triathlon would probably be only one of ten or so things if mentioned at all.

Now if someone asked that I cared enough to answer the follow up questions about I would respond I am a father that spends his unpaid/non education time away from his family bowhunting and training for triathlon. The caveat is that most people aren't going to get the full answer because there are too many follow up questions to that statement to spend on the random stranger.

Usually I answer that I like beer and the Georgia Bulldogs (Joja-Bull-Dawgs) and after a few grunts the conversation is over.
