Subject: How many triathlons are you fit 4?

I am looking at doing as many triathlons as possible during the season of 2009!!

I am turning 20yo in July 2009, and I am looking at training for a long season throughout the winter....so im ready for at least 10-12 tri's--> Majority sprint distance, 1-3 Oly's....... some i will do some for fun, not 150% effort, like usual (depending on how i feel)

How many triathlons are you gonna get done next year? and why?

After completing 4 triathlons in the season of 2008 (first season).... I cant wait for summer to roll around in Ontario and get tri'ing again!!! all you need is a bike, shoes, and goggles.

P.S, Subaru series rocks!

I'm 18!!! Always cool neating younger peoples on here. 3-4, honestly. 1/2 IM in March SuperFrog, then have a few marathons planned, running is my love. Hope to do the Old town century ride as well. Tri's are quite addicting.

As long as you have enough base, and are smart about recovery you could race every week or two.

Granted, you can almost forget about a solid training schedule as most of your time is spent in recovery and pre-race prep, but you will still be in great shape as you are always racing.  The onyl problem is worrying about burnout.

In all this year I will have participated in about 12 or 13 events.  A full IM, a HIM, 3 marathons (DNFed one), 2 full olys and an oly relay, a sprint and various running and bike stand alone races.  And that is on the "light" side for a lot of people on here.

I have a bad habit of doing too many events.  I'll try and cut it down to 1 or 2 half marathons this year.  Will do 2 Oly's, 1 HIM and maybe 1 sprint to play with.  Then for the finale I'll hit IMMOO again this year.  I really hate to give up long training weekends preparing for that one and I don't like going into other races tired.  May try to do a stand alone marathon in '09 4 weeks after IM.  I know my body was hurting still at the 4 week point this year but it's a great marathon and I have 3 other people who want to do it together.

I typically only do 4 tris, one a month, during the limited Michigan season. I'm busy with family or band obligations most of the other weekends. There's a local time trial I can ride to that I do a few times, and there are some 5ks to do with the family, a century, and other odds and ends.

Thats awesome! ..... yeah im gonna definately work hard during winter, so that my body can recover faster. I am going to need some nutritional advice while racing, because trial and error isnt the best way to go.    Thats awesome to hear.... good to hear its humanly possible?....lol

As for the entry fees, subaru has a yearly pass for all of thier races, and i will look for local business's to sponsor me for other races and some travel expenses..... i love camping randomly.

Actually I think trial and error is the best way to go.. It's a big benefit of racing a lot, you get to try different things. Racing a lot is fun, but you do need to break it up in seasons or will burn out.

I'll end up with 5 tris for the year and 3 duathlons for this year. Along with quite a few just running races(7-9ish). Still working out my next years schedule.

Go for it! You're young and healthy. You should recover fast. If you can afford it, do it.

FWIW, I've done 32 running races so far this year, plus a duathlon and 3 TTs. My races have ranged from 2 miles to a marathon. I have at least 7 more running races scheduled before the end of the year. If an old man like me can race that much, a young guy like you should have no problems.

I think a lot of it depends on how you actually race them.  If they are short enough and you don't taper for them, I do not see it as a bad thing to race a lot.  It is a good way to get speed work in.  I know of people who have used this approach in substitute for speed work and it has worked out rather well.  I kind of like building to a peak and tend toward the longer stuff, be it running, cycling or tris.  If you do the longer stuff, racing too frequently can get in the way of your overall plan.

Having a good base is the key and giving your body rest tp recover when it needs it. I also think it's important to remember that unless you have the potential to make a living at the sport make sure you are having fun and keeping within your limits. Pushing yourself to a time goal only to come up injured is not having fun and is also not a smart way to race.

I do a lot of races because it keeps me motivated to train. This year I did 1 5K, 3 10K's, 1 15K, 3 sprints, 3 olympics, 1 HIM, 2 IMs, 1 half marathon, 1 marathon and a couple swim meets and bike TT's in there.

Next year I hope to back off just a bit on the shorter races and focus on a couple HIM's and 2 IM races. (possibly 3 if things don't work out on the first one.)

Race to have fun and have fun racing!! If your training is going well you'll PR just as much as pushing limits.

Your attitude is why I wish I started this sport when I was younger and single. I did 1 Duathlon, 5 Tri's (all sprints) and 2 5K's this year. Easily would've added another 3 to 4 Tri's but that definitely would've broken the peace As long as you listen to your body there's no reason you won't be able to race a lot. A lot of people put as much into training on a weekend as you do during a race anyway.

I love racing and most years I do 8-10 tris and a few random running races tossed in. Now I usually have my 1-2 A races (an IM at the end of the year and a HIM ealy in the year). These are the only races I'll taper for, but the majority of my races are sprints with a few Olympics tossed in. I have raced 4 weekends in a row with no issues. If your body desn't have any problems recovering from a sprint, you can do one week all summer long. I rarely do any speedwork so most of the time that will come from racing.

Heck this year I cut back on my racing, and I ended up getting an injury

With this (2008) being my first year for tri's, I did four - three sprints and an oly.  I'm going to try and step it up a notch next year with 3 sprints, 2 oly's, and a HIM.  I think the HIM is a stretch for next year, but it's something I really want to try.  One of the oly's is redemption from this past year (with a dismal finish), while the other is a way to keep in touch (through training and ultimately racing in a middle ground destination) with a good friend.  The sprints are a combination of the first tri of the year, a favorite tri from last year, and another travel race to try and get family and friends into the sport.  Good luck in your training and whatever races you do next season.

I just started this year, so I'm planning 5 or 6 for next year.  So far I've picked out a few sprints, an oly and a HIM to finish up my season.  I'll add in my others once the Subaru schedule is released.

If I didn't have a family I'd do a lot more.  It's hard enough to fit in all my training time, but then to expect my husband and young kids to tag along all over the province is a bit much to ask.  I'll keep it light for next season.

Tri season in Ontario is too short.

yeah tri season in canada is wayyy to short, lol.  I'd love to start getting friends and family into triathlons.....Ontario has a couple very good triathlons series, and a rigoTON of annual tri's held by random communities and organizations..... ill take whatever i can find, bring some peolpe along, and have a blast.    Now i gotta work my off (job/training) for the whole winter.....starting the fun November 1st.!!

When I was 20, I was doing 2-3 mile runs every weekday and doing the occasional 10k "hump" over rough terrain loaded with 80 lbs of gear in boots and kevlar.  I say go for as many as you can do.  Recovery that young is an amazing thing.  If like most of the guys I knew, you can drink 1/2 a case a beer, drink some shots, sleep three hours, and knock out 7 minute miles running.  Don't try that pushing 40.

hahah i know what your saying.  have been drinking quite a bt of beer in october, and just taking it easy/chilling becuase i consider this offseason lmfao. But yeah, when i step up on the bike or treadmill at the gym i can still do a million and a half intervals and speedwork sessions. Once november rolls around its time to pull up my fitness and get things to where i want them.... i am really slackin it this october hhaha  its brutal, but nice and relaxing......... but i like to tri....so i am pumped as hell o get going again. This break will be well worth it.

I enjoy races and other events quite a bit too (just finished 4 weeks in a row...I'm tired) and often use one race as training for another, so I'm not always "racing".  This year, it's been 2 1/2IMs, 2 IMs, 5 centuries, 1 bike race, 3 marathons, 2 ultra marathons (and 2 or 3 more to go) for me.  I'm becoming an old fart and you're still young so you should be able to recover better.  It sure is a lot of fun and it sounds like you have a nice 2009 ahead of you.

Hopefully next year I will be doing 1 Mary, 1 Oly, 1 HIM and 1 IM. Not 100 % planned yet, mostly working on uping distances.

If I were 20 and lived in colder weather I'd probably pack as many races as possible over the summer!

My main triathlon season is December through May, in which I plan 2 key triathlons and a duathlon.  This year I threw in a swim meet, and next year probably a 5k or 10k race.  So 4 in-season races.

My off season, which is three months of reduced triathlon training and three months of running priority training, I do two or three triathlons (this year 3) and a running race (this year a half marathon).  So 4 off-season races.

So for me, 8 races during the year.  Any more and I'd feel that my racing is getting in the way of my training, especially a weekly long ride during my main triathlon season.

for me to race effectivly, and still get in a solid training base i tend to race a lot early (march through june, back off in july a bit to rebuild base, and race more in the later summer/fall again.

this season i raced:
3 HIM
3 Oly
10 sprints
1 sprint DU
2 Cycling TTs
1 5k

this season this was the limit i could race and still preform well.

you need to remember, over the winter, you need not be pounding away everyday to be doing good. your frequency is going to matter much more than how hard you go. getting to the start of your racing season healthy is going to do wonders for your season, and pounding away at run and bike intervals all winter long is a very good way to hurt yourself.
