Nevada became a state on Oct 31, 1864.  The money the silver mining was creating was necessary to fund the Civil War and it is argued that the Republicans wanted to make sure they had enough industrial states to keep Lincoln in the White House.

So, we have the day off to celebrate all things Nevadan!

So - name your favorite Nevadan things!

I don't have to go to the East Coast to see New York City.   Don't have to travel to Europe to see Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

Was amazed by the Bellagio Fountains the first 4 or 5 times watching them.

If it actually existed, I'd vote for Area 51.

In addition to "Olga" at the Spearmint Rhino, of course.

I'm doing the half, and it will be my first.  I'm excited (and scared)!!!

As for going to Vegas in general...... I think it's fun for 2 days, tops.  Then I get tired of drinking, gambling, and spending a bunch of money...... and if it's summer, the ridiculous heat (yes, 110 at midnight is ridiculous).

ASQUAGA’S NUGGET

JOHN’S OYSTER BAR

SPARKS, NEVADA

COMBINATION SEAFOOD PAN ROAST:

1 Tablespoon cocktail sauce

1 Tablespoon butter

1/8 teaspoon celery seed

1/8 teaspoon lemon juice

1 jigger white wine

1/8 teaspoon Tabasco sauce

1 cup clam juice

Salt and Pepper

¼ cup shucked oysters

¼ cup crab meat

¼ cup peeled shrimp

1 ½ cups half and half

In a sauce pan combine cocktail sauce, butter, celery seed, lemon juice, white wine, Tabasco sauce, clam juice, and salt and pepper to taste.  Bring to a boil.  Add the seafood.  Boil for 3 minutes (less if all seafood was previously cooked and frozen).  Add half and half.  Heat but do not boil.  Serve with a pat of butter on top.  Serves 1 or 2.

We used to sit around their bar watching them make this as kids.

Wouldn't expect too many Burning Man observers in here..very unique experience (although I had to leave after only 2 nights because we were severely ill-prepared..

Burning Man is something I wish I did in my 20's but have not desire to try it now.   I watch alot of neighbors pull out vehicles/trailers that they keep for just the purpose of going to Burning Man once a year.

The little plastic flags on the back of the lounge chairs at the casino hotel pools that you flip up like the red flag on a country mailbox to let the bikini-clad poolside cocktail waitress know that you need another frozen margarita.  Because only in Vegas do they realize that actually mustering the strength to raise one's arm to order a drink is just waaaaaay too much effort to have to expend on vacation.
