Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm with hundo. I love this weather. Now, I'm not going for a stroll outside in a T-Shirt or anything. And I'm sure as heck not one of those people running outside at 5am right now. But I've lived in a few states, and when I moved back to Minnesota, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into weather-wise. My wife, however, who I convinced to move here with me, is still waiting for me to make good on my "1 warm-weather vacation each winter" promise. I guess weeks like this are why we splurge for Lifetime Fitness. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My Life on the Farm... A short whiney essay by Pattie Last night got the car stuck in the yard. Missed the driveway and slid off the side into the yard/drift. Dug for 2 hours and got nowhere. Thank gawd the tractor started, so we pulled it out with the tractor. But the rope on the bumper is frozen. I expect that will be there until spring. At least I can put it in the trunk. Almost didn't get out this morning and had to shovel off the *road* to get to work. Tonight's drama was animal related. Skipper (30 yr old horse) tried to put his eye out. Lots of blood (frozen) and hair torn off. Waited for the vet. 3 shots of tranq and 5 stitches later, the vet is gone and we're taking turns babysitting the drunk horse. This will be a while. All in this wonderful temps we're having. At least blood freezes and we don't have to worry about him bleeding out or anything. Good times. Better go. Jeremy is probably frozen and it's my turn now. Grrr. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yep. After reading the story of life on the farm, in the spirit of Kramer on "The Bet" episode of Seinfeld, I just want to say "I'm out." My 10 minutes of walking a crying, cold 6-year old to the bus this morning seems like luxury after reading that. Edited by Hazelmn 2009-01-14 8:54 AM |

You ever read any of the old James Herriot books? Add a pint of bitter at the end of the story and an old Yorkshire stockman with a heavy accent that you can't understand and you're about there. |

That brings back memories of my childhood. A blown fuse would mean frozen cattle/hog water and hauling milk jugs of hot water from the house to thaw them out. The smell created when that hot water was in the jugs is still something I'll never forget. I hope you kept warm Pattie. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pattie wins! I'm tired of the weather, and I will whine happily. I can't imagine why anyone would "like" this. I put up with it, for the other good 9 months. But this is ridiculous. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I took the day off from school. Partly because of Skipper and partly because our driveway is nearly impassable and we didn't get to blow snow last night. Skipper's eye looks pretty bad today; lots of swelling. At least the tractor started and Jeremy is out there clearing the driveway. This cold snap does suck big time. Our theory is that horses injure themselves in the worst possible weather. Last time we had a bloody face incident it was -22*. Hopefully this was the coldest and we're on the upswing. Not sure how much more farm drama I can take this week. Grr. And Brr. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am about to join Matchman in Arizona. Flight goes out tomorrow after school. It will be a 90+ temperature difference from our low tomorrow to Phoenix's high. Although I am one of those people who run when it's -15 below, I just couldn't do it this morning. Things are looking up though; Monday will be in the 20's. FYI...I was checking out a Georgia teacher's website and she had to remind parents to send their kids with proper outside attire because they go outside unless it really cold; 42 degrees or below. My students would ask to go out without a jacket at those temperatures. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hah! I remember when it got warm (i.e. 40) in the spring at school and we'd not only want to leave our jackets behind, but we'd be wearing shorts! Wimps. |
