Extreme Veteran 737 | Subject: Anybody been hit by a car? I got bumped tonight crossing the street. It was entirely my fault for expecting the woman to stop at the stop sign or at least look both ways while making her rolling stop. As she had children in the car, I refrained from profanity or anything like that. Anybody else have a good hit by car story? |

Expert 749 Oakland, Fl | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? I have been hit 3 times by cars on my bicycle. I was a lot younger and it seemed every 4 years that invisible target appeared on my back. I dont rememeber the 1st one. The second, I was riding through the local town park in a swim suit and flip flops. I was turning into the road that lead to the path to my house. The car turned wide right and I slammed into it. My foot through the blinker and the bike under the car. I was not injured. I bounced. 4 years later, I was ridign to a friends house and I rememeber distinctly that my mom told me not to go there and call her for a ride home. I made this trip on many occasions without calling. I think she jinxed me. As I was crossign a busy highway, the left turn arrow went green, the woman didnt look and made the turn slamming into me, once again, bouncing off the hood of the car. I picked up my bike, walked a mile to my friends house and called MOM for a ride....ugh. I did suffer damage to the cartiledge in my knees and went for months of PT. No lawsuits. I left the scene of the accident and the police report was not kept. It has now been 16 years since the last wreck and I am just getting back on the bike to prepare for my 1st tri. wish me luck that the invisible-to-me traget doesnt re-appear. PS I was not at fault for ANY of the wrecks. |

Expert 1194 | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? Not yet! But some realy close calls. Last week I was on a short ride and someone comes flying past me and decided to slow way down and turn right in front of me. I had to hit the brakes hard and slid about 10ft. The other time was a month or so ago and some redneck in a monster truck was passing in a no pass zone and damn near hit me head on, I ran off in the ditch and almost crapped myself. Tri'n is risky business!! |

Exact same thing happened to me - I slammed on my brakes but ended up skidding right into the car - ouch - serious road rash and permannetly damaged shoulder - the 19 year old girl with a revoked license played all repentant at first so I didn't call the cops - When I contacted her later she hung up on me then threatened to sue me. Note to self and everyone else out there - IF YOU ARE INJURED DON'T HTFU - CALL THE POLICE |

Extreme Veteran 451 Lake Effect Snow Country | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? Last summer, rear ended by a driver. I was aero, riding fast on a very wide road, a place where lots of people bike. She ran right into me, my back wheel went under her car, the rear frame bent in on itself. She wasn't going much faster than me, so I hit her hood/grill with my butt and fell to the side. I fully expected a driver who was paniced, upset, sorry, or anything that indicated she had nearly killed me. WHat I got was a drug addled older woman who asked me what happened (as my bike was under her car and I was on the ground in front of it). The police and ambulance came, the officer asked her to move her car off of my bike, she tripped off of the curb and then she backed her car into the police cruiser. Evidently she passed the sobriety tests but was ticketed for unsafe driving and sent on her way. Very scary, but I came away without broken bones. I had road rash on my right arm and shoulder, chain marks on my right leg and a pinched nerve in my back. I'm still in the mix with her insurance company. |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? I was hit in September 2006 one month before I ran the Chicago Marathon. I was biking on a park path in New York City that runs along the Hudson River. There are a few intersections coming off the West Side Highway and this woman blew through the stop and nailed me. I had slowed like always at the intersection but didn't stop because there was a stop sign for traffic AND a parks department employee directing traffic. Only as I rolled through I realized the parks employee had her back to traffic and was chatting with some guy and in that span of literally 2 seconds, I realized the car was also not stopping and I was getting hit. I wasn't seriously injured but it made my marathon hell and cost me a great deal of red tape and suffering with the insurance companies. The worst part is that the woman never got out of her car to see if I was ok. I sat bleeding in the road for 40 minutes waiting for an ambulance while she sat in her car with the windows up. I was furious. I don't know what is wrong with some people. |

Master 1404 Saratoga Springs, Utah | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? Hit twice. Once on a run and once on the bike. Both times the car turned right into me. The guy that hit me while running felt pretty bad but I ended up with just a good thigh bruise. The one that hit me on the bike tried to blame it on me until 3 other cars that had witnessed it pulled over and let him know otherwise. Then he was saying how sorry he was, etc. |

Frugal Gear Geek 2199 having fun with the kids | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? I to had a close call with a car. I was racing and had a good enough line of site to notice that the Police detail officer was talking to someone on the course with his back to me. He directed a car right out in front of me! I hit the breaks, slid, somewhat sideways, and missed the car by less than a foot. Never fell, and continued the race. Needless to say by the time I came around for the second lap, the officer was much more attentive, and appoligetic.

Expert 968 Wellington, North Island | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? I wasn't hit by a car, but I was doored by one. Luckily it was really early in the morning so when I flew into the street and bounced there weren't any cars coming. I ended up with a severely sprained ankle, some major bruising and a strained muscle in my shoulder. I was also hit once running. The lady was making a right turn on red and didn't really stop. I kind of bounced off the side of her car and got knocked back onto the sidewalk. She was very apologetic and so shaken up she had to pull over and sit for a minute before she could drive again. And she asked me if I needed to be driven to a doctor or anything. |

Pro 3673 MAC-opolis | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? Training for the 2007 FLHIM, I was whipping over Key Biscayne and approached a traffic signal. I had the green light and dropped a gear and hammered in aero. About 20 feet in front of me a mini-van decided to turn into a shopping center. I had no option but to drop the bike and sliiiiiiiiiide. The guy turned out to be a senior Cuban dude who knew no English except "sorry". My right calf was tore up with road rash. I dumped some water on it, sent Jose' on his way and finished my 40 miles. That night, I payed for it...freakin' OW! Scar still with me today. |

Expert 987 Durham, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? I was almost side-swiped by a white SUV while competing in my 2nd triathlon, it was right at the every end of the bike leg and I was just about to pull into the Transition area from off the road. A cop had traffic stopped and everything, I signalled with my left arm that I was turning left, and then just as I got to about the rear driver's side bumper of this SUV, they decided they didn't want to wait anymore and darted out to the left to get into the center turn lane and pass by the stopped cars in front of her. I had to swerve as hard as I could to the left and hit the brakes at the same time, which caused my bike to lock up and pitch fork me over the handlebars ... I landed on the side of my face and then my shoulder ... my feet were over my head and I slid a little, then settled down onto the pavement and was unconscious for about 15 seconds. I got back up and was cursing and yelling that my damn shoulder hurts and that my damn handlebars were bent ... I stopped in the middle of the road to straighten them out ... then walk on across and down into the parking lot that led into the Transition area. I kept losing my balance and falling over to my left side ... the side of my head I landed on ... I finally got to my Transition area ... checked that my face was not hamburger and that no bones were sticking out from my shoulder ... my knees were bleeding ... I squirted some water on them ... bounced up and down a few times to make sure nothing else was broke ... and then headed on off for the run segment. This was my slowest T2 time ever, about 5 1/2 minutes. Here is a pic of the white SUV in front of me and me signalling that I was turning left. Then some pics showing my injuries. The SUV darted to the left, must have seen me crash, stopped, and then darted off again before any police could catch up with her. She was never seen or heard from again. BTW, my 5k run time was 6 minutes faster than my last sprint. Hmmm...I teach this in my motorcycle class and it applies to the bicycles as well.... Never....NEVER hit the brakes in a swerve. It results in a cartwheeled bike....motorized or not. My dad just learned that lesson on his bicycle trying to avoid a construction barrel. Keep the upper body independant of the swerve and don't hit the brakes until the bike is straightened back out. Maybe not a lesson for you, since it is learned already, but for a newbie.... |

Champion 4942 Richmond, VA | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? closest I've come is walking across the street in Concord, NH in front of the Capital Building. They have a bunch of crosswalks and signs that say "It is State Law to stop for Pedestrians." Apparently this old lady from Maine either couldn't read or didn't bother reading the sign. Thankfully I saw her coming at I literally jumped at the last second and her bumper just missed me. She never even slowed down. The good thing is that it happened right in front of "ForeFathers" so I was able to calm myself with a Bucket of Beers. |

Master 1457 MidWest | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? Not me but our high school cross country son this past season. They were out for one of their long runs. He was running on the sidewalk about a mile from school and was crossing an exit for a parking lot. One car coming up as he entered the exit and he thought it would stop. It did stop--after it clipped him in the back of the knee and for the driver to yell at him to get out of her way! That ended his season and got him a trip to the sports doctor. |

Expert 932 Madison | Subject: RE: Anybody been hit by a car? Totally not tri related, but I was hit by a car in high school - along with four of my friends. We were in a mall parking lot and the 16 year old driver hit the gas instead of the brakes. She had her boyfriend and two other people in the car. She was so freaked out that she got out of the car and ran off. I was the worst injured and ended up with a torn MCL, LCL, broken wrist and bad headache. I am now learning that the ACL must have been torn too and not repaired since a recent knee injury and subsequent MRI revealed that I haven't had one in a while. |
